Description In AP U.S. History, students investigate significant events, individuals, developments, and processes in nine
historical periods from approximately 1491 to the present. Students develop and use the same skills and methods
employed by historians: analyzing primary and secondary sources; developing historical arguments; making
historical connections; and utilizing reasoning about comparison, causation, and continuity and change. The course
also provides eight themes that students explore throughout the course in order to make connections among
historical developments in different times and places: American and national identity; work, exchange, and
technology; geography and the environment; migration and settlement; politics and power; America in the world;
American and regional culture; and social structures.

Description The Great Trials of History is a project-based curriculum that examines dramatic courtroom cases. These trials,
however, were more than just drama. In some cases, such as the case of Socrates, they underscored important
ethical issues which transcend time and place. Other trials covered in this curriculum reflect periods of crisis in
history. In some instances, they foreshadowed what was to come. One example is that of John Brown. In this
curriculum we have used a project-based methodology. In keeping with the Grant Wiggins maxim, “Two of our
most important goals as educators and curriculum writers are to develop important transferable skills and to foster
students’ autonomy.” To that end, we have suggested that teachers use a variety of project designs that will
achieve noteworthy objectives.

Description The Artistically Talented Curriculum 1 is the introductory course for gifted artists entering a four year portfolio
development program. Through a rigorous “boot camp” like process, students learn the elements and principles of
design by developing specific technical, compositional and conceptual skills. A focus on aesthetics, art criticism,
and art history directed through drawing, production and design skills is the foundation for progressive
development. Students complete a series of advanced portfolio pieces covering an extensive range of concepts
and processes. Students routinely engage in both individual and group critique to develop assessment skills and
build a knowledge base of the descriptive analysis method. A culminating exhibition at the end of the school year
showcasing the entire visual arts component affords ninth graders the opportunity to debut as serious art students
within the community. This course fulfills the state requirement in visual arts for graduation.
