// MESSAGE //
Dear Fellow Members and Friends,
Since the Club’s reopening in Phase 2 on 19 June 2020, we have been on our toes all the time to adjust and adapt to the new normal brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Given the ever-changing situation, the Club will continue keeping abreast of the latest developments and adjust our control measures accordingly.
SAFE MANAGEMENT MEASURES IN PHASE 2
Stringent safety measures continue to be in place at the Club to provide a safe environment for all our members, guests and staff. Everyone entering the Club has to register his or her entry by scanning the SafeEntry QR code and wear a mask at all times, except when he or she is doing strenuous exercises. Social distancing should be observed at all times and no one should gather in groups of more than 5 persons. Safe distancing markers have been put up at all counters to ensure that everyone keeps a minimum of 1 metre away from each other while queuing, while alternate seats at all changing rooms and resting areas have been marked out as seats not to be occupied.
With the reopening of the Golf Changing Rooms on 1 Jul 2020 (Wed), a strict capacity limit of 35 persons for Male Changing Room and 25 persons for Female Changing Room has been imposed to prevent overcrowding. Golfers are strongly encouraged to shower at home to minimise close contact with others and to refrain from congregating before and after golf games.
Contactless hand sanitiser dispensers have been installed inside and outside the Golf Changing Rooms and in the lifts around the Club so that all visitors can have access to hand sanitisers without having to come into contact with common touchpoints like door handles and lift buttons. To avoid the risk of transmission due to shared usage,
the Club has disallowed the use of massage chairs in the Golf Changing Rooms. Common amenities like toiletries, combs, tissue paper and hair dryers have also been removed from all the vanity tables.
In view of the need to tighten social distancing measures, and in a bid to minimise exposure and reduce the risk of local transmission, all Club golf competitions and events have been put on hold since the Club’s reopening on 19 June. We will update all of you again as soon as we can confirm if we are going ahead with any of our annual events for the rest of this calendar year. We thank everyone for their patience and understanding as we endeavour to abide by the government’s safety guidelines and keep the Club environment safe for all members.
Social & Recreational activities will continue to be offered online so that members can participate from the safety and comfort of their own homes.
You may have noticed our appointed Safe Distancing Ambassadors patrolling the Club premises and making sure that all members and guests comply strictly with the safety measures at all times, such as having their masks on, not congregating, and maintaining safe distancing. We do understand that not everyone is happy with these measures as they pose an inconvenience to all and hinder the enjoyment of our activities and use of the Club facilities. However, we would like to reiterate the importance of these safety measures and being socially responsible. These inconveniences are just a small price to pay for the health and well-being of all. SLA Officers perform ad hoc checks on the Club regularly to see if we are adhering to the Safe Management Measures. Should there be cases of non-compliance, serious actions maybetakenagainsttheClub, includingclosureof the Club. Let’s fully cooperate with one another so that we can all continue to enjoy golf and other Club activities during this trying period.
FROM THE CAPTAIN
2
ONLINE GOLF BOOKING FORM
To discourage golfers from congregating at the Golf reception and bag drop area to book tee times, the Club has shifted bookings of weekday tee times online from 27 Jul 2020 (Mon) onwards. This means that all tee time bookings will now be done online via a Google form. Links to the forms will be sent to all members in advance via our Electronic Direct Mail (EDM) and uploaded to the OCC website and Facebook page as well. In the meantime, requests for tee time bookings via phone calls, emails, and over the counter will cease. This arrangement will be in place until further notice to limit close interaction among golfers.
We understand members’ eagerness to play on the golf course, and I assure you that all bookings received by the Golf department are time-stamped. Hence, all tee times are strictly allocated on a first received, first served basis. The Club is constantly listening to members’ feedback, and we will continue to monitor and review the current booking form system employed to ensure all members have a fair chance to play.
EXTENSION OF SPENDING TIME FRAME FOR $50 CLUB REBATES GIVEN TO ALL PRINCIPAL MEMBERS
We are pleased to share that the spending period for the $50 rebates ($10 for F&B dining (excluding Subway), and $40 for Golf and S&R activities), which are given to all principal members holding full memberships, has been further extended to 4.5 months. Your spending for the three categories (F&B dining, Golf and S&R activities) needs to be charged to your membership account any time within the period from 19 June to 31 October 2020 in order for you to enjoy the rebates. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all of your kind understanding and support all this while.
DEFERMENT OF GOLF COURSE UPGRADING
In light of the overwhelming demand for golfing tee times by members since the Club reopened, the OCC golf course upgrading project, which was previously deferred to August 2020, has been further deferred to December 2020. We will provide further updates on the upgrading plans at a later date.
CARING FOR OUR GOLF COURSES
Since the Club reopened, we have seen many incidents of golfers being irresponsible and not
taking care of the golf courses. We would like to urge all golfers to practise good golf etiquette by taking the initiative to repair divots and ball marks, sticking to the cart paths when buggies are restricted due to the rain, and to avoid driving buggies over wet grass or beyond the ropes up to the greens. Recently, a member was caught driving his buggy beyond the ropes to the greens at Vanda Hole 5 and parking it there. Disciplinary action has been taken against him.
We have also seen other cases of violation of the Club and Golf rules. Three students at the Driving Range went onto the grass area below to hit their balls after their lesson with one of the Club’s golf professionals. This was clearly a violation of the Golf Bye-laws.
Turn to pages 10 & 11 for more information on these two disciplinary cases and what you should and should not do on the golf courses. We should all play our part to foster a culture of ownership and responsibility so that golfing at OCC will be a more pleasurable experience for everyone.
UPCOMING EVENTS
25 Oct 2020 (Sun) and 22 Nov 2020 (Sun) have been set aside for the traditional OCC President’s Cup 2020 and 25th Secretary-General’s Cup 2020 respectively. However, as the upcoming months are still characterised by uncertainty, these events are subject to cancellation. We will keep everyone updated of any changes.
In closing, I would like to wish everyone a Happy Mid-Autumn Festival. Celebrate this timeless ritual of family bonding, and enjoy mooncakes and tea with your family. Just make sure it’s a gathering of no more than 5 persons when you are outside your home, for what’s a good celebration without safety? Stay safe and healthy, and see you at the Club soon!
Warmest regards,
Yeo Khee Leng
Captain

