// MESSAGE //
Dear Members,
Happy 2021!
After a very tough and challenging year learning to live with the new normal brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, we are finally turning the page and starting fresh with new beginnings and hopes for infinite possibilities in 2021. With COVID-19 paving the way for a paradigm shift towards digitalisation, there is no better time to start our digital transformation than now. As the change in reading habits accelerates, I am pleased to share that we have gone digital- only with our Club magazines starting from this issue. The magazines will be uploaded to the OCC website in a flipbook format so you will be able to access them from any of your digital devices easily and flip through the pages just like you would with a print edition! I hope that you will enjoy this new reading experience as much as I do.
New Driving Range Tee-Up System
In our efforts to embrace digitalisation, I am delighted to announce that the Club is embarking on an upgrading project for a new Driving Range tee-up system with improved performance and
FROM THE PRESIDENT
convenience. Bays supporting the new system will gradually open and we will be phasing out the existing SMART Range Cards over a 12-month transition period from 4 January to 31 December 2021. The old cards will be replaced by RFID- enabled cards that can be topped up at kiosks located on both levels of the Driving Range. Members can also look forward to charging directly to their membership account using their membership card. Range cardholders can choose to utilise the remaining value in their old cards at selected bays, or purchase a new Range Card over the counter and do a balance transfer. [Read more about the new system and some frequently asked questions on pages 12 & 13.]
Vanda Course Upgrading Progress
The Club is one month into the upgrading of Vanda course, and I am pleased to share that it is well underway and progressing on schedule. Vanda Holes 4, 5 and 9 have been reshaped and well-turfed with TifEagle grass, and the sprinkler heads have been realigned for a better irrigation and drainage system. With all these changes, members can look forward to consistent putting surfaces when the upgraded

greens reopen. Regular updates on the progress of the golf course renovation will continue to be communicated in a timely manner to members. [Flip to page 11 for more details.]
Online Golf Booking System
I would like to thank members for all the feedback on the current golf booking system. Your valuable inputs allow us to constantly review, change and improve our system. The Club is stepping up efforts to implement an online booking system to alleviate members’ booking woes. NTUC’s IT Department and OCC Management have narrowed down the service provider candidates to four reputable vendors with track records in the golf and club industry. We aim to go into the testing phase in the first quarter of 2021. Members will be kept updated on the implementation of the online booking system in due course, and in the meantime, I seek your kind patience.
Safe and Gradual Resumption of Events
As the events industry bounces back with the easing of restrictions, we are gradually resuming events held at the Club, such as weddings, seminars, trainings, and meetings. Union events have also been making a strong comeback, with a total of more than 500 attendees turning up for 24 Labour Movement events since the lifting of certain restrictions. Much as we are excited to inject life back into the Club, our staff are definitely taking extra care to ensure that all event participants strictly comply with the stringent set of safe management measures put in place.
Despite the number of Covid-19 cases in the community remaining low, we want to stress that safety is still the top priority at the Club, and would like to remind everyone not to be complacent. To keep the Club environment a safe one for not only our members and guests but also our staff, safe management measures such as putting on a mask, observing safe distancing, and avoiding congregating in groups of more than eight should still be strictly adhered to. Large-scale Club golf competitions and post- event dinners with prize giving ceremonies will continue to be suspended to limit close contact and reduce the risk of local transmission. This
includes the annual Hong Bao Golf and Hong Bao Dinner 2021. We will keep members posted if there are any changes to be made in line with the authorities’ guidelines.
Chinese New Year 2021 Red Packets
To share the festive joy with our members, the highlight of our past Jan-Feb issues used to be the Chinese New Year red packets that were enclosed with the magazine. This year, as part of the big NTUC Club family, we will be distributing red packets with the same design as NTUC Club. Though we have gone digital-only for our Club magazines, we will be mailing the red packets to you. So keep a look out for them!
On behalf of the management and staff at OCC, I would like to convey my most sincere gratitude to members for their generosity and support towards the 2021 “Ang Pow” Fund contribution. Your contribution is the greatest form of appreciation for the extra hard work that our staff have put in over the past year, a year which was filled with unprecedented challenges. Thank you for making this festive season an even more joyous and meaningful one!
As we usher in the Chinese New Year, I would like to wish everyone good health, happiness and prosperity. This holiday season is probably unlike any other, as we start the new year still very much filled with uncertainties. May you and your loved ones find peace amid the difficulties and enjoy a better year ahead!
Warmest regards,
Chong Kee Hiong
President

