job roles in the creative industry

job roles in the creative industry

Unit 24 – Job roles in the creative industryIn the creative industry, there are a range of jobs to form and produce a film or even a tv show. These are like: producers, screenwriters, actors, directors, Catering crew and makeup artists. They all play an important role to bring things together and work as a team. In this assignment, we will be exploring the different type of job roles in the creative industry, and the responsibilities and skills that you need to get into this profession. The first job we are looking into are development producers. Their role and responsibility for this job is to search, and find scripts, and stories that could be potentially commissioned into a tv programme or even a film. This role is at the front of the development team. They must read screenplays and see if the storyline/plot is fitting for the audience members. Development producers begin to work with screenwriters, as if they think that certain things in the script need changing; they will they make notes for the screenwriter to change to make it more fitting. This process can take a long time because you never know when it can start going into production, it may take years. However, the roles may change for a development producer if they begin to work in tv drama. This could be like they have to pitch ideas and concepts for tv and must present it in front of people. If you want to become a development producer, having a degree in any production or film would be more helpful. Usually starting at a low level and working your way up is the best way; development teams mostly have development assistant producer. This is helpful as you gain the experience and helps you grow in the industry. To be a development producer, having certain key skills will make you the best version of a producer you can be. These are like: having key knowledge of new agents and talents in the industry, having management of database information, experience of handling confidential or controversial information with sensitivity, and communication. These skills are needed as a development producer, you work with a bunch of people (or possibly will). These are like: executive producer, development assistant, screenwriter, story producer, script editor and researcher. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7bDay9YALk Here is an example of producer Bill Lawrence explaining how to pitch for a tv show in 2 minutes. Development producers read screenplays, analyse their strengths and weaknesses and assess if they have potential and will appeal to audiences. A producer is like a development producer however, producers handle the financial and practical side when it comes to film and tv. This makes producers important as they are the

decision makers, they are the reason things get produced. This means producers hire the writers for story ideas or even secure rights to the scripts. Producers have the responsibility of deciding on the budget or the film/tv to help them get financing from investors. This means producers work quite closely with directors as they want to understand the directors’ creative ideas to see if it can match production cost. Producers have a lot of responsibilities and are the ones that must solve problems throughout production. In addition to that, they are the ones who are able to/ allowed to approve locations and will hire the team to give them roles for their production. However, a producer can’t be delegating jobs all the time and is why there is line producer where certain roles can get delegated to them. Producers must be able to work with everyone and have good communication skills as they need to be able to keep a good working environment. Not only that, but they must make sure people’s health and safety come first as it is a legal responsibility. As a producer a range of skills you must be good at are having an extensive knowledge of a creative process (this is like screenwriting, editing etc), organisation is important as a producer to be on track in a production (especially with financial budgets), and having good leadership skills. Having good leadership skills as a producer is so significant as running a production means you are on a tight schedule and can’t have anyone slacking at their job. This means the producer will be using their leadership skills to make sure things are going the right way, and that roles have been delegated properly. To become a producer, start thinking about education and what degree you want to do. While getting a degree, an internship/ apprenticeship where you can explore and practice the skills you have been learning about. When wanting to become a producer, it is important to start building a portfolio and by doing this create a short film that represents your work best. Having a portfolio means you can show it to people in the creative industry and that is how you can start becoming a producer. Here is a case study of Louise Say and her experience throughout the years as a producer including Les Misérables https://www.screenskills.com/case-studies/producer-louise-say/. A producer will work with a writer (or writers) to hammer out a treatment, and then a script for production, as well as oversee any rewrites. Another job role we focus on is directors. The directors are the people who become the creative leads for production. They are like producers where they follow the process through pre-production, production as well as postproduction (start, middle, end). The director is usually employed by the producer for this role. They also work with the screenwriters as they develop the script. However, as soon as the production has company, the director will begin to work with producers during production. They also work with directory of photography, assistant director and production designer. When they are ready to introduce actors, directors will be involved with

