Aquatic Centre
The
Vision
Learning to swim is a rite of passage for Australian children and experiences of public
pools and the beach are deeply rooted in the culture. However, what was once taken for
granted as a skill that everyone mastered, is increasingly less accessible – particularly for
those with limited access to aquatic environments. As the population becomes more
diverse, the need for access to swimming lessons has become more apparent and
immediate.
A school in Williamstown is never far from
the water and archival photographs from
the 1920s and 1930s capture historic
moments of our students on the beach,
evoking strong images of a way of life
inextricably linked with aquatic pursuits.
Indeed the association between Westbourne
and swimming stretches back to the
school’s earliest days and its first
headmaster, Charles Steedman.
Finally realising the vision of our
predecessors is an achievement made
possible through the passion and
persistence of parents, the community and
our benefactors. A community of believers.

Born in London in 1830, Steedman was a champion swimmer, having won the
championship of England in 1848, 1852 and 1853. Steedman arrived in Melbourne around
1854 and by 1861 was the manager of the Sandridge Baths, where he also conducted
swimming lessons. The publication of his Manual of Swimming (Melbourne: 1867)
established Steedman as a leading authority on swimming and the book was the first
major technical contribution to the new sport of ‘speed swimming’. Six years later a
London edition was an international success.

Building for
the Future
Westbourne students participate in a vast range of
programs and activities that challenge their ability to
think, perform and play.
Health, fitness and wellness are among our high priorities
because research identifies the association between
physical development and personal achievement in all
areas of learning and life.
To create a future where every child can be their best, we
are committed to initiatives that support wellbeing, fitness
and physical development. Access to swimming lessons
and other programs will be available to those within the
school and the wider community.