Do Not Make Illegal RightTurns
Recently, the Club has observed an alarming increase in the number of motorists driving against the traffic flow and making illegal right turns to exit from the Club. Not only does this pose a threat to the safety of other motorists and pedestrians at the Club, it is also a clear violation of road traffic rules.
Driver making an illegal right turn to exit
Make a left turn and drive around the roundabout before exiting the Golf Clubhouse
The Club is paying close attention to this, and there are security cameras around to act as a deterrence against irresponsible driving and catch anyone making an illegal turn. We will not hesitate to take further action against motorists caught committing such traffic offences.
Everyone has a part to play in practising safe driving. Thank you for your kind cooperation in complying with road traffic rules and making OCC a safe place for all!

ADHERING TO CLUB RULES AND ACTING WITH DECORUM AT THE CLUB
Recently, there was a case of a member who parked his car at the Committee parking lot before heading off to play golf. When contacted by the Club staff to park his car elsewhere immediately so that a penalty will not be imposed, the member told the staff that he would settle the matter after his game. The Security staff had to wheel-clamp the member’s car due to unauthorised parking at the reserved lots. The member subsequently called the Police when he found his car being wheel-clamped and that he was being charged $100 for release of the wheel clamp. However, as ‘no parking’ signs were properly put up and the rules clearly stated in the Club's Bye-Laws, the Police had no reason to take action against the Club.
According to Article 9.5 in the Social Bye-Laws, “Cars parked in reserved lots, unauthorised areas or in any manner contrary to these Bye-Laws shall
be clamped or towed away at the owner’s expense and the owner may in addition be subjected to disciplinary actions.” The owner shall have to pay a fee for release of the wheel clamp.
We would like to remind all members to only park at authorised areas or be subject to a penalty fee for the release of the wheel clamp. We also wish to highlight to members that a warning letter may be issued to anyone who does not act with decorum or infringes Club rules. Thank you for your kind understanding and cooperation.

vANDA COURSE UPGRADING PROGRESS
The first phase of the golf course upgrading project at the Vanda Course is well underway and progressing on schedule. We are pleased to share that the TifEagle grass is the choice of turf that we are using for our upgraded greens. With this turf, members can look forward to having consistent putting surfaces all year round.
From Vanda Terrace, members may have noticed the unearthing of Vanda Hole 9 green and the excavation of Holes 4 and 5 greens in the past one month. Vanda Holes 4, 5 and 9 have now been reshaped and well-turfed. now reshaped and well-turfed.
A premium green also requires a better irrigation and drainage system. With the realignment of some sprinkler heads, this can help to ensure more efficient use of water and electricity for irrigation – something that is important for golf courses. Not only does this improve the allocation of resources, it is also effective in water and electricity conservation.
During the upgrading period, we seek your understanding that there will be times when tipper trucks will be seen transporting earth out of the course. We have been working very closely with the contractor to minimise inconveniences as much as possible for our members. Periodic updates on the upgrading progress will also be provided to keep members abreast of the project.
Thank you for your understanding and support.

