YYYeeeaaarrr 555 CCCaaammmppp We smiled and waved goodbye to our parents. We couldn't wait to get to Year 5 camp!! Like a bird in a cage, we wanted to be free to explore but our instructors lined us up and took us to fun activities. We got to try braving the cold waves in Water Survival, clambering up the Giant’s Ladder and trying to hit a target in Archery. After a bit of practice, some people got the hang of archery. They were able to hit the target easily. ‘Grab, tug and pull!’ the instructor said. After our first day of activities, we went to our CABIN ROOMS! Finally! The first things we saw when we walked in were a mountain tall bunk beds with the softest mattresses ever! The parents made a yummy dinner, and we watched a movie. It felt like it had been a long day. The next day we finished our next activities. We abseiled down a tall wall, tried to build usable rafts out of barrels and rope, and even tried to work together to solve some tricky team games. We had the best time ever! Wow, what a busy year for art! We began the year with a group of Year 5 and 6 children learning to carve with Master carver Natanahira. They produced an amazing panel that was part of Bayswater Schools Matariki festival and will be also on show at the Sculpture on the Shore at Narrow Neck Our main event was art week. Every child in school had the opportunity to go to 3 workshops and produce amazing pieces of art. The theme was Art from Stories. Our hall was a splash of colour and showcased our amazing skills as artists. Finally, the Year 3 and 4s have worked in collaboration with the artist Yang le to make pom poms, these will cover a gun emplacement at Narrow Neck during Sculpture on the Shore. In addition, Room 18 have a sculpture installment in the children’s exhibition named “Find Your Way” our inspiration being the First Nations people of Canada’s wonderful Inukshuk. Inushuk guide the way in the wilderness. We are looking forward to seeing our work in a professional exhibition.
Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori 2023 Once more, Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori was a fabulous week full of Tuakana-Teina learning and everyone in our Kura and Whānau community stepping up to be brave in using one of our official languages of Aotearoa. It is fantastic to see the progress everyone is making and the joy singing, writing, speaking, listening, reading and performing Te Reo Māori brings. Our job now is to keep using Māori every day. 77

Change was a keyword in Garden to Table this year. We had a staff change - we were sad to say goodbye to our wonderful garden specialist Brett, but have been so lucky to welcome Colleen, one of our amazing volunteers, into the role. We changed our garden - massive thanks to the Reid family and their business - Ross Reid Contractors Ltd - who donated their time and resources to put fabulous drainage systems in place so our beds don’t end up waterlogged. They also provided us with beautiful new soil for the new garden beds and a layer of mulch to finish the pathways. We changed our sessions - adding not only new plant varieties into the garden and new recipes to our menu, but also adding to the learning by including a ‘word of the week’ for both the garden and the kitchen. What stayed the same - massive thanks as always have to go to Hammer Hardware Devonport and The Warehouse Milford for their ongoing support of our programme, and the volunteers that came along each week. We couldn’t do it without you! Before After
Thank you to all the many people involved with our Netball this year. The school had 85 excited kids, playing at either the Devonport Fun Ferns Year 2 and 3s and Netball North Harbour for our Year 4-6. The school had 8 teams playing at Netball North Harbour, our 4/1, 4/2, 6/1 & 6/2 teams all won their respective grades with 5/1 coming runner-up in theirs. As well as winning their grade Belmont 4/1 also won the best defensive team for the whole North Harbour primary school competition. An amazing achievement. Another highlight for our Year 6 teams was the annual field day tournament; 6/1 won Grade 1 and 6/2 came runner -up in their grade. A very successful year for the school. Congratulations to all our teams. We had many new players, trying Netball for the first time. Seeing the improvement of all the players was awesome. You have all developed new skills, played with great spirit and determination and have made some new friendships along the way. You have all represented yourselves and the school in a fantastic positive way. Well Done. I look forward to seeing you all back again next year. A special thank you to all our amazing coaches and managers who volunteer their time to support, share and encourage our netballers and a big thank you to all our umpires. We couldn’t do it without you all. 5/2 4/1 4/2 4/3 5/1 5/3 Good luck to all our Year 6s who are leaving us and moving on to Intermediate. I hope you continue to play and enjoy your netball and look back on your Primary school netball with happy memories. Good luck, we wish you all the very best. 6/1 6/2 86

We have had a fantastic season at Belmont Primary Hockey in 2023. There were two teams entered into the competition at the North Harbour Hockey Stadium in Albany. We had a Year 3/4 team and a Year 6 team both playing in the open grade with mixed teams. Some of the players were new to hockey and others had played before. It was wonderful to see the children's skills improve and their understanding of the game increase as well. Playing through the winter, we experienced lots of rain and cold weather, but the kids showed great enthusiasm and dedication to their teams. For the coaches, the best part of hockey is seeing the team spirit and the enjoyment the children get from playing the game. And it is great to see so many parents coming each week to positively support their kids and help build a great culture for BPS Hockey. Many thanks to Aaron Dobby who has been coaching the teams for the last few years and imparted a wealth of knowledge and also to support coaches Mark Davies, Briar Williams and Tereza Bebich who ably assisted. Thanks also to Robyn Holt who has been a huge supporter of Belmont Hockey over the years. We are looking forward to our 2024 season.
