The Use of Simple Present Tense
We use Simple Present tense to express :
* Everyday activities
* Routines, habits
* General truths
Example:
He works in a big office in Jakarta.
She usually gets up at half past five but I
get up at six o'clock in the morning.
The sun rises in the east.
The Structure of Simple Present Tense :
A. Simple Present Tense with Be :
Be in the present form : is/am/are
I + am
He, She, It + is
You, We, They + are
Positive Sentence :
(+) S + is/am/are + Obj. + (Adv. Of time)
Example :
* Santi’s dress is new.
* I am a student.
* They are football players.
Negative Sentence :
(-) S + is/am/are + not + Obj. + (Adv. Of time)
Example :
* Santi’s dress isn’t old.
* I am not a teacher.
* They aren’t basketball players.
Interrogative Sentence :
(?) Is/Am/Are + S + Obj. + (Adv.Of time) + ?
Example :
* Is Santi’s dress new ?
(+) Yes, it is. (-) No, it isn’t.
* Are they football players ?
(+) Yes, they are. (-) No, they aren’t
B. Simple Present Tense with verb
We use Verb 1 for subject :
I, you, we, they and plural noun.
Positive Sentence :
(+) S + verb 1 + Obj. + Adv. Of time.
Example :
We often have breakfast together.
The children play in the yard in the evening.
I get up at five .
Negative Sentence :
(-) S + do not (don’t) + verb 1 + Obj.

xample :
We don’t have lunch together.
The children don’t play in the yard in the
afternoon.
I don’t get up at six.
Interrogative Sentence :
(?) Do + S + Verb 1 + Obj. + (Adv. of time) + ?
Example :
Do we have breakfast together ?
(+) Yes, we do (-) No, we don’t
Do the children play in the yard in
the afternoon ?
(+) Yes, they do (-) No, they don’t
We use Verb 1 + -s/-es for subject :
He, She, It (Third person singular) and
Singular noun.
Positive Sentence :
(+) S + verb 1+-s/-es + Obj. + (Adv. Of time)
Example :
Dr. Mario takes her in his car.
Miss Maria watches TV in the evening.
The dog jumps over the river.
Negative Sentence :
(-) S + does not(doesn’t) + verb 1 + Obj.
Example :
Mr. Mario doesn’t take her in his car.
Miss Maria doesn’t eat much.
The dog doesn’t run along the river.
Interrogative Sentence :
(?) Does + S + verb 1 + Obj. + (Adv. of time) + ?
Example :
Does Dr. Mario take her in his car ?
(+) Yes, he does. (-) No, he doesn’t.
Does Miss Maria eat very little ?
(+) Yes, she does. (-) No, she doesn’t.
Adverb of Frequency
We often used adverbs of frequency
with
Simple present tense.
The example of adverbs of frequency :
always, often, usually, sometimes,
seldom,
rarely, ever, never.
Example :
- Miss Maria usually travels to work by
train.
- We often have breakfast together.