NEW DRIvING RANGE TEE-UP SYSTEM
The Club’s upgrading project for a new Driving Range tee-up system with improved performance and convenience is currently underway, and we will gradually phase out all existing SMART Range Cards over a 12-month transition period from 4 January to 31 December 2021. With the upgrade, current cards will be replaced by RFID-enabled cards and bay panels will be replaced by touchscreen tablets with RFID card readers attached to them. Moving forward, OCC members will also be able to charge directly to their membership accounts using their OCC RFID-enabled membership cards when playing at the Driving Range.
FAQs
1. Will I still be able to use my old Driving Range card?
Old Driving Range cards can still be used during the transition period. The new system will run alongside the old system until it has been installed at all the bays over a period of 12 months.
2. What will happen to my old Range Card once
the new system has been installed at all the bays?
Range cardholders can choose to utilise the remaining value in their old Range Cards within the next 12 months, or purchase a new Range Card at $5 plus GST over the counter and do a balance transfer. OCC members will enjoy a 50% discount when they purchase their first new range card, at $2.50 plus GST.
After purchase, simply present your old Range Card to our Driving Range staff and they will verify the card balance before transferring the balance to the new Range Card at a cap of $300 per card. Transfer of balances from the old cards to the new cards must be done within the 12-month transition period, i.e. by 31 December 2021. Cardholders are reminded to replace their existing Range Cards with the new RFID-enabled Range Cards within the 12-month transition period.
3. Can I obtain a cash refund for my old Range Card?
Cash refund of any unused value stored in the existing range cards is strictly not allowed.
4. I am an OCC member. Can I transfer the balance in my old Range Card to
my membership account?
No, transfer of balance in the old Range Card to a membership account is strictly not allowed as it is equivalent to a cash refund.
12

// GOLF //
5. Do I need to purchase a new Range Card to use
the new tee-up system? OCC Members can opt to use their own membership cards to access the new system or purchase a new Range Card. Non-members will need to purchase a new RFID-enabled Visitor Range Card over the Range Counter.
6. Can I top up more than $300 in one new Range Card?
No, the amount you can top up for the new Range Card is capped at $300, which is also the maximum stored value in the new Range Card at any point in time. This cap is the same for the existing SMART Range Cards.
7. When will my new Range Card expire?
The new Range Card will expire in three (3) years’ time from the date of your last transaction, i.e. top-up or utilisation, whichever is later. There will not be any refund of any value in your Card once it expires. Cardholders may check the expiry date of their Card at the Driving Range Counter.
8. Is the new system easy to use?
Just follow the 3 easy steps below and you are good to go! 1. Tap your card.
2. Select the number of balls.
3. Start playing!
A step-by-step guide on how to use the system will be displayed at the Driving Range. For assistance, please approach any staff member at the Driving Range Counter.
9. Can I pass my OCC RFID membership card to my friends and family members so that they can enjoy Member’s rates and play at Member’s bays?
No. All membership cards are strictly non-transferable.
10. What do I do if I lose my new Range Card?
Loss of Driving Range cards must be reported immediately to the staff at the Driving Range Counter personally or by calling 6750 2198. For loss of OCC membership cards, please contact the Membership department at 6750 2180/123. The Club will proceed to block the use of reported lost cards after verification. Please note that the replacement of lost cards is chargeable.
Terms and conditions for the new RFID-enabled Range Cards can be found on

For enquiries, please call Driving Range at 6750 2198.

