General Manager’s Dear Members, Greetings from Orchid Country Club! Happy May Day! May Day in Singapore is marked by honouring the hard work by all our workers. I would like to especially thank our dedicated and hardworking OCC staff who work tirelessly round the clock to ensure that the Club runs smoothly for members’ enjoyment. I hope that you will extend this appreciation to them when you are in the club. Your “Thank You” and bright smile will go a long way in making their day in the current challenging operating environment. Over the past 2 years, there has been significant improvements at OCC and I would like to share some of them. Over a period of 20 months from Dec 2020, we upgraded our golf course so that our golf courses can continue to be in pristine condition till the end of the OCC’s land lease. Tif-Eagle grass with positive attributes such as good green speed and consistency in overall playability were brought in to replace the old turf. New elements were also incorporated into the design and contour of the course to bring about a more enriching golfing experience at OCC. As you have read from our weekly EDM and I am proud to share that OCC’s Aranda and Dendro courses have been nominated as Singapore’s Best Golf Course in the World Golf Awards 2023. Voting has started since 1 April 2023 and will close on 1 September 2023. We will appreciate your strong support by casting your votes. Turn to page 16 on how to cast your vote now! Another milestone was the deployment of a new fleet of golf buggies at the beginning of the year. These buggies offered new features such as LED lights, overhead storage compartments, USB port and GPS with geo-fencing capabilities. Members are able to take full advantage of the GPS functionality to elevate your golfing experience in OCC! The new online golf booking system – iGolf, was also recently launched. This marks a major step to improve the golf booking process. Members will be able to make bookings for the whole week and no longer need to register at the Golf Counter. You can collect your buggies and proceed to your respective tee boxes upon arrival. We wish to offer our sincere apologies for the system failure that occurred during the first launch on 1st May and the team worked tirelessly to get it rectified quickly and it was re-launched on 4 May 2023. Some members have continued to provide positive feedback on the new system, which we are taking seriously. We thank members for your kind understanding while we work out the minor issues with the developers. For more information on how to use the booking system, please refer to pages 14-13. Other than improvements to our golfing side, OCC has partnered with BSFIT Wellness & CO Pte. Ltd. to revitalise and manage the gym. Half of the gym has been converted into a studio, to allow the conducting of high intensity interval training (HIIT) classes. These classes have been proven to be popular and BSFIT recently introduced a new Muay Thai class. The other half remained as a gym and underwent a minor overhaul with some of the older gym equipment being replaced with newer ones. With the introduction of facial recognition technology, members can now access the gym 7/24 for free, at your own convenience. I am also especially thrilled to share an update from Orchid Golf & Resort Hotel. We will be introducing Premium Deluxe rooms that boasts a rain shower, a large TV, luxury satin sheets and a complimentary minibar. Renovations will begin in June and is slated to complete by July so stay tuned for that! We have also embarked on smart room trials with features such as motion sensor lights and curtains as well as voice prompt assistance (Google speaker and screen). Taking great pride in Saving Gaia, we will be phasing out plastic bottles in our rooms. Boasting spacious rooms and balconies with magnificent views that overlook our golf course, Orchid Golf & Resort Hotel is a rarity in Singapore where space is a luxury and at attractive rates for our valued members and guests. Operational costs have been increasing over the years, in particular during the COVID19- pandemic. Despite the rising expenses, as shared above, OCC have upgraded our golf courses, new buggies and upgrading of the Club infrastructure to ensure members have a positive and enjoyable experience. OCC strived to hold off any fee increment for as long as possible, unfortunately, fee revision has become necessary as we are unable to fully absorb the impact of ever-rising costs. Even with the revision in OCC’s fees from 1 Apr 2023, OCC continues to have one of the lowest fees for Clubs in Singapore. This is in-line with our objective to make golfing affordable and accessible to all. Moving on to events, I am heartened for Members’ support in Club events such as, the recently concluded Captain and Lady Captain’s Cup. The strong camaraderie and friendly competition amongst golfers were definitely the highlights of the day. For a glimpse of the event, please turn to pages 12-11 for the highlights. I am definitely looking forward to the next Club event, the 26th Secretary-General’s Cup on 16 July 2023 and your continuous support. As for the social side, members will be able bowl for free on Member Bowling Nights, every Monday. If you prefer tennis over bowling, you can choose to join Tennis Social Nights every Friday and get to know other members with the same interest. You may refer to pages 31 and 32 for more information. As part of the Labour Movement in Singapore, I would like to end this message with a salute to the hard work and dedication of all OCC staff and thank you, OCC members, for your kind support to them. Yummy local and Vietnamese snacks were strategically placed on the golf course for golfers to top-up their energy during their game. After an enjoyable time on the course, golfers tucked in to scrumptious buffet dinner at Sapphire Suite with live music entertainment, prize presentation and lucky draw.
