Sanatan Dinda B 1971
S anatan Dinda is a first class graduate in painting from the Government
College of Arts and Crafts in Kolkata. Equally deft at painting, drawing,
sculptures, mural making and installations, Sanatan’s work adorns an
illusionary and spiritual tone. Keen on experimentation, his imagery
includes ordinary men and women as well as Buddha and other icons that
comes in layers with foliage, calligraphy and other markings in the
background adding to their visual appeal. Though currently preoccupied
with three dimensional sculptural paintings of figures that transcend the
two dimensional limitations of a canvas, his earlier work appeared more
in abstraction and landscape format.
In his short career span, Sanatan has received many awards starting with
inter college competitions to the prestigious Birla Academy award. His
work has been shown all over India as well an in the US, Singapore, Dubai
and London. Sculpture being his forte, he has been able to incorporate
figures standing in relief from his beautifully executed canvases. He
infuses his characters with a three dimensional quality, which transcends
the medium of an otherwise flat canvas, the deep cracks symbolising the
harsh realities of life. He has exhibited extensively in India and
internationally, in both group and solo shows and is now renowned for
his skill in body-painting which is executed live.

S tudied at the Kala Bhavan Visva Bharoti University in Santiniketan where
she gained a Bachelors degree in Painting 1993.
She has participated in over thirty group shows throughout India and
conducted one solo exhibition.
Her work is held in numerous international collections. In her work she
juxtaposes memories of the past with the present through using a poetic
artistic language. Autobiographical in content she seeks to dig into her
own bank of memories and the unconscious realms to explore the hidden
depths which exist there. As a consequence she unearths that which has
been lost in time and brings it forth with a dynamic and vibrant energy.
Particularly striking is her use of color, which works in curious
combinations and contrasts. She usually creates this contrast by placing a
warm color tone along with a cooler one, and as a result the surface has
depth and dimension.
The variation in planes keeps the viewer's eyes engaged, on the dynamic
interplay between the past and the present, leaving the viewer trying to
grope with the overall effect that is generated. She uses motifs, which
belong to the world of flora and fauna and this brings an element of
tradition in the overall design, but the flat, graphic background and
strong linear contours evoke a sense of gravity that strengthens the
surface.

Her work is like a continuously evolving creation which is being woven
from a desire to deepen her connect and to explore the unconscious
and unspoken truths which lie in her experience and in the recesses of
her mind.
ANIL KR. YADAV
b 1984
Trying to stay as true to the subject, Anil’s works appear photographic or
naturalistic. The religious Ghats of Varanasi and Haridwar and other ancient
places attracted him for their cultural heritage. His artwork is a photographic
rendition of the antique doors, temples, old architecture and other memories from
his childhood. Anil’s talent lies in his ability to capture the mysticism and
spirituality of his memories. His works hold a beauty that cannot be described in
words.
A common theme in his paintings is a depiction of a cluster of brass bells in
shades of faded gold draw that the attention to the manner in which the artist
has chosen to highlight them. The canvas looks like as if the metal objects were
in conversation with one another. The red background behind bears a testimony
to their clandestine conversations. The purpose isn’t determined nor is the
actuality. But it is there as a question, a realisation of the mood identified as
ordinary but holding something secret, guarded as if it were sacred.
