― Anton Pavlovich Chekhov “The role of the artist is to ask questions, not answer them.”

Born in 1949 in Patiala, India, Gurcharan Singh is an acclaimed Indian painter, known for his figurative paintings. He studied at Government College of Arts and Crafts, Chandigarh. His signature paintings are based on people from a financially compromising class, specifically focusing on underprivileged and exploited women. The Red Light in Black and White and Les Miserables are two of his notable works. His works have been displayed at various solo shows and group exhibitions in India and abroad. "Art for me is an expression. People around me is my inspirations. When I sit before the Canvas it happens. Images flow from my imagination are those of a parrot, face and the inhabitant that grows and changes every minute like nature. Though to the common eye it may appear familiar but in truth this is my world made visible from the invisible." says Singh With time, the artist explored the relationships between various elements that make up this world. Most noteworthy is his practice of juxtaposing animals with prostitutes, a recurrent theme, that dominates his paintings. Using them as symbols to expose the primitivity in humans, he explores the links between animal and human nature. In 1976 he received the National Award and in 1991 received the Padma Shri from the Government of India, New Delhi. Gurucharan Singh B 1949

Thota Vaikuntam is a legendary contemporary Indian artist from Telangana, which has served as a perpetual source of inspiration for his art. His longstanding muses are the sensuous and voluptuous women of his hometown, with their omnipresent red bindis and colorful saris that highlight their dusky skin. In order to best capture the simple lifestyle of the villagers from Telangana, art by Thota Vaikuntam uses similarly simple colors in his original paintings and fine art prints. He explains, “I like using rich, primary colors in my paintings, which give them a sense of character and depth. Red, saffron and even orange are essentially Indian colors, and I use them extensively. However, colors that are a mix of two are not natural since they don’t exist in surroundings around us, in our everyday life.” Thota Vaikuntam B 1942

Dhananjay Singh was born in 1977 in Hajipur, Bihar. He completed his Bachelor’s degree in sculpture from the Faculty of Visual Arts of Banaras Hindu University, followed by a Master’s degree in the same from the M S University, Vadodara. Singh also briefly served as a visiting faculty member at the National Institute of Fashion Technology in Gandhinagar. Singh has won many awards and scholarships including the Commonwealth Arts and Crafts Award, London, in 2005; the INLAKS Fine Art award, New Delhi, in 2005; the National Lalit Kala Akademi Award, New Delhi, in 2002; and a Gold Medal from Banaras Hindu University, in 2000. In 2006, Singh was selected by the Commonwealth Foundation to participate in a residency program at the Faculty of Art and Design at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. During his stay in Melbourne, Singh witnessed the skillful use of bronze by his co-students and lecturers. This inspired him to experiment with the same technique, and eventually lead to the establishment of his own unique sculptural practice involving building figures out of intricately twined bronze and copper wires. Paresh Maity was born in Tamluk, a suburban town near the Bay of Bengal who has been a prolific painter in a short career span with a unique place in the Indian art scene who was often referred to as the “William Turner of India”. There is the unmistakable ‘soulfulness’ of mood and memory, sweep and slash of colours and the transparent depth of his watercolor that makes Maity’s artistry a wonderful coalescence of art and thought. He weaves into his psychological stream the many faces of nature — the colours of the sea and the pitter-patter of raindrops. Nature has always been a part of his psyche and surroundings. Throughout Paresh’s childhood, nature was omnipresent. He lived in a time where one had to become either an engineer or a doctor. Nevertheless, he went to Kolkata then to Delhi to pursue art but lacking the financial capacity to enroll in the College of Art, he went back to Kolkata. Here is where he had the glimpse of the works of the Western masters such as Rembrandt, Turner, Constable, Winslow Homer to name a few at the Victoria Memorial Hall which he used to visit. Seeing their works sparked in him the desire to be like them; he wanted to be known as a hardworking artist. In awe of Rembrandt’s way of using light, he tried to capture his method and simultaneously admired the impressionists, the cubist phase of Picasso but considered Rembrandt, Homer and Turner to be his favorites. He traveled all over India, and anywhere he went, he painted nature but felt that his understanding of it was never enough. At the onset of the 90s, figures started to appear in his works as opposed to the traditional landscapes from his early years. Figures of men and women, animals and birds became part of his watercolour, a medium which he had come to master. Paresh despised the harsh side of life which reflected in his paintings which are all soft and soothing. Paresh Mai ty B 1965

“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” – Edgar Degas

Bothsa did his B.F.A from Andhra University followed by M.F.A from Banaras Hindu University. His brightly coloured fulsome figuration inlayed with busy embellishments of all kinds and forms- may be taken from natural elements or sourced from media and photographs such as cityscapes or the advertising world or Bollywood or technological gadgets or even scenes from abroad, appear familiar and fun filled on a first glance but somewhat strange and surrealist on a closer study. His larger-thanlife exuberant dramatic sculptures in fiberglass come in a mix of mythology and cinematic reverie. His artistic career includes working in different tribal art and life museums for the Andhra Government as well as hundreds of sculptures and installations that he has created on commission for public and private collections across the State and beyond.
