WARMUPà HANDS & FEET
DRILL SET UP:
Each team will begin at the dots/top of circle at each end
Players will be broken into 4-5 lines at each end to have a desired 3 players per line
DESCRIPTION:
One end will begin the drill with one player leaving from each line. The player will skate to the far end and
stop in front of their corresponding line before heading back to their original line. The players at the far
end will wait until a player has stopped in front of them before completing the same pattern of skating to
their corresponding line, stopping and skating back to their original line. Players will work through a
series of skill warmups as instructed by the coach. The purpose of this warmup is to get players active and
warmed in a quick effective manner
ALL COACHES ARE HIGHLY ENCOURAGED TO BE ACTIVE FOR THIS WARMUP!!
IE. Following players around the ice and giving active feedback

STATION #1à TRICKY ICKY
DRILL SET UP:
This drill will be set up on the circle
Coaches should make sure there is adequate space on the board side of this
drill for safety reasons
DRILL DESCRIPTION:
Six cones will be placed around the circle, in two groups of three, as shown in the
illustration. The drill will begin with the player gliding through the middle of the circle
before turning and doing cross-overs around the first group of pylons. The player will
then proceed to glide through the circle once again before doing cross-overs around
the second group of pylons. This entire process will then be repeated. Emphasis
should be placed on proper upper body and head placement as well as executing the
proper technique while doing cross-overs.

TRICKY ICKYà COACHING PROCESS
BANTAM & MIDGET
FOCUS: EDGES & CROSSOVERS, Technique & Efficiency
KEY TEACHING POINTS
FORWARDS ONLY Stick Leads à Look to where you want to goà Outside leg crosses over & Inside leg drives under
TRANSITIONS Heels first à Look to where you want to goà Outside leg crossover & Inside leg drives under
COMPLETE THE PATTERN 4 MINS
Players will complete the tricky icky pattern focusing on the technique and key teaching points
identified
FORWARDS TO BACKWARDS 4 MINS
Players will complete the pattern skating forwards up the middle and backwards down the side
FORWARDS TO FORWARDS TRANSITIONS 3 MINS
Players will skate up the middle of the circle completing a forwards to forwards transition at the top of
the circle each time
STRESS THIS…
TIGHT TURN/CROSSOVERS
Order of operations—when executing a tight turn player should follow this order of operations:
1- Stick Leads—creating a path for body to follow
2- Head looks—eyes and head look to the desired area of ice
3- Feet Staggered-- Inside leg leads
When crossing over players should not only develop power through crossing their outside leg over but
also using their inside leg to drive under their body
When turning players should have two hands on their stick, when in open ice players should have one
hand on their stick
TRANSITIONS
Order of operations—when executing a tight turn player should follow this order of operations:
1. Heels Lead- players want to make their turn as tight and efficient as possible while still
maintaining speed. To do players must lead with their heels first to start their transition
NOT toes and then heels
2. C-Cut—after leading with their heels players will complete a c-cut motion to turn their
body and start their initial l motion backwards
3. Backwards to forwards—when completing the backwards to forewords potion of this drill
players should just make an open hip push, not crossing their feet over
4. Forwards to Forward- players will lead into the transition heels first, complete one
crossover, before turning upper body/stick and sprinting forwards once again
REGRESSIONS
As a regression players can “Complete the Pattern” focusing on getting a feel for their edges and
following the proper order of operations when completing the drill
ADVANCED PROGRESSIONS
For a more advanced progression coaches can look to add pucks, placing a focus on players
demonstrating the same level of mastery with and without the puck
When handling the puck players should look to be as efficient as possible—pushing the puck as they go
forwards, cupping the puck as they turn and then dragging the puck as they skate backwards
KGHA 2019.20 DEVELOPMENT
STATION #2à FIGURE 8 & EXPLODE
DRILL SET UP:
This drill should run cross ice, with players starting on one side and
ending on the far side
One set should be set up for every 3 players to reach desired work to rest
ratios, this will mean two sets will need to be set up
DRILL DESCRIPTION:
Two pylons will be set up about ten feet apart directly in front of the line of
players. The first pylon will be set five feet in front of the line of players. The first
player in line will make a tight turn around the far pylon, make one crossover
and then explode to closest pylon. He then will once again make a tight turn, one
crossover and explode out of the drill and wait in line on the far side of the
pylons. The pattern the player skates should resemble a figure 8. Player two in
line may leave after player one has competed his second turn. Emphasis should
be placed on the proper mechanics of a tight turn, exploding out of the tight
turns and getting three good strides in between the pylons.

