Appreciating the Work of
Ground Staff in OCC

May Day, or Labour Day, is celebrated on the 1st of May every year in honour of workers and their contributions.
This May Day 2021, let’s remember and appreciate the hard work and contributions of the many ground staff in
Orchid Country Club, who continue to tirelessly put in their best efforts to ensure good services and a friendly
enjoyable experience for Members and visitors to the Club.

“I always do my best. …… There is no such thing as can’t be done”

– Ms Amreteam, S&R Assistant, Social & Recreation Department

Ms Amreteam is a Social & Recreation (S&R) Assistant who helps out at the Gym in the
Club. We catch up with Ms Amreteam to understand what her job as an S&R Assistant
entails.

On Daily Responsibilities at Work
“The very first task that I do when I report for work is to ensure that the premise is clean. I will clean at least twice
in the morning and ensure that the machines in the Gym are cleaned every few hours for patrons’ usage. Other
than that, I also handle the registration of patrons, ensuring that they adhere to the necessary COVID-19 Safe
Distancing Measures and providing them with a set of fresh and clean towels for their activities. I will ensure that
everything is in order, such as making sure weights and machines are put in place and are in good condition, and
assisting patrons if they have any concerns about using the machines in general”.
On Maintaining a Positive Outlook
“I always do my best. I always take the initiative to try to know each gym patron to understand them better
regarding their needs and will do my upmost to make their day pleasant. This is because I know that any mistakes
or any standards that fall below their required expectations will spoil their day and I will not feel good about it.

Members are genuinely nice to me. Of course, initially when I just joined, I had a lot to learn after getting transferred
from another department, which was a steep learning curve for me then, in terms of job-related and other relevant
soft skills. However, I told myself to be open to learn and adjust. I started to get to know the gym patrons and
listen, understand and relate to their stories. To me, there is no such thing as can’t be done. “

“I have a strong sense of responsibility”

-Vincent, Senior Technician

Vincent is the Club’s Senior Technician from the Property & Maintenance department
and has been with the Club since 2014.
Ensuring everything runs like clockwork “I am responsible for the overall maintenance works
of the Club, from golf courses to hotel premises. I ensure that the electrical circuit boards
(known as OG Board) are maintained regularly so that electricity runs smoothly across the entire premise of the
Club, including the over 100 spotlights located in the golf courses.
Other times, I deal with emergency issues, such as troubleshooting, cleaning of equipment and plumbing works,
to ensure that everything runs like clockwork behind the scene.
Sense of Responsibility
I have a strong sense of responsibility. I will not leave any issues unresolved before I head home for the day. In
cases where the situation is critical or I can’t handle it myself, I will report to my site supervisor. Hence, to minimise
such incidents from happening, I always ensure that all prior checks are done to minimise malfunction issues.
Should such occurrences happen, I will try to resolve it at the first instance.”

“It is this sense of motivation that permeates and keeps me
going, especially in our line of work”

– Shu Peng, Hotel Resort Officer

Shu Peng, the Club’s Hotel Resort Officer, shares about her work responsibilities and
experiences.
Daily Responsibilities of Hotel Resort Officer
“My job as a Hotel Resort Officer gives me the opportunity to learn and share my passion for service
and hospitality. My main responsibilities include handling general enquiries ranging from providing directions in the club
to general information, such as information on the Club’s F&B outlets. *Yes! F&B outlets in OCC are open to Public! *
Sense of Appreciation
As a service provider, I understand that people have service expectations. We will not feel good about it too, if we
fall short of expectations. On the other hand, I have also received members’ and guests’ kindness and appreciation
through their feedback and gestures, which help me know that I have done my job well. It is this sense of motivation
that permeates and keeps me going, especially in our line of work.
Home Away From Home
In one particular instance, we had a long-staying guest who returned to his country for a short break after staying at our
hotel for several years. He returned to Singapore recently and contacted us for another stay. We promptly got the room
and amenities before his arrival date to welcome his return. To me, it is this friendly relationship built between the Club
and a guest that led to his choice of our hotel for his accommodation upon his return to Singapore!
A Better Post-Covid-19 World
The COVID-19 circuit-breaker period last year was a difficult time for us to reflect given the uncertainties and fears associated
with the pandemic. Nonetheless, the Club proactively took steps in ensuring that disruptions were minimized, and we
remained vigilant, adhered to the necessary health advisories and remained dedicated to our work.
As the current situation gets better, I hope to see the Club return as a busy and lively place where everyone can have
a safe and enjoyable time. I am truly thankful that I am part of the hospitality community and proud to be of service to
members, guests and fellow colleagues.”

“To me, teamwork is the key to hold any successful event”

– Kumar, F&B and Banquet Captain

Kumar is the F&B and Banquet Captain of Banquet Operations in the Club and is responsible
for coordinating everything from guest relations to the planning of events.
Despite his busy schedule, Kumar made time to share more about his job responsibilities as an
F&B and Banquet Captain.
On How Teamwork Is Key to Successful Events
“Our daily job responsibilities involve a lot of planning and constant coordination with external and internal
stakeholders, including colleagues and guests, for events ranging from weddings to seminars. The process involves
getting the orders from our Sales department and then as a team, we will work out the details, such as the setup,
planning and confirmation of food menu and number of attendees according to the Event Order. To me, teamwork
is the key to hold any successful event and this is why we are able to deliver even when the odds are against us, such
as last-minute changes and orders.”
On Pre-Covid vs Current Situation
“We used to support other events, such as golf tournaments in pre-covid times. On the other hand, the current
situation is very different as only smaller scale events could be held. There are also fewer weddings being held in
recent months as well as there is the reduction in number of people allowed in each event.”
On Maintaining a Positive Outlook
“I am constantly thinking about new ideas and being productive, that is, from how I can make the events even
better to how my team can be more efficient. This is why I hold frequent informal discussions on topics that focus
on improvement.
Lastly, it is important to be happy and enjoy your job. Seeing events, whether on a large or small scale, being held
successfully gives me great satisfaction and I know that all the sacrifices made are worthwhile. “