Golf Etiquette
Every day, breaches of golf etiquette, such as dangerous play, not filling or replacing divots, not repairing ball marks on the greens, and improper use of buggies are observed on the golf courses. Golfers who are caught breaching golf etiquette will be issued a Club advisory as a warning. Repeat offenders will have further disciplinary action taken against them by the Club.
Please take note of the following golf etiquette rules when playing on the golf courses at the Club. Golfers’ playing experience can be enhanced if everyone is more mindful of golf etiquette and adheres to the guidelines.
Avoiding Slow Play
Slow play is a serious issue that plagues many of our members and ruins golf games. A typical round of 18 holes takes about 4 hours 30 minutes. Here are some tips on how to keep to the pace of play.
1. Arrive at the club earlier
Showing up late at the tee box can put the entire time sheet on the brink of delay. Arrive 15 minutes before your tee time and be ready to tee off on time.
2. Play from the correct tee box
Play from the set of tee boxes according to your handicap. Only male golfers with a handicap index of 18.0 and below are allowed to tee off from the Blue tee boxes.
In the event that one of the male golfers within the flight has a handicap index above 18.0, they must all tee off from the White tee boxes.
3. Minimise your time on the tee boxes
It is acceptable for players to ‘hit when ready’. You can also save time by playing a provisional ball (Rule 27-2) if you think that your original ball might be lost or out of bounds.
4. Plan ahead
Once you are off the tee, think ahead. Determine the yardage and decide on your club selection before it is your turn to play. You can do this while the other players in your flight are playing. If buggies are restricted to the cart path only, please carry more than one club to your shot. Every small step saves time.
5. Pre-shot routine – Keep it short
Decide on your line of play and trust yourself. Try to take no more than one practice swing, set up to the ball, and then play your shot. Most importantly, be ready to hit when it is your turn. Start moving towards your buggy for your next shot.
6. Aim to play in 20 seconds
From club selection and pre-shot routine to execution, strive to hit your shot within 20 seconds when it is your turn to play. This will help to keep play moving at a brisk pace.
14

// GOLF //
7. Develop an eye for distance
If you need to determine precise distance, consider using a range finder or try to find a distance marker before you reach your ball.
8. Buddy system
Do not wait in the buggy while your flight mate hits and then drive to your ball. Get out and walk to your ball with a few clubs. Be ready to play when it is your turn and then let your flight mate pick you up. Alternatively, drive to your ball after you drop your flight mate off and then pick him or her up after you hit.
9. Be helpful to your flight mates
Look out for your flight mates’ shots, not just your own. If you already know the location of your shot, help the others look for their balls. Volunteer to fill a divot for another player if the need arises.
10. Keep up with the flight in front of you
Your correct position on the course is immediately behind the group in front of you. Arrive at your next shot just before the preceding group leaves the area in front of you. If you are consistently unable to keep up and a gap opens in front of you, please invite and allow the group behind you to play through, irrespective of the number of players in the group.
11. Be efficient on the putting green
Mark your ball, lift and clean it when you arrive at the putting green so that you will be ready to replace it when it is your turn to play. You can usually line up your putt while the others are putting, without disturbing them. Leave your clubs on the side of the putting green closest to the next tee and leave the green promptly after holing out. Wait until the next tee to record your score.
Preventing Dangerous Play
1. No golfer shall play their shot until the golfers in the front flight are out of range.
2. For blind holes, always make the extra effort to walk or drive the buggy ahead to ensure
that the flight in front is out of range.
3. If you or your flight mate to hit a wayward shot, you must shout “fore” immediately and
go up to the affected party to apologise.
4. Do not engage in a quarrel or a fight. Call for the Marshall, if required.

Replacing and Repairing Divots
Some golfers take more divots while others take less. No matter how many divots you take in a round, please try to replace them all. Even if the piece of grass that you replace ends up dying, the soil condition will still improve. This will allow the divot to fill in faster and help to restore a smooth playing surface. An unrepaired divot can take months to heal and may never fully recover. Sand bottles are available on the buggies and at certain tee boxes with refill stations.
REPLACE
When the divot is still intact with soil attached.
Place the divot back in the scar, then press with your foot to enhance rooting.
Repairing Ball Marks
FILL
When the divot is shattered with no soil attached.
Fill to ground level without overfilling. Press with your foot to compact and level mix.
A ball mark is a little depression on the green left by a golf ball when it lands from a tee shot or approach shot. Unrepaired ball marks can kill the grass and cause an uneven putting surface. Repairing a ball mark restores a smooth surface and helps keep the grass green and healthy. It will also mean smoother putts for the golfers and lower possibility for a well-hit shot to be knocked off-line by a ball mark.
CHOOSE WISELY
A ball mark repair tool is recommended, but other pointed devices can be used.
PUSH DON’T PRY
Starting from the back and sides, gently push & stretch the turf to the center of the mark.
WORK AROUND
Work around
the ball mark until it’s filled in. Avoid lifting & twisting the turf harshly.
FINAL TOUCH
Use your putter to lightly tap down the mark. Fix other marks in addition to yours.
Let us show consideration for one another by observing golf etiquette and adhering to golf rules when playing on the golf courses so that everyone can enjoy a more pleasurable golf game!

DIAL IN THE
The wedge shot is one of the most unique shots in a golf game. Some think of it as a ‘mini full swing’ while others, a ‘big chip’. Both shots have characteristics that are ideal and not so ideal for a wedge shot. Hopefully, with the help of the following tips, you will be able to blend both ideas into a reliable and accurate wedge action.
30-40 METRE WEDGE SHOT
Set-Up
Impact
The key thing to note here is to set up in a position where your eyes are able to see the front of the golf ball. This not only encourages you to start with your weight placed on your front foot but also gets your sternum (located close to where the golfer’s shirt buttons are) and head positioned on top of the ball. These are all crucial pointers to help you strike the ball cleanly.
Backswing
For a regular full swing shot, most golfers will form the red right angle with the lead arm and the shaft when the lead arm becomes parallel with the ground. This angle is formed by wrist set, a necessity to create club speed for a full shot. Instead, you can try swinging the club back with very little wrist set, making use of lower and upper body turn to swing to this position (blue angle). This keeps the lead wrist flat, which in turn helps you to deliver the club into the ball with less clubface and variability in club speed.
You can see here that the shaft angle has been returned to a position similar to that of the set- up. It is possible to do this from the less-than-90- degree-angle illustrated in the backswing. Being able to return the club to a shaft lean position that is similar to the set-up or slightly forward makes trajectory and distance control more predictable.
Turn-Through
It is very important that we turn through to the finish position, where our belt buckle, chest, and head all face the target. Many golfers try their hardest to keep their head down even after the ball is gone, which does not translate to a good turn-through. Try swinging back and through to this position with good rhythm and timing, counting ‘1000’ swinging back and ‘1000’ in your head swinging through. For all you know, you might find yourself admiring your next wedge shot!

DRILLS TO CORRECT SCAPULAR WINGING!
What is scapular winging? It is a condition that affects the shoulder blades. Most people with scapular winging have shoulder blades that stick out, resulting in discomfort when sitting or wearing a backpack. It also often affects the ability to raise your arm above your shoulder. Various causes of scapular winging include poor body posture, stiff shoulders and weak core muscles.
Try out these exercises to strengthen your scapular muscles and alleviate scapular winging.
1. SCAPULAR PUSH-UPS
• Get into a push-up position with knees on the floor
• Brace core muscles
• Fully extend arms and retract shoulder blades together
2. BAND PULL APARTS
• Hold the band at chest level with arms straight out in front of you
• Pullshouldersdownandback
• Stretch arms out to the sides as you pull the band apart
• Bring arms back to the starting position
• 15-20 Reps
• Hold each Rep for 3-5 seconds • 15-20 Reps
26

// LIFESTYLE //
3. FOREARM WALL SLIDE
• Keep forearms on the wall and slide them up and out
• Stretch extended arms backwards, squeezing shoulder
blades together
4. QUADRUPED SERRATUS WALKOUTS
• Return arms to the wall and slide arms down to the starting position
• 10-15 Reps
• Keep upper back rounded and ‘walk out’ as far as you can without letting your shoulders sink
• 10-15 Reps

Thank you for the support when we held our recent HR training workshop in OCC on 29 Sep 2020.
I would like to show appreciation, especially to Lawrence, who was assigned to manage our event. He was polite with a great service attitude and was prompt in handling our request. He even helped us cut our cake and distributed it for us.
Thank you for taking care of us. We thoroughly enjoyed our event held at OCC.

I definitely would give my 5-star recommendations to my friends to hold their wedding celebrations at OCC.
I wish you and the team a good year ahead!