FIGURE 8 & EXPLODEà COACHING PROCESS
BANTAM & MIDGET
FOCUS: TIGHT TURNS, Efficiency & Technique
KEY TEACHING POINTS
Stick leadsà Feet Staggeredà Look to where you want to go
INSIDE EDGE, HOLD & EXPLODE 4 MINS
Players will to the far pylon before lifting their inside leg and holding the inside edge on their outside leg as they
make their way around the pylon—once around, the player with sprint to the second pylon and repeat the process
on the other foot before sprinting into line.
OUTSIDE EDGE, HOLD & EXPLODE 4 MINS
Players will to the far pylon before lifting their outside leg and holding the outside edge on their inside
leg as they make their way around the pylon—once around, the player with sprint to the second pylon
and repeat the process on the other foot before sprinting into line
COMPLETE THE PATTERN! 3 MINS
Players will complete the figure 8 pattern placing an emphasis on the “order of operation” indicated in the “stress
this section
STRESS THIS…
Order of operations—when executing a tight turn player should follow this order of operations:
1- Stick Leads—creating a path for body to follow
2- Head looks—eyes and head look to the desired area of ice
3- Feet Staggered-- Inside leg leads
4- On Crossover—exit the turn with one crossover
When turning players should have two hands on their stick, when in open ice players should have one
hand on their stick
REGRESSIONS
When ‘Completing the pattern” players who are struggling with the drill should focus on the following
elements within the drill. By perfecting these areas players should be able to master the skill as a whole
STANCE
Players should be in a good deep knee bend, flexing forward at their ankles and keeping their
head/chest up at all times
STAGGERED FEET
Once the stance is mastered an emphasis on making sure both feet are on the ice, staggered and on
their appropriate edges
ORDER OF OPERATIONS
Once proper stance and feet positioning have been achieved, players can tie everything together by
properly going through the steps in the order of operations
ADVANCED PROGRESSIONS
For a more advanced progression coaches can look to add pucks, placing a focus on players
demonstrating the same level of mastery with and without the puck
When handling the puck players should look to be as efficient as possible—pushing the puck as they go
forwards, cupping the puck as they turn and then dragging the puck as they skate backwards
KGHA 2019.20 DEVELOPMENT
STATION #3à 3 CONE EDGEWORK
DRILL SET UP:
Players will be broken into partners, with one partner active and the
other resting
This drill should be set up a few feet off of the boards to allow for a safe
amount of space between the resting and active partners
One set of the drill should be set up for each set of partners (IE: 5-6
players= 3 drill set ups)
DESCRIPTION:
Players will make their way through a series of edgework related drills following the
progressions listed on the following page. For each progression each player will get 15-
20 seconds of an active rep while their partner rests and then they switch when indicated
to by the coach.
