2018 JDRF Hope Gala Program

Tucked away on SW Alder Street, you will find the exclusive Multnomah Whisk{e}y Library. MWL has received a great deal of press, and for good reason! It holds an extensive collection representing all major (and lesser) styles of distilled spirits known to the modern world. Once inside the upstairs space, you will be greeted by the beauty of its massive chandelier, exposed brick walls, fireplace, and vintage library feel. Bottles of liquor adorn the walls, and knowledgeable staff will stop by your table with a bar cart to provide tableside cocktail service. Your options are endless with a leather binder full of specialty cocktails, scotch, bourbon, whiskey, and spirits. Annual membership
to MWL entitles members to make reservations for seating, access
to members-only events and priority access to general library events, educational items, information on upcoming events, and purchasing opportunities. Membership is currently at capacity, but don’t fret! The winner will be provided with a year-long membership, bypassing the multi- year wait list! You will receive 4 complimentary hall passes to share with friends and family, and a $500 gift certificate to enjoy your favorite drams!
Value: $1,100

ARTIFICIAL PANCREAS WINS FDA APPROVAL A Welcome Step Forward
Last September the major announcement of the first- ever approved artificial pancreas (AP) system gave hope to millions in the T1D community. The device, which is expected to be on the market this year, utilizes computer algorithms to learn what an individual’s insulin needs are and to automatically act to minimize both potentially dangerous high and low glucose levels.
Since 2006 JDRF has been a key player in advancing the development of AP systems. With the goal of a completely automated AP system that very closely replicates the healthy pancreas, JDRF continues to push for improved sensing technology, fasting acting insulin and better ways to advance the development of AP systems.
In a statement, Aaron Kowalski, chief mission officer
for JDRF (formerly the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), said until there’s a cure for type 1 diabetes, “I know that the artificial pancreas will change many lives for the better.”
Thanks to your generous support JDRF is accelerating life-transforming breakthroughs in artificial pancreas research.

The mission of JDRF’s Youth Ambassador Program is to have children and teens share their story of life with type 1 diabetes (T1D) in an effort for our community to gain a better understanding and know the importance of raising funds for a cure.
This year the Oregon SW Washington Chapter’s Youth Ambassador Program has 20 amazing T1D community members participating. Some of the requirements for this program are:
• Have type 1 diabetes
• Be willing to share his/her personal story in front of groups
and the media
• Have a positive outlook on life and diabetes!
• Be within first and twelfth grade (ages 6-18 years old)
• Complete a minimum of 10 hours of participation in volunteer
service at JDRF events and community outreach dealings
These young community members ranch from age 7 to age 17 and most of them are in attendance this evening. We applaud their willingness to help education the public with what it is like to live with T1D and how we can all come together to turn Type One into Type None!