casting directors and producers to select actors for a role. Not only will directors be instructing actors, but they will also be instructing other crew members on set such as lighting and make-up artist. Once they have finished filming, the lead the editing which prepares for a directors cut. To be a director, certain skills will be needed to be good at your job, these are like: leadership as you need to be able to get your visions to life, imagination the directors need to have a vision for the film, they need to have a knowledge of film and tv and be able to understand all genres, staying calm when under pressure as you have to be able to handle certain situations and understanding the production process throughout it. If you want to become a director there is a range of things and qualifications to become one. You can take qualifications such as theatre, drama, English, film studies or even media studies. To get into the creative industry as a writer, you may consider building a portfolio of work you have created to get a job. Here is an example of directors responsibilities you may want to look into https://www.cgi.org.uk/professional-development/careers/directors-duties . Directors go into an overview of duties, companies as well as opportunities. director takes over from the writer to take it into the next phase. It is imperative for the both of them to work in harmony so that the vision and expression of the Writer can be seamlessly passed on to the Director. Agents are a way to help other people get into the creative industry. You mainly hear about agents helping actors get roles or writers pitch ideas or work with producers. Agents may work independently or with a company that have other agents in that help people get the jobs they want. To be an agent there are a range of skills that would be useful to the job that they are doing. These are like: negotiation and selling skills as this is one way to make their client look good, good organisation skills as you do not want to double book anyone or yourself, and ambition be adamant that they will get that role with your help. To become an agent, your main experience would be working in PR. Not only that but would be useful if you were involved with things like social media and content management. An example of a UK based literacy agent is Felicity Blunt. Felicity Blunt is a literary agent at publishing talent such as Curtis Brown. A literary agent helps get writers stories made into books. They must read as many books as possible and find the best ones who would have a publisher willing to turn their stories into books. Here is an example of some of her clients.

Writers are one of the main reasons halves of the stories are on our screens. They can writer and develop screenplays for either theatre, film or tv. When writers work in this industry, they work with a lot of other people such as producers and directors. When working in film, screenwriters will mainly write three drafts and the third draft be known as ‘the polish’. The polished version is the one that writers will pitch to the producer or even a studio like The Warner Brothers studio. Once the work is picked, it will then be developed and worked on with a development producer to make sure it is ready for production. To be a good screenwriter, you need to make sure have a good knowledge of screenwriting and understand the knowledge of screenplay. In addition, you need to make sure you have creativity when wanting to become a screenwriter. Just like a director, a screenwriter may want to consider working on theatre and drama, English, film studies and media studies to get a degree and become a screenwriter. Here is an article that shows good examples of some screenplays https://www.scriptreaderpro.com/best-screenplays-to-read/ . Commissioning bodies and corporationsCommissioning bodies means we look at different jobs that come under the production. This is like the development producers has a responsibility (like I mentioned before) to explore and search for new talents. Doing this means new talents might suit the new production you want to make. When we talk about commissioning bodies we also think about corporations and look at major corporations such as the BBC. CorporationsThe BBC offer a lot of opportunities when it comes to the creative media. This is like the writer’s room, where the department purposely seek out new writers to develop their own talent. This major corporation begin writers’ groups to be there as a support system for new writers. This could be like script advice, offering career advice, and talent imitative. If you are

an eager writer and want to join a major corporation like this, the BBC look for unique voices, someone who has a different mindset and will bring fresh ideas to the screen. Not only that, but the BBC run other groups if you are looking to go into a different section in the creative media. So, this is like the Drama room, short from content, writers access group, and tv drama writers’ group. Being in the BBC writers room means there are some requirements to be met. The staff attend development meetings which means you get to explore being/working as an internal agent. This means you can also suggest writers for any specific projects you think they might work well at. Not only that but the BBC is a large company where you will work in partnership with BBC studios and independent companies. Independent production companiesWhen it comes to independent/ smaller companies it means it is harder to present yourself and to get the role as a writer. Therefore, a lot of companies (even bigger companies like Warner studios) have writers pitch ideas to them. Pitching is helpful if you are an unknown writer as well for the company as you are cheaper. Independent companies sometimes even do their own script editing and may even be financing from larger companies/ corporations. It is important that really sell yourself to the audience you are speaking to as you must keep them engaged. An example of this is the tv show Sherlock, Stephen Moffat and Mark Gatiss came up with the original idea and got funding from a company called Hartswood film which both pitched the BBC (a large corporation) to pitch for funding, which later turned into a successful series. This meant that because the success rates of the show were good, they earn back the amount of funding that was given to them in the first place.

