Page no. 99 E PAUCIS EXCELSA Rugby The 1R team had an incredible season this year. It was Glendowie College’s first time in this weight grade in three seasons, so we were severely underestimated by the competition and placed in the second division. However, with a dominant forward pack and a precise backline, we ran rampant through the competition, quickly rising to the top of the ranks. Posting scores of 26-10 against Sacred Heart and 37-11 against Auckland Grammar, we were amping to move up to the top division. We managed to secure a game against Kings College top 1st XV Restricted team, on a day that we both had a bye. After a gruelling game in less than ideal conditions, we came away with a 7-0 win, once again proving our ability to beat first division teams. Unfortunately, we were stuck in our original division for the rest of the season. This did not phase the team however, and we pushed each other to perform better than ever, gaining results of 27-0 against Sacred Heart and 28-0 against Auckland Grammar. These excellent results netted the team a spot in our finals, once again against Auckland Grammar. The finals were played on home turf, coinciding with the school open day. This brought a big crowd and a tonne of pressure for all of us, especially as Grammar was still a strong team, very capable of causing an upset and claiming the trophy. We 1R Rugby 6th Grade Rugby This year our 6B Boys Rugby team initially lacked confidence and trust in each other. However, over multiple training sessions the boys developed into a structured and organised team. This was made all the more clear when our three opening games of the season gained us three consecutive wins. We felt comfortable in the 6B grade and were willing to step outside our comfort zone and play in the 6A grade. Safe to say: the boys left it all on the field. Although we had many setbacks due to major injuries, that put people out for the majority of the season, we would always give our all and do whatever it took to win. Unfortunately 6A was a very competitive season with players working at an incredible skill level. We were seen as the “underdogs” of the competition at first. But after we worked hard on building the chemistry and skills within the team we were able to close the score gap significantly. A special thanks go to our coaches Pierre Van Zyl, PJ Agnew & Dave Deveraux for supporting the crew and helping us through those tough moments on the field. Also thanks to the boys who showed up to training and games no matter if they were injured or unable to play. Tom Nevell kept the boys in shape and well tempered on the field with his loud yet very true halftime speeches, Hugh Deveruex kept the boys amped and ready for whatever was coming our way. Overall a season to be very proud of. A thanks to the sports department, Phill and others for organising this competition for us and always keeping us at our best. Oli Wigglesworth wanted to make a statement to the rest of the competition and Auckland Rugby- to prove that Glendowie College is now a toplevel rugby school and deserves to be treated as such. So we did. A dominant performance ensued, as the entire team came together to showcase the skills we had honed. We ended the game with our best win of the season, securing a 46-5 win and victory over our division. We played some brilliant rugby this season, finishing with eight wins and zero losses, achieving the records for highest points scored (187) and the least points conceded (55). We also created an awesome team culture that will remain for future seasons. Along with the Selwyn and Glendowie 1st XV Composite team, and the 6th Grade, we succeeded in showing that Glendowie can compete as a top rugby school. Good luck to all the players leaving us and the Year 9s and 10s who will carry on the legacy this team has created over the last few seasons. A massive thank you to the Ted Manson foundation for providing our school with a new scrum machine, enabling us to perform at our best and remain safe while doing so. Hugh Nevell (1R Captain)
100 GLENDOWIE COLLEGE Sailing at Glendowie College has been very successful in 2022. Early in the year, James Boyd, George Lee, Aidan Beauchamp and Ben Brewer took part in the Harken National Secondary School Keelboat Champs and finished 4th, narrowly missing out on a podium placing. We also qualified for Gold Fleet at the Secondary School Team Sailing National Championship with a 5th at the Auckland Cup. Our team consisted of Aidan Beauchamp, Benjamin Brewer, Anja White, George Lee, Beau Utting, Logan Ross and Leo Brown. We got off to a shaky start in the regatta in Algies Bay, with the addition of Elbe White to the team- filling in for teammates with prior commitments. However, we managed to claw our way back and in the process qualified for the Team Sailing Interdominion Championships, a competition of the best NZ sailors against the best of Australia. We finished with a very strong placing of third in NZ, receiving the bronze medal. Our win contributed to NZ retaining the Interdominion trophy over Australia. We also had a few outstanding individual sailors who