Project Title:
FOUNDRY
Objectives:
1. Implement safety procedures in the foundry workshop.
2. To design and make simple mould pattern
3. Produce simple casting product

Introduction:
Sand casting, also known as sand molded casting, is a metal casting process
characterized by using sand as the mold material. The term "sand casting" can
also refer to an object produced via the sand casting process. Sand castings are
produced in specialized factories called foundries. Over 70% of all metal castings
are produced via a sand casting process.

2

Safety Precaution:
1. Before any work is carried out in the workshop, permission
must be obtained from the workshop supervisor or lecturer.
2. Always wear safety attire during welding process
3. Working areas and equipment are to be thoroughly cleaned after the usage
4. If you are the last person to leave the workshop, make sure all equipment is turned
off.

Tools and Equipment: Figure

Tools / Equipment

1.SAND MULLER
-A machine for mixing sand and
binders by a kneading and squeezing
action for use in sand molds. The
mixture is usually sand, clay, and
water, but synthetic chemical binders
may be used

2.RAMMER
-Rammers are required for striking the
molding sand mass in the molding box
to pack or compact it uniformly all
around the pattern. The common
forms of rammers used in ramming are
hand rammer, peen rammer, floor
rammer and pneumatic rammer

3.GREEN SAND
-Green sand is a compound mixture
used for casting of metals in foundry
applications as a mould

4

4.BLOWER
-used to blow excess parting materials
from the pattern and also to blow loose
sand and dirt from the mold cavity.

5.TONGS
-Tongs are a type of tool used to grip
and lift objects instead of holding them
directly with hands.

6.MOULD FLASK
-used to contain and support the Green
Sand during the mold making and mold
pouring processes.

7.SPRUCE PINS
-Sprue pin is a tapered rod of wood
or iron which is placed or pushed in
cope to join mold cavity while
the molding sand in the cope is being
rammed

5

8.BRUSH
-used to brush the pattern and the joint
of the mold .

Procedures: Figure
Procedure

1. Place the pattern into the sand to
make the desired mold

2. Incorporate a gating system.

6

3.Remove the pattern from cope and
drag.

4.Fill the mold cavity with molten
metal.

5.Let the metal cool for a few minutes

7

6.Break away the sand mold and
remove the casting.

RESULTS:
9

Discussion:

1. List down all marking and measurement tools during this project.
-Sprue pins

2. Discuss the result obtained compared with actual project specification
-The measurement of the product with the actual project specification is not
the same

3. What is the factor that causes project inaccuracy?
-Do not stop while fill the mold to avoid the project inaccurary.
-Does not emphasize safety in doing work.

Conclusion:
Foundry process in an important metallurgical process.A foundry is a place of factory
when the production of casting is produced by the use of melted metal poured in a
mold to solidify and produce a new shape.Foundry work is a process whereby casting
is produced that is all where we discussed the definition, applications,