Independent production will have a story > they find a company (like the BBC) to support them in production. Independent producersJust like independent production companies, independent producers sort of work similarly to them. This is because although producers in the creative industry with things like having freedom to choose the crew and to find finance to produce a screenplay. However, producers hold a lot of responsibility especially if the finished product is not successful; they must answer to financers why. An independent producer even must search for their own writer and try and convince them to join the production. Therefore, pitching is also important for independent producers. Independent producer seeks out a writer > writer will write their story > get financial support to go into production. OrganisationsOrganisations are a support system in the creative industry. This could be to support financially or to give you information to find things out. Organisations that you can look at are Screen skills and the BBC. Screen skills is a website/ organisation that produces information about certain job roles in the industry. In addition to that, but they give out training options where if you want a certain career in the creative industry, you will be able to understand what it is. However, screen skills are a website that doesn’t provide the financial support on screenwriting or any production. CompetitionsCompetitions are a way to find new talented people like writers to come into the industry and experience the role of a writer. Like mentioned before, the BBC offer competitions such as the writer’s room to seek new and eager writers. The good thing about this competition is that it is run in Britain as well as internationally. This means that the BBC are finding new writers to have a more unique mindset and fresh ideas. Writer signs up to competition > wins the competition > their story can get produced. An example of another competition is the UK film festival script competition. To enter, writers must submit a script any Treatment /Outline you wish to include for example – a brief synopsis and a more expanded breakdown of Acts and Scenes or story events; the world of the story; and the major character

profiles but only up to 6 pages in total. You need to be English to submit the story and all screenplays must be original. Winner will receive immediate marketing to the industry. Commissioning bodies summaryScripts have many ways to go into production. The first one is a development producer can seek out a writer to write a story that they have an idea for. This then gets edited and approved once they seek financial pay and means they start on production. The next one is that a writer may seek out a producer to get their work done and if their work is liked It may go into production. In addition, things like independent companies and producers will seek out companies to give them financial support to let their story go into production. Optioning is where the writer/author is giving the rights of their own story that they produced to our production company or someone else to try to get a movie. This means writers may even get more money through optioning. An example of this could be getting the rights off a writer to produce their work into a theatre production from a film so like les mis. The role of the writer throughout – Pre-production- Pre-production is probably one of the most important sections and roles the writer goes through throughout the whole production process. This is because it’s where the main plot is getting produced. The writers have a role to produce a story that is around one hundred and twenty pages long, involving scenes and dialogue. This is the planning process that may take a while to produce before production has begun. It also means pre-production is important because it begins to help the producer understand what the budget will be like for the film they want to produce. Also, I’m pre-production you still have time to adjust the script if need be, by using the team around you. So, this is like: script editors, directors and producers to suit the story more.

PlanningWhen speaking of pre-production, you instantly link it to planning as you must be very thorough when creating a story. Therefore, writers take a long-time planning what they want to produce and even add little details into it. Planning means you can understand where the story is starting and ending and know what is going to happen to the characters throughout. In addition to that, like I said before with pre-production having a good plan on the story helps with the films budget and if you can have that certain scene in. Script editingThroughout scripts, there is a lot of things that get covered. A script coverage means/ is a way to analysis during a script development. However, another development that is important throughout the production process is script changing/ editing. This could mean that you are changing the script to fit the budget, or you may want to change the characters. They may be adjusting the script so that the production has a higher chance to get commissioned. Not only that, but these scripts can be changed at any time throughout whether that be pre-production or production. This could be down to location changes or it not fitting to the story. Director involvementDirectors have a lot of involvement when it comes to the script as well as setting out the scene. Directors or even producers may change the script to make it fit more to the story line and scene they want to carry out. Not only that, but it may be that they want a creative change and try to make it different and original as possible. An example of this is director Steven Spielberg didn’t direct Indiana Jones 5 and instead was directed Logan’s James Mangold because of disagreements on set. The script kept constantly changing and meant it delayed production. There were multiple interviews and one where David Koepp stated: "I tried a couple different versions with Steven and they all had some good stuff about them and they all had some stuff that didn't work, which happens. But it was just very hard to have everybody come together and have all the elements — Steven, Harrison (Ford), the script and Disney — come together at once. And it didn't." Shooting scripts are different from screenplays. Screenplays are what happen in preproduction where it’s the characters dialogue and more. Shooting scripts are a different version of screenplays where they are used during the production process of a film or show. Shooting scripts are usually made by the cinematographer or director instead of a writer. This is because the director will be able to discuss ideas such as shoot scripts and break the scenes down. As it progresses, the shooting scripts will then be labelled with camera angles and movements as well as shots. So, an example of this could be the director deciding to add an establishing shot for the opening scene. Page lock downPage lockdown is a process that happens during production when there is changes made to the script. This happens when the scene doesn’t match up to the plot or they feel that the scene doesn’t go great. It means then that page goes on lockdown and then gets coded. This means that there will be a range of handwritten notes where they want either actors or even the set to change. Having the page coded and in a different colour helps people know which script has been updated so the page will have page 69A instead of 69. The WGA order is: • White Draft (original) • Blue Revision • Pink Revision • Yellow Revision • Green Revision • Goldenrod Revision • Buff Revision • Salmon Revision • Cherry Revision • Second Blue Revision • Second Pink Revision • Second Yellow Revision • Second Green Revision • Second Goldenrod Revision • Second Buff Revision