did extremely well in the individual regatta: Beau Utting placed 6th in the Lasers, Logan Ross placed 8th and Leo Brown placed 13th in the Starling. Overall we have had a great experience representing GDC in sailing this year and are very proud of our achievements. Aidan Beauchamp The GDC Swim Team had an awesome season this year, with the opportunity to compete in many local and national events. The highlight was the New Zealand Secondary School Champs held in Hamilton, with a team of eight competing. Our team was Lou Lou Penman, Sophie Barry, Xanthe Miller, Maisie Penman, Daniel Hoeglinger, Aiden Mussell, Max Ly and Fraser Walker. Daniel Hoeglinger won the silver medal in the 200m Breaststroke and we had many top ten finishes from the team. At North Island Secondary School Champs in Wellington, we had just a small team of two competitors. Sophie Barry placed second in the 100m Butterfly and third in the 100m Freestyle events. At the Individual Swimming Champs in Auckland, Sophie Barry placed first in the 200m Butterfly, second in the 100m Butterfly and third in the 200m Individual Medley. Maisie Penman placed second in the 100m Breaststroke and third in the 200m Breaststroke. Our team had a successful 2022 and we are excited for the year ahead. Sophie Barry Sailing Swimming
Page no. 101 E PAUCIS EXCELSA Every Friday night Glendowie battles it out at the Auckland Table Tennis competition. We have four teams from different year levels in separate grades A, B, C and D. All teams were successful. There was some great competition with many schools across Auckland competing and lots of fun was had. Table tennis competitions are played in a best of seven games, with six of those games being singles. Each player has two games to play with the last game being a doubles match. In Term 1, Mr So took four of our leaders to Gillies Ave Table Tennis Stadium to get extra coaching from Dinyar Irani, who represented New Zealand as one of its youngest players. Over Terms 2 and 3 we competed in the pre-season, winter and early spring competitions. In the Spring Competition our C grade team scored 4th place and in the Winter Competition our B grade team scored 3rd. A big thanks from all the team to Mr So and Dr Shi for making it possible for us to play by organising and driving us to and from the school as well as taking our Wednesday morning and Thursday break time training. Beau Utting Table Tennis Waterpolo Glendowie College Water Polo has yet again proven to be a successful part of the sporting culture. The Glendowie Premier Team took out first in their league, with a close game going to penalty shootouts against Kings. They fought hard at Nationals in Rotorua, taking home a ninth place plate. Rudi Visser played the part as our head coach, with Jackson Wiggans assisting alongside. The B Team played hard with many close matches in their division. A special mention to our manager Heyley Venn who made everything possible this season. Also a huge thanks to Otis and Cade for contributing to Glendowie College Water Polo for 5 years!
102 GLENDOWIE COLLEGE Underwater Hockey For Underwater Hockey at Glendowie College, 2022 has been another successful year. Preseason practices and games commenced in mid-March with the season running during terms 2 and 3, culminating with the Secondary Schools national tournament in September. We had two Senior Girls teams with 46 players in the squad, and one team in each of Senior Open, Junior Open and Junior Girls. It was pleasing to have a group of committed players consistently training both their skills and fitness throughout the season which provided some excellent results. One team from each division competed in the northern region tournaments in June/July held at Westwave pool in Henderson, Auckland for the Juniors and at Baywave Aquatic Centre in Mt Maunganui for the Seniors. Our Senior Open placed 1st in their division, with Junior Open gaining 2nd, Junior Girls placed 3rd, and Senior Girls in 4th. As a result all four teams qualified to compete in the National Secondary Schools Championships tournament in Wellington in September. During the regional tournaments, promising players were selected to trial for the Auckland (Northern Zone) Under 18 teams which played in a tournament over Labour weekend. Glendowie College had a large number of players invited to trial and eight Senior Open and four Senior Girls were successful and took part in that national representative tournament in Wellington. Having qualified for nationals we continued to build momentum during the remaining Auckland season. We were recognised at the Auckland prizegiving with Senior Opening winning gold, Junior Open winning silver, and both Senior Girls and Junior Girls winning bronze medals. Each school had their most valuable players recognised plus a top boy (Ryan Lock 13NAI) and top girl (Phoebe Wild 13THR). Our Senior Open captain, Ryan Lock was also awarded the Auckland Underwater Hockey Most Outstanding Senior Player trophy. The 36th National Secondary Schools Championships went ahead this year in Wellington for the first time since 2019. Junior Open secured silver, and