KAYMAYQUINN YOUTH

PADDLING GRANT

WE ARE IN OUR SECOND YEAR of offering this grant, available for youth up to the age of 18 to apply
to receive funds to help cover their course fees on a Paddle Canada course. In 2021, about 35 youth ben-
efited from this new program.
“I am sitting here, reflecting on our canoe course from yesterday with Wild by Nature, thanks, in part, to
the financial support from you. Seeing 14 Pathfinders go from a situation of near tips and bumper boats
to full confident launches and shore ‘parking’ in just one day warmed my heart. To see their confidence
grow from fear and anxiety to solid confidence and wanting to go again was exactly the type of transfor-
mation I had hoped for. The Pathfinders are already asking me when we can go again, so I know this is
an activity they will all carry with them as they grow. I wish to thank you from the bottom of my heart for
helping me share this experience with 14 youth.” —Sharlet, Pathfinder Leader, grant recipient in 2021

LEARN TO PADDLE,
YOU’LL LOVE WHERE

IT TAKES YOU

LEARN TO CANOE
Whether paddling at beach fronts, lakes, rivers or
oceans; using paddles or poles; paddling in the back-
country or teaching at summer camp or even learning
stylized movement, the Paddle Canada canoe
program offers something for everyone. Whether
new to canoeing or looking to take your skills up
a level, you will love where canoeing can take you.

LEARN TO SEA KAYAK
Learn to sea kayak on the ocean or your favorite lake,
big or small. There are five levels to the progression in Photo: Priscilla Haskin
Paddle Canada’s sea kayaking program, with the first
two levels designed to give new paddlers the tools and
confidence to venture out for a day of exploration.
There is a strong focus on safety in the entry-level
programs with lots of fun built in. The higher-level
programs will help the paddler hone in on advanced
skills, including navigation, paddling in more chal-
lenging conditions and advanced rescue skills.

LEARN TO STANDUP PADDLE
Learn to standup paddle on flat water, running
rapids on a river, surfing in big waves or touring
ocean environments. Standup paddleboards are
a unique and fun way to explore waterways, and
Paddle Canada’s courses are designed to teach you
efficient technique and give you the confidence to
stand up on the water.
LEARN TO RIVER KAYAK
River kayaks are very different from sea kayaks. They
are shorter, more compact and are not designed Photo: Diane Kiss
to paddle straight. In Paddle Canada’s river kayak
program, the first level is taught on flat water and
introduces the paddler to the slightly different
techniques required to control the kayak in moving
water. As you progress through the levels, you will
take to higher classes of water and learn advanced
skills and tricks.

LEARN TO CAMP
The newest program to Paddle Canada, the camping
program is designed to be a stand-alone course or
added to any of Paddle Canada’s paddling courses
for those wishing to take their canoe, kayak or
standup board camping. The entry-level course is
designed for anyone new to camping, and will teach
basic skills to live in your tent, in a frontcountry
setting, like a campground, and progress to give you
the skill set for longer expeditions, or as the lead on
a backcountry excursion. Photo: Karl Vollmer