• Second Salmon Revision • Second Cherry Revision Adjustment during shooting stageWe can always wonder why the outcome of a film has turned out that way and it may be down to the script changing during the shooting stage. Things during shooting may be changed due to the budget of the film, actors or even having serious injuries on set. An example of this is Brandon Lee died on set filming ‘The Crow’ in 1994. This was because the scene was using a gun in as a prop which hadn’t been cleaned out properly and meant debris hit Brandon’s chest. He was rushed to hospital but died because of losing too much blood. However, this meant that adjustments had to be made for the film such as having stunt doubles and CGI effects. So, this meant the director and other people going over the script to make it suitable. Working as a writer: Agent representation- PaymentsWhen we look at writers, we always wonder how much they get paid especially when the film or tv show is a big hit. Writers could earn up to $77,260. However, there is certain positions and deals writers must go through to get this money. The first one you have is against, against is the value of the script unproduced against a produced script. You then have option which is a contracted agreement between the producer and writer which means they will hold ownership and rights of a screenplay. After that, you gave the guarantee which means as a writer you will have money guaranteed as well as paid upfront by producers whether the film gets into production or not. However, it will be made into a step-deal which means the money is paid in gradual payments according to targets the writer must hit. So, this could be like a three-step deal where they have a draft, a final and then a polish which means the writer is being paid for all three. Finally, writers may even get bonuses depending on box office sales wether they are successful or not. In addition to this, you may get paid differently depending on what type of job you are in. This is like film writers even up to $100,000 to $1 million to sell a feature length script. Where as tv writer have a working 20-week contract and could earn up to $3,800 a week. Here is a range of examples of how much writers can earn up to https://www.socreate.it/en/blogs/screenwriting/who-are-the-highest-paidscreenwriters . Time managementTime management is important especially when creating a production. There could be many problems such as actors schedule or incidents that happen on set that may affect the time management of production. A good example of this is on set of ‘The Maze Runner’ where the

actor Dylan O’Brien had an injury on set. This meant that it caused production to stop as it was a very serious head injury. It caused everything to stop and made the film come out later. Not only that, but he was starring in a tv show called ‘Teen Wolf’. This meant that both production teams had to schedule well to make sure he was able to star in both. However, because of his injury it meant when he starred in Maze Runner after recovering, he couldn’t be in the last season of ‘Teen wolf’. Professional presentationWhen it comes to presentation, presenting yourself is very important. Making sure that you present yourself well helps you pitch your idea to the audience. So, this is like making sure you are confident and have a lot of projection during pitch. This will help the audience become more engaged and more interested in what you say. In addition to that but being confident on your idea helps convince your audience that your pitch is good and that it will be successful. When it comes to film, you must make sure you are engaging the person you want to pitch your idea to otherwise you could instantly get a no from them. You need to be sure that it is a good idea otherwise you will not get the funding you need for your production. Not only that but making sure that you dress nicely and more presentable will help as well. In addition to that, presenting your work is an important matter for the pitch because that is your main idea and is why you are there in the first place. It is important that you present yourself well, but your work must be presented better. This is like laying your work out in an organised manner and making sure that the presentation flows better. So having a beginning where you introduce your pitch (idea/product) to then expand on it to then finish it off with allowing the audience to ask any questions would be a good way to present your work. Having a good presentation for your work is important because it neatens everything together.

DO’s and don’ts in presentationIn pitching/ presenting there is a lot of things you should follow and do that will help it make successful. The first thing you want to do is be prepared for you presentation. Being prepared is so important as you will look confident as well as know everything about the idea you are producing. So, this is like writing cards with little notes on to remind yourself and be easy to see instead of looking at a PowerPoint. Throughout a presentation, you want to make sure you are speaking slow and clearly so that your audience understands. There is no point speaking quickly to get the presentation over and done with because nothing will stick out towards the audience. Not only that, but make sure when you are speaking to have volume