Golf Etiquette
Caring for Our Golf Courses
The Club has seen many recent incidents of golfers being irresponsible and not taking care of the golf courses. We would like to urge all golfers to practise good golf etiquette and do their part in helping to keep our golf courses in pristine condition. Golfers who are caught disobeying the following guidelines will be called to attend a hearing with the Disciplinary Committee (DC) and have disciplinary action taken against them.
Let’s all play our part in fostering a culture of ownership and responsibility, making golfing at OCC more enjoyable for everyone!
Repair Divots and Ball Marks
Please bring along your sand bottles to repair any divots on the fairways, even if the divots were not left behind by you. If divots are repaired immediately, there is a high chance the grass will survive.
Divots on fairway
Likewise, ball marks on the greens also have to be repaired. If not, the grass in the depression will die, leaving not just a scar but also a pit in the putting surface. Repairing ball marks restores a smooth surface for putting.

Be careful when driving over wet grass
When the grass is wet, please drive carefully and do not jam on the brakes of your buggy as this will cause unsightly tyre marks on the golf course. Such indentations will also potentially damage the golf courses.

Violation of Club & Golf Rules
The Management will not hesitate to take action against any golfer who does not strictly comply with the Club and Golf rules. In such cases, golfers will be taken to task, and penalties meted out by the DC. The Club also views dangerous play on the golf course very seriously. Any unintentional dangerous play is also subject to disciplinary action taken against the golfer.
Recently, we saw some cases of violation of the Club and Golf rules and would like to highlight the following two cases so that they will not be repeated.
CASE 1
Recently, an OCC member was caught driving his buggy right up to the green at Vanda Hole 5 and parking it there. The case was subsequently brought up to the DC and disciplinary action was meted out to the culprit.
We would like to remind all golfers that the green and collar areas are OUT OF BOUNDS to buggies and you should not drive beyond the lines or ropes. Golfers are also reminded that they should not enter the fairways by driving through the tee boxes as doing so can cause damage to the turf around the tee boxes.
Ropes fronting green and collar areas No parking next to or on the green
CASE 2
Three students had lessons with one of the Club’s golf professionals, and they moved over to the members’ bays after their lesson to continue hitting balls. They then walked away from the hitting pads at the Driving Range and went onto the grass area below to hit their balls, which is clearly a violation of the Golf bye-laws. A warning has been issued to the culprits and their case is pending disciplinary action.
Hitting balls on the grass area at the Driving Range is strictly not allowed.

ImprovingYour Chipping
Most golfers who are chipping tend to struggle with getting the ball up in the air and catching it heavy. One of the reasons for this is an excessive forward shaft lean at the address and impact position. With too much of a forward shaft lean, the leading edge of the wedge gets buried into the ground, causing a fat and heavy shot. By using the bounce of the wedge, unwanted chunky shots can be eliminated.
Excessive forward shaft lean at address and impact position is one of the biggest causes for heavy chips. The leading edge is almost like a blade, causing the club to dig into the ground.
