Would rather…คอื อะไรนะ???

ปกติเราใช้ like เพอ่ื บอกวา่ ชอบใคร, อะไร หรอื ชอบทา
อะไร แต่เมือ่ มกี ารเปรียบเทียบวา่ “ชอบมากกว่า” ต้องยกให้

rather ซ่ึงมหี ลกั การใช้แตกตา่ งกัน มาดูกนั เลยค่ะ

หลกั การใช้ Prefer, Would prefer, Would rather เมอ่ื ชอบมากกวา่

Prefer, Would prefer, Would rather หมายถึง “ชอบ....
มากกว่า....” หรอื “อยาก....มากกวา่ ....” แตล่ ะคามีหลักการใชท้ ่แี ตกต่างกันดงั น้ี

Prefer

- prefer + something + to + something else.
เปน็ การบอกว่า ชอบบางสิง่ มากกว่าอีกส่งิ หน่ึง โดยใช้ to เปน็ ตัวเชือ่ ม ในโครงสร้าง

S + prefer(s) + Noun1 + to + Noun2
เช่น

I prefer tea to coffee. (ฉนั ชอบชามากกว่ากาแฟ)
Noun 1 = tea / Noun 2 = coffee

She prefers a fountain pen to a ball-point pen. (เธอชอบปากกาหมึกซึมมากกว่าปากกาลกู ล่ืน)
Noun 1 = a fountain pen / Noun 2 = a ball-point pen

- prefer + doing something to doing something else.
เปน็ การบอกวา่ ชอบการทาอะไรมากกวา่ การทาอะไรอีกอย่างหน่ึง โดยใช้ to เป็นตวั เช่อื ม ใน
โครงสร้าง

S + prefer(s) + Gerund1 (v.ing) + to Gerund2 (v.ing)
เชน่

I prefer walking to cycling. (ฉนั ชอบการเดนิ มากกวา่ การขี่จกั รยาน)
Athiwara prefers running to swimming. (อาทิวราห์ชอบการว่ิง
มากกว่าการวา่ ยนา้ )

ข้อควรจา

1. ทังสองโครงสร้างนีเป็นการใช้ prefer กับคา้ นาม
2. โครงสร้างท่ีสอง V.ing คอื Gerund (กรยิ าเตมิ ing ท่ที า้ หนา้ ท่ีเปน็ คา้ นาม)
3. เชื่อมดว้ ย to ซ่ึงหนา้ to และ หลัง to จะตอ้ งเปน็ คา้ ประเภทเดยี วกัน คือ ถา้ เป็นคา้ นามกต็ ้อง
เปน็ คา้ นามทงั สองคา้ เชน่ I prefer tea to coffee. หรอื ถา้ เป็น Gerund กต็ ้อง
เปน็ Gerund ทงั สองค้า เชน่ I prefer walking to cycling.
4. ห้ามใช้ prefer กับ than

- prefer + to do something rather than (do) something else.
เปน็ การบอกวา่ ชอบทาบางสงิ่ มากกว่าทาอีกส่งิ หน่งึ โดยใช้ rather than เป็นค้าเช่ือม ในโครงสร้าง

S + prefer + to V.1 + rather than + V.1/noun
เช่น

Nida prefers to stay here rather than go there.
(นิดาชอบอยู่ท่ีน่มี ากกวา่ ไปที่น่นั )
I prefer to drive rather than travel by train.
(ฉันชอบขับรถมากกวา่ เดนิ ทางโดยรถไฟ)
Children prefer to watch television rather than reading.
(เดก็ ๆ ชอบดูทีวมี ากกว่าการอ่านหนงั สอื )

ขอ้ สงั เกต : ค้าท่ีอยหู่ น้าและหลัง rather than เป็นค้าคนละประเภทกนั ก็ได้ เชน่ Children

would prefer แปลว่า อยากมากกวา่ ใช้ในสถานการณเ์ ฉพาะเจาะจงมากกวา่ prefer โดย
would prefer จะตามด้วย to + infinitive หรอื คา้ นาม ดังนี

- would prefer ตามด้วย to infinitive (V.1) โครงสรา้ ง คอื

S + would prefer + to infinitive (V.1)

S + would prefer + noun

I’d prefer fruit juice to water. (ฉนั อยากนา้ ผลไมม้ ากกว่านา้ เปลา่ )
I’d prefer playing outdoors to watching television.
(ฉันอยากเลน่ ข้างนอกมากกว่าการดูทวี ี)

Q: Would you prefer tea or coffee? (คุณต้องการชาหรอื กาแฟ)

ข้อสงั เกต : การใช้ตวั เช่ือม to หรือ rather than ใช้หลักเดียวกับ prefer

would rather

1.would rather (do) = would prefer (to do) หมายถึง อยากมากกวา่ แต่
would rather จะตามด้วยคากรยิ าชอ่ ง 1 โดยไม่ตอ้ งมี to (infinitive without to)
(ประธานตวั เดยี ว และพูดถงึ ปจั จุบนั หรืออนาคต)โครงสร้าง คือ

S + would rather + V.1
หรือใช้ than เป็นตวั เชือ่ มได้ ในโครงสร้าง

S + would rather + V.1 + than + V.1
เช่น

His wife would rather rent a house. (ภรรยาของเขาอยากเช่าบา้ นมากกว่า)
I’d rather go by car. (ฉันอยากไปด้วยรถยนต์มากกวา่ )

I’d rather use a keyboard than write with a pen.
(ฉันอยากใชค้ ียบ์ อร์ดมากกว่าเขยี นดว้ ยปากกา)

2.ถ้าในประโยคมีประธาน 2 ตวั ทพ่ี ดู ถึงปัจจบุ นั หรืออนาคต มีโครงสร้างประโยคดังนี้
Subject 1 + would rather + subject 2 + V2(…than)

เช่น

4. ถา้ ในประโยคมีประธาน 2 ตัว ทพี่ ูดถึงเร่อื งในอดีต มีโครงสร้างประโยคดงั นี