and project, you want to get your idea across, and you want to be heard. However, you must be careful and make sure that you are not patronising your audience, you don’t want to offend them on any way. When presenting you want to make sure that you are polite and passionate. There is no point in pitching an idea you are not passionate about. If the audience can see that you are passionate about the idea, you want to produce it could go a long way. Being passionate will make it look like you are going to be dedicated and that it is worth the people you are pitching to spend their money on this production. Throughout your presentation, you must be able to take criticism on board. In the creative industry there will always be a lot of changes and criticism when it comes to scripts, actors etc and if they see that you cannot handle changing your ideas a little bit, they may not think working with you is suitable for them. It may even be them helping you improve on your idea to make the production more successful. Finally, there is no point in presenting an idea if you are not yourself. Being yourself will help people get an understanding of what it is like to work with you. In your presentation you don’t want to come of as patronising or rude, so make sure you are treating people with respect. Don’t come unprepared, this will not help sell your pitch to people! In addition to this you don’t want to have bad time management, you must meet the deadlines that are set. Legal and ethical considerationsImportant ethical issues to consider include etiquette, fraudulent publication, plagiarism, duplicate publication, author- ship, and potential for conflict of interest. An example of this is the Jeffery Dahmer series. This was because the victim’s families were not asked to produce this series and when they did ask to stop, they didn’t. This meant it was an ethical issue as it was disrespectful. What is plagiarism? Plagiarism is when someone has presented someone else’s work without asking for their consent. There are different forms to plagiarism such as: verbatim, cutting and pasting and paraphrasing. Plagiarism is unethical and means you are trying to take credit for someone else’s work. In the creative industry this is frowned upon. An example of plagiarism is the film Frozen (2013), a film that was made before Frozen was a very similar story (titled ‘The Snow Queen’). It’s plot along with characters included were very similar. It even got to the point where there was a lawsuit made against Disney, but they were able to get rid of the lawsuit. They went to court and made a settlement which both sides of the parties were happy with, and the case were dismissed.

What is copy right? Copyright is when the owner is allowed to protect their work against other people who may copy or reproduce their work. Copyright automatically comes along when the work is original and needs to originate to the author. So, this means copy right is usually surrounded in the creative industry. You may see copyright more with original literary work, dramatic works, musicals, films, sound recordings and broadcasting. An example of where a film has been accused of copyright is ‘Zootopia’. ‘Zootopia’ was accused of copyright from a screenwriter named Gary L Goldman suggested that the animation powerhouse helped the idea for ‘Zootopia’ which was from a pitch he did that was unsuccessful in the 2000’s. Unfortunately, these claims were dropped for Gary as they felt that the connections, he had made were too strained. Bias; - Bias is known as “implies a pervasive or widespread bias contravening of the standards of journalism, rather than the perspective of an individual journalist or article” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_bias . This could mean that the screenplay that the writer has produced may have made someone feel misinterpreted and not be shown properly. However, because of this it can lead to many lawsuits and cases against production. An example of this is Netflix series ‘Making a Murder’ where they left out key evidence throughout the series. So, because of this it made the series feel biased, along with how the police department look in this series. Libel and defamationWhat is libel and why should screenwriters be aware of it? Defamation (which is verbal) is when an organisation (or tv/ film production in our case) uses certain language to ruin a reputation of a person or a certain business. Written defamation of what we class as libel is when anything is published or broadcast. As a screenwriter you must be careful what you write and produce when creating a story, especially if it is based on a true story. False light is an example of something a screenwriter must be careful of. False light is when you are falsely stating something was a good thing, yet a victim is still damaged by it. Therefore, certain shows that explore popular serial killer cases, or the royal family, or even something that is historic must tread very lightly around it. An example of this is the new Jeffery Dahmer series on Netflix, although there have been multiple shows made about him, the newest series didn’t ask the victim’s families for permission. Not only that, but the show is a reenactment as well as focusing on the younger years of his life. It means the

families must relive through it and makes it an unethical thing for the producers and screenwriters to do. Watersheds, Censorship and certificationPersonally, when I think about creating a script, I would say the target audience is always a top priority. The shows you are creating are for the audience entertainment. You must think the age range and what might your show aim more towards. In addition to this, thinking of censorship is very important when writing a screenplay because you must think is this appropriate to the audience, I want it to be aimed at? If you have a lot of swearing or nudity included, you must think what would be good for the audience. When thinking of creating a script, a writer needs to consider where their work is getting produced, if it’s a tv show where is it getting published and would it be appropriate if it was on at a certain time of day? Therefore, censorship gets included in media as they need to know if certain things are appropriate for daytime television. So, an example of this would be ‘The Jeremy Kyle Show’, even though it was daytime people were swearing so the had to censor the swearing to make it appropriate.