KGHA 2019.20 DEVELOPMENT
3 CONE EDGEWORKà COACHING PROCESS
BANTAM & MIDGET
FOCUS: TIGHT TURN, Efficiency & Technique
KEY TEACHING POINTS
Lean into lacesà Stick leadsà Feet Staggeredà Look to where you want to go
COMPLETE THE PATTERN 2 MINS
Players will complete the pattern in a game like manner, once again using their edges to generate power but also
crossing over as they exit each “end” turn to generate power in a new direction
ADD A JUMP 2 MINS
Players will now lay their stick down as shown in the illustration and complete the pattern, executing a two foot hop
each time they get to a stick
INSIDE EDGES 2 MINS
Players will isolate one leg at a time holding their inside edges and alternating legs as they complete the pattern (sticks
still in middle)
OUTSIDE EDGES 2 MINS
Players will isolate one leg at a time holding their outside edges and alternating legs as they complete the pattern
(sticks still in middle)
TAP AND GO (ICKY SHUFFLE)! 2 MINS
As a final progression players will go back to an inside edge isolation as they make their way around the pattern, as
they approach the stick they will have some quick footwork, tapping their inside leg down on the ice, followed by their
outside leg and then exploding over the stick. This footwork pattern is often referred to as the icky shuffle
STRESS THIS…
STICK LEADS (when with stick): players stick creates a path for feet to follow
FEET ARE STAGGERED: players enter tight turn with feet staggered. Inside leg leads (on
outside edge), outside leg follows (on inside edge)
HEAD TURNS: head leads the body and looks in the direction the player is going
ON CROSSOVER: player exist the turn with one crossover and then gets into stride/secondary
movement
GOOD ATHLETIC STANCE: nose aligns with toes, 90 degree knee bend, lean into laces
REGRESSIONS
As a regression the players sticks can be removed as an obstacle to clear
REMEMBER: our goal is to always have players master a skill, not a drill, so making
regressions like these can be a good way to achieve our desired result
ADVANCED PROGRESSIONS
If the primary progressions are too basic for the group, coaches can skip ahead to some of the latter
progressions to allow player for repetitions at each progression
For strong players the sticks can be removed and players can execute a single leg isolation where
players will stay on one leg the entire time, using their inside and outside edges to develop power/speed
and complete the pattern
KGHA 2019.20 DEVELOPMENT
GROUPà QUICKSTARTS
DRILL SET UP:
Players should be broken up into group of three
Each “group” will have their own drill set up
The start for this drill will be “coach controlled” to make it reactionary with
players leaving on the coaches GO
DESCRIPTION:
Two sticks (not three as shown in illustration) will be lined up perpendicular to the player. The
distance these sticks are spread apart will be based on skill level and size. Players will begin
behind these sticks in a good knee bend ready to do an open hip start (not a V-start). When the
coach says GO, the player will execute a quickstart. Each step made in this quickstart should be a
step over a stick before finally getting into a regular, full length stride and exploding to a pylon
KGHA 2019.20 DEVELOPMENT
QUICKSTARTSà COACHING PROCESS
BANTAM & MIDGET
FOCUS: Efficiency & Technique
KEY TEACHING POINTS
Stick leadsà Feet Staggeredà Look to where you want to go
STATIONARY START 2 REPS EACH
For the first progression players will start from a good athletic stance and react to the coaches GO before
quickstarting. Coaches should make sure players do not “cheat” when setting up, instead keeping their body square
up the ice as if they are in a glide position before reacting and sprinting up ice
START FROM KNEES 2 REPS EACH
Players will start from their knees, using their “power leg” to get up first and make their initial push. Players should
step directly into their stride from the start vs standing up and then getting into their stride
START FROM STOMACH 2 REPS EACH
Players will start from their stomach, getting up to their knees and then using their “power leg” to get up first and
make their initial push. Players should step directly into their stride from the start vs standing up and then getting
into their stride
DROP TO KNEES 2 REPS EACH
On the coaches GO the player will complete a quickstart over the stick and heads towards the cone, when the coach
yells “DROP” players will maintain their speed but drop to their knees before quickly getting back up and continuing
to quickstart towards their pylon
DROP TO STOMACH 2 REPS EACH
On the coaches GO the player will complete a quickstart over the stick and heads towards the cone, when the coach
yells “DROP” players will maintain their speed but drop to their stomach before quickly getting back up and
continuing to quickstart towards their pylon
BACKCHECK QUICKSTARTS
On the coaches GO the player will complete a quickstart over the stick and heads towards the cone, when the coach
yells “DROP” players will maintain their speed but drop to their knees before getting back up and STOPPING to
head back towards their line when they quickstart
STRESS THIS…
GOOD ATