SIMPLE DRILLS TO REMEDY SOME
COMMON SWING FAULTS

“OVER-THE-TOP” SWING

Over-the-Top swing is basically starting the downswing incorrectly with upper body which causes the path of
the clubhead to be outside of the target line before impact. A simple drill that could help to prevent one from
“over-the-top” swing is what is known as a step drill.
This is a step-by-step guide to execute the drill:

1. Firstly, assume a 2. Move the front foot next to the back 3. Once the feet are together,
normal address position. foot before starting the backswing. initiate backswing sequence.

4. The front foot to step forward back to its original position just before the downswing starts and continue the
downswing as smoothly as possible.

The objective of this drill is to promote lower body movement which precedes the upper body, which forms the
basis of a good golf swing. Contributed by Daryl Lim & Simon Er, Golf Professionals at Golf Performance 360.

Newly Renovated Dendro Course

Dendro will be opening on 18 December 2021 for play after 6 months of upgrading.
Here is the brief Hole-by-Hole description.

Dendro Hole 1 Par 5 Blue Tee 503m White Tee 474m Red Tee 413m

The golfer is immediately introduced to the Dendro course from the first tee. The fairway stretches all the way to a slightly
elevated green. Beware of the bunkers along the left hand side of this hole. Most players will try to set up the 3rd shot to
a green that slopes from left to right.

NEW PREVIOUS

Dendro Hole 2 Par 4 Blue Tee 302m White Tee 290m Red Tee 269m

The 2nd hole is a slight dogleg left. A lone fairway bunker sits just at the turn of the fairway. A drive left of the bunker will
leave an approach to a green that slopes from front to back. Avoid the bunkers in the front, back and a drop at the back
of the green, as it makes recovery shots difficult from these areas.

NEW PREVIOUS

Dendro Hole 3 Par 5 Blue Tee 573m White Tee 447m Red Tee 419m

The longest and most demanding hole on this course. Golfers who go for the green in two could be rewarded with an
eagle or birdie but they also risk landing in the bunkers that flank the left side of the green. This is a tricky green where you
want to get your approach on the right level, so you can be aggressive on your approach putt.

// PROMOTION //

Dendro Hole 4 Par 3 Blue Tee 147m White Tee 128m Red Tee 111m

This hole is trickier than it looks. Beware of the huge bunkers guarding the front and left of the green. A well struck tee
shot can reach the large green which slopes from front to back.

NEW PREVIOUS

Dendro Hole 5 Par 4 Blue Tee 372m White Tee 341m Red Tee 301m

This is a medium length par 4 hole. Accuracy is important for the tee shot. Just before and at the dogleg, there are bunkers
which may trap your tee shot, making your second shot more challenging. The green is well guarded by bunkers, leaving
only a small strip into the green.

NEW PREVIOUS

Dendro Hole 6 Par 5 Blue Tee 425m White Tee 417m Red Tee 394m

The Lower Seletar Reservoir runs along the left of the fairway. With trouble on the left and right of the hole, it demands
accuracy to land the shots on the fairway. An adventurous tee shot may end up in the water hazard in the middle of the
hole after the 250-metre mark. Large and intimidating bunkers are in play immediately after the water hazard.

NEW PREVIOUS

10

// GOLF //

Dendro Hole 7 Par 4 Blue Tee 314m White Tee 303m Red Tee 274m

This is a relatively short par 4 hole with a tricky green. Playing from a slightly elevated tee, the landing zone on the fairway
is guarded by a bunker. From this point, the green may look like a vertical target with the bunkers on the left and right of
an open approach.

NEW PREVIOUS

Dendro Hole 8 Par 3 Blue Tee 170m White Tee 143m Red Tee 112m

This hole has an elevated green that is partially framed by the majestic pine trees on the right of the green. There is a large
bunker stretching across the right side of the green and awaits the slightest mis-hits.

NEW PREVIOUS

Dendro Hole 9 Par 4 Blue Tee 288m White Tee 269m Red Tee 248m

The finishing hole on Dendro is a straightforward hole. To reach the green, one must avoid a series of bunkers and factor
in the elevation change.

DISCIPLINARY COMMITTEE CASES

It is one of the central principles of the game of golf that players play by the rules of the Club and in
the spirit of the game. We would like to highlight two (2) recent cases that were deliberated by the
Disciplinary Committee (DC) and were brought up to the General Committee (GC) for approval to
suspend these Members.

CASE 1
Play was suspended due to lightning risk and the siren was activated.
An OCC Member was retrieving his ball on the Vanda 1 fairway when a ball nearly hit him. The golfer
who executed the shot was a fellow OCC Member who was playing two (2) flights behind. He had
intended to play the shot to secure his crossover, so that when play resumed, he could return to his last
point of play and continue his game.
The Disciplinary Committee concluded that the OCC Member had flouted the rule that every player had
to stop play when the siren is activated. The rule is to prevent players from getting injured by lightning
strikes. It is a signal to vacate the course and/or seek shelter as quickly as possible. Continuance of play
is dangerous as there are returning golfers and golfing staff still on the course trying to seek shelter.
The General Committee has decided, upon the DC’s recommendation, a suspension of one (1) month
for the OCC Member.
Golfers are reminded of the Club Golf Bye-Laws, Golf General Rules, Article 11. Closure of Golf Course,
Section 11.2, “All players shall discontinue play when the suspension siren is sounded. Play shall resume
only after the resumption siren is sounded.”

CASE 2
This next incident took place on Vanda hole 9. A Member and his flight mates were waiting on the
fairway to take their second shot when a ball landed in front of them. There was no shout of warning
from the back flight. The Member who executed the shot went forward to apologize to the flight on
the fairway. He explained that he did not expect that his drive would go further than he had intended
for it to.
The General Committee decided, upon the Disciplinary Committee’s recommendation, that the golfer
had failed to exercise due care by not ensuring that the front flight was out of range before he executed
his shot. This tantamount to dangerous play. The golfer was suspended for a period of three (3) months.

Safety Tips from The R&A:
• Players should ensure that no one is standing close by or in a position to be hit by the club, the

ball or any stones, pebbles, twigs or the like when they make a stroke or practice swing.
• Wait until the players in front are out of range. Players should always alert greenstaff nearby or

ahead when they are about to make a stroke that might endanger them.
• If your ball is heading in a direction where there is a danger of it hitting someone, shout a

warning immediately. The traditional word of warning is “fore!”.