TIP 1 – BOUNCE IS YOUR FRIEND. USE IT!
Open the club face slightly and set the shaft in a more neutral position. This will lift the leading edge of the wedge slightly above the surface, allowing the bounce of the wedge to rest on the ground. The bounce is the angle between the back edge of the club and the leading edge. The whole purpose of the bounce is to prevent the club from digging into the ground.
Open the club face Leading edge is slightly slightly at address. above the ground, allowing the bounce of the wedge to
rest on the surface.
Shaft in a more neutral position, with the butt of the club pointing slightly towards the left side of the belt buckle.

// GOLF //
TIP 2 – GRIP DOWN AND STAND CLOSER
The further away you are from the ball, the flatter the swing arc. This causes the club face to rotate more in the swing. At setup, grip down on the club and stand closer to the ball as compared to what you would do in your full swing. This will help you manage your shots better by minimising club face rotation and encouraging a more upright backswing with a steeper angle of attack.
Standing too far from the ball will lead to a flatter swing arc, causing more club face rotation in the swing. This setup would be good if you are doing a full swing instead of a chip shot.
Stand closer to the ball and have the shaft in a more upright position. This will help your club stay on plane and minimise any form of club face rotation.
TIP 3 – TOO ‘WRISTY’, TOO RISKY
More often than not, you will see golfers hitting chip shots by moving just their wrist and restricting any form of body movement. This could result in an inconsistent swing and ball strike. By reducing excessive wrist hinge and allowing for more upper and lower body movement, you will be able to achieve a more consistent swing while minimising club face rotation.
Excessive wrist hinge in the swing – observe how the chest and pelvis are facing the ground during the backswing and the follow-through.
At the top of the backswing, we see a lot more upper body rotation.
At post-impact position, we can see the hips and chest clearing and facing the target.

Matcha Red Bean Snowskin Mooncake Recipe
Makes 6 small mooncakes
Ingredients
Kao fen (fried/cooked glutinous rice flour) Icing Sugar
Matcha Powder Sunflower Oil
Preparation
Mooncake Skin
- 62g
- 30g - 7g - 23g
Water
Ready-made Red Bean Paste Seeds/nuts
Tools
Mooncake mould (50g mould)
- 91g
- 25g
- Optional
1. Add kao fen, icing sugar, and matcha powder together and sift five times to get a smooth flour mixture. Leave the flour mixture in a large bowl.
2. Add sunflower oil and rub it into the flour mixture until the texture becomes coarse and sandy.
3. Add water and knead the mixture using your hands until the dough becomes soft and pliable. Do not over-knead the dough or the oil will start to seep out.
Filling Paste
1. For a 50g mooncake mould, weigh out 25g of red bean paste. If desired, add seeds/nuts to the paste (ensure that the total weight of the filling paste is still 25g).
2. Shape each portion of the filling paste into a ball.
Snowskin Mooncake
1. Weigh out 25g of the kneaded dough for the mooncake skin.
2. Flatten each portion of dough with your palm and roll it out until you get a thin circle. Wrap
the mooncake skin around one ball of filling paste and shape it into a ball.
3. Place the mooncake ball into the mould and press firmly. Invert the mould and knock it
lightly and carefully to push the mooncake out onto a flat surface.
4. Store the mooncakes in an airtight container and chill them in the fridge before serving.
The mooncakes will last about 5 days in the fridge.

