A Message from the
Principal

Dear Readers!
Welcome to a new issue of UCSI SH Magazine. We hope you will
enjoy this publication and support our students for further
exciting learning activities.

We have started semester 2 with many different activities to
promote and support personal hygiene and proper health care
among our students. Ms Lia Koh, a school nurse, has conducted
special talks with some hand-on activities for students to practise
with the proper hand-washing process and other related exercises.
We keep supplying our areas of student interactions around the
school with additional sanitiser items. Ms Lia is on regular
spotcheck duty to monitor and to report on any health-related
matters.

With my warmest regards,
Natalya Krassilnikova-Epp
Principal

During the Unit of Inquiry: Who We Are, Kindergarten
explored responsibilities and being independent. Part of
the unit was about personal hygiene and was directly
linked with good health under sustainable development
goal (SDG). Our youngest students had fun in the lab
learning about germs and bacteria and the importance
of washing hands, and general personal hygiene
activities, such as brushing teeth and taking a shower.
Students were excited to look at germs through a
microscope and they did a reflection activity by drawing
and describing what they had seen and learnt.

As part of their inquiry into 'How the world works', PYP 1
students, Ying XIn & Toto, constructed an Archimedean
screw and a wind powered car to investigate how simple
machinces can help us to move objects in different ways.

MYP Performing Arts
Field Trip

All MYP students study Performing Arts at UCSI consisting of Drama and
Music. Each year we visit the theatre at least once. Previous performances
include ’Romeo and Juliet’, ‘The Tempest’ and ‘The Man Who Planted
Trees’. This year we visited KLPAC for an amazing new adaption of ‘A
Midsummer Night’s Dream’. Twenty six students and three staff enjoyed
the show immensely as we watched the way five actors played twenty
different roles using a simple set, puppets and masks. This type of
production is ideal for IB students keen to develop their skills and
creativity. Links with our curriculum include review writing and reflection
( Arts Criteria D), learning more about stagecraft, portrayal and the use of
music for use in future productions and acting exercises ( Arts Criteria B)
and the development of subject specific knowledge ( Arts Criteria A ). It
was a wonderful night out and everyone enjoyed the play and the social
interaction a night out together provides. These glimpses into the world of
the performing arts provide examples for students preparing for Music
Showcases this semester, a imaginative impetus for MYP 1-3 students who
are going to produce their own self devised play with masks and
inspiration for MYP 4 & 5 students preparing their own production of ‘A
Midsummer Nights Dream’ for Drama Performance Night on June 24th
2020 in our own MPH.

UKEC team visited UCSI International school to present a workshop on
- Why study in the UK: MYP 4 to DP2 students attended this first part of the session
which encourages them to know the benefits of studying in the UK
- UCAS workshop: There was a hands-on experience in guiding DP2 students to
navigate through the UCAS portal and setting up a UCAS account, UKEC shared
some tips on how to make choices and guidance on writing competently for their
UCAS personal statement.

The collaboration with UKEC benefits DP students with the following services from
the UKEC.
- Helps DP students to achieve their dreams of studying abroad, particularly in the
UK and Ireland.
- Services that are offered by UKEC include but not limited to: personalized
counseling, application management, visa and accommodation application support.
- The school is informed well with regards to university courses and application
process, as well as workshops to keep students motivated in their studies.
- As Key Education Partners (KEP) UCSI students will be awarded RM2,000,
courtesy of UKEC Education Fund, should DP students enroll in UKEC partner
universities. Terms and conditions apply.
- Workshops for parents if needed on the future workforce and studying in the UK

Design

Design is a fascinating subject and stretches beyond all our imaginations.
When a person looks around themselves, they realize that everything is
designed by humans for society. With fast advancing technologies which help
us to solve problems, society is creating others such as plastic waste, global
warming and more. Learning design at UCSI will enable students to have an
understanding about some of the problems and issues that are being created
and critically thinking about possible solutions.

This year at UCSI the introduction of Design Technology to the DP students
affords them a continuum from MYP. Essentially the design cycle from MYP is
changed minorly to afford students more in the form of a strict syllabus to an
extension in HL beyond the classroom to marketing and manufacturing. This
continuum has enabled the MYP design to elaborate more on some of the key
and related concepts that will help the transition into DP Design Technology.
Examples would be Inventions, Innovation and ergonomics, which are a large
part of the DP syllabus.

Recently, the implementation of the Playground Development Project ECA
has the PYP students involved with the Design studio on Tuesdays between 3
PM and 4 PM. This is a great introduction for the PYP to have ideas and be
creative in solving problems while building on the playground for the younger
school students. The ECA also provides a continuum from PYP through MYP
and DP as students work cooperatively to create a safe playground. One of
the first projects is to be a tire seesaw and tire towers for students. The MYP 1
students this year are also working in the playground creating a safety railing
for the treehouse deck and have built two prototypes for the school to choose
from.

Sports Day

It was definitely a great opportunity for
our community of learners to display a

Profile.

All students and teachers were
collaborating together during Sports Day
activities to understand better of the
importance of balancing between

physical and emotional to achieve well-
being of ourselves and others. We enjoyed
and celebrated students' voice, choice and

and competitions. Our learners worked
very hard on their social skills based on
teamwork and respectful relationships.
Well-done, UCSI SH!