for the first time since 2014 the Senior Open brought home gold medals. Glendowie College retained the Top Underwater Hockey School in New Zealand title from 2019 and Ryan Lock was awarded the Underwater Hockey New Zealand Top Male Player trophy. The most valuable players were also recognised at each tournament and at Nationals a national tournament team was selected recognising the top ten players in each grade across New Zealand. This year Glendowie College had Daniel Hoeglinger (11SHN), Otis McKenzie (13GEE), and Ryan Lock (13NAI) selected from the Senior Open team; James Hay (11JAN) and Josh Dale (10MCE) from the Junior Open team, and Amy Cilliers (9MET) from the Junior Girls team named in the tournament teams. Underwater Hockey relies on the passion of past and current players to keep the sport alive. We would like to say a big thank you to our extremely talented volunteer coaching team who have shared with us their high level skills and experience and helped us achieve the amazing results we have this year. Thank you to Rob Tinkler, Rachel Tinkler, Jackson Godfrey, Macayla Lock, Alyshia Samuel and France-May Martel. Also thanks to our team managers Gill Ramsbottom, Claire Diprose, Sheryl Wu, Wendy Smith, Roz Christensen, our teacher in charge Anna Vincent and coordinator Raelene Lock. We look forward to building on this momentum next year. Ryan Lock (Senior Open Captain) & Phoebe Wild (Senior Girls Captain)
Page no. 103 E PAUCIS EXCELSA Volleyball Senior Boys A Volleyball Senior Girls Volleyball This year, the volleyball programme at GDC really took off. I believe the dedication, competitiveness and enjoyment felt by the volleyball players in 2022 surpassed that of all other previous years. The large majority of us started playing volleyball either last year or this year which was amazing considering our results. The season we had last year sparked a genuine interest in the sport for those involved. It laid the foundation for where the volleyball programme is at, as of this year, and will hopefully continue to do so in future years. Our season saw many highlights from a variety of players. Our absolute cannon on the outside, Ron Chong, created dents in the floor from his monster spikes. Working with Ron, one of our youngest, tallest and most ‘confident’ players, the 6’7 prodigy John Petrucci, meant that the opposing receivers constantly had a tough time. On top of that, our favourite left-handed, red-haired opposite spiker, Lachlan Potter, gave GDC an unstoppable offence. Once the season was over, these players also went on to play for Auckland and other out-of-school teams. Each and every player had several amazing moments: the blocks from middle blockers Lewis Azzopardi and David Yuan, the ridiculous receives from primary libero Jordan Visagie and many quick spikes from Will Rawbone. It would be criminal not to mention the skills of setter Jack “Jabe” Butland that enabled the majority of our highlight spikes. Despite many cancellations and difficulties with Covid, we still made the most out of our season, placing first in our pool after some commanding wins (and some excellent singing during the van ride back). GDC won against Michael Park (25- 9, 25-17), against Edgewater (25-20, 25-21) and against Saint Kent’s (25-17, 25-11). As a result, this year was the first in a long time that GDC had a boys volleyball team in the Auckland Champs. Although the teams we played had several years’ more experience and much more practice, we still played extremely well, winning in straight sets for our games on the first day. I always love playing volleyball as it’s really fun environment and a good way to start of the year. This season the girls played really well and since we had already played together we just flowed as a team from the beginning. Our goals for this year were to play consistently and to always bring an attack back to our opponents. Throughout the season I think we got the hang of it. We were fortunate enough to have Kylie Jorgensen who had completed her Personal Trainer course so fitness training was extra special. Also, our coach Lydia Brown continues to share her amazing knowledge of volleyball, lifting our skills to new heights. This year we were lucky enough to make it to Auckland Champs and we placed seventh in Division Two- a result we were really proud to achieve. And at the end of this year our volleyball team has decided to continue to play in a social team so we are ready to hit the season hard in Term 1 next year. Taylor Nassau This was due to the new team additions Brandon Yiu, Emilio Testas, Cooper Agnew and Kleit Morina, as well as our amazing coaches Alex Da Silva and Mr Jun. I believe that volleyball has not only allowed us to have a lot of fun but has also enabled us to develop our confidence and leadership. Someone always had something to say to encourage and build up the team, although this may have worked against us sometimes. I think that we all discovered the huge emphasis on teamwork is what made us successful in volleyball, and we know that the younger players will continue to keep the energy high next year. David Yuan