5 LOWER BACK-FRIENDLY DRILLS
These five core strengthening exercises are generally recommended alternatives to exercises that involve twisting and crunching (e.g. Russian Twists and Sit-Ups) if you have niggling issues with your back. As these drills help to keep your back in a neutral position, they are relatively safe and will not aggravate your lower back when performed correctly. Try them out for 2 to 3 sets in a slow and controlled manner.
1. BIRD DOG
• Keep hips level & do not rotate your pelvis • Keep spine neutral & brace your core
2. DEAD BUG
• Hold for 3-5 secs (at isometric phase) • 10 – 12 reps per side
• Lie on your back and bend hips & knees to a 90-degree angle
• Brace your core throughout the movement
• Refrain from arching your lower back off the floor
• 8 – 10 reps per side
22
// LIFESTYLE //
3. PLANK HOLD
4. SIDE PLANK HOLD
• Braceyourcorethroughoutisometrichold
• Refrainfromhiphikingorarchingyour
lower back
• 30–45secs
5. SUPINE MARCHING
• Brace your core throughout isometric hold • 30 – 45 secs per side
• Lie on your back and lift your knees off the ground
• Stretch one leg out at a time and hold the elevated position for a few seconds
• To increase difficulty level, stretch your foot further out
• Brace your core throughout the movement
• Refrain from arching your lower back off the floor
• 10 – 12 reps per side
Disclaimer: Please ensure that you do not have any injuries and are cleared by your physician for these exercises. If you have serious back conditions, you should seek medical advice from a professional who can provide individual guidance based on your specific condition.

Wonderful Event Planning
Hi Thomas,
I held my daughter’s baby shower at OCC Emerald suite on Sunday, 2 Feb 2020.
Special thanks to Sheena who helped us in the planning, and the Banquet team, Kumar and Swee Kee, who were very attentive to our needs to ensure that the event went smoothly.
Food was great and my guests enjoyed themselves. Would recommend this venue to my friends. Thanks again for the wonderful assistance from your team and hope you can recognise them for their excellent service! :)
Regards,
Cheryl

Professional Event Services
Dear Ms. Sheena and Mr. Thomas,
Greetings to everyone and hope both of you and your families are doing very well!
I’ve been wanting to send this note earlier and am finally able to get it done this time as I just came back from my vacation.
On behalf of my entire family, I would really like to thank Orchid Country Club for being part of this most wonderful and most memorable event we ever had. It was truly a very successful evening with great food, music and happy people. In fact, till now, we are still receiving feedback and appreciation from our guests, both from Singapore and those who travelled from overseas to attend the event, on how they truly enjoyed the party!
Of course, this wouldn’t have been possible without the careful and professional service that your staff had rendered during the event. They made us feel at home. Kudos to your staff under the excellent leadership of
Mr. Lawrence and his Team! They were truly awesome!
Likewise, the delicate and detailed preparation leading to the event was a key to the big success as well. I would also like to extend our appreciation to
Ms. Sheena. We can’t thank her enough for her guidance and customer service, which was outstanding!
Lastly, the venue and food made that final touch. Please extend our appreciation to the people in the kitchen too (chefs, servers and others).
Thank you very much! Cheers!
Steve
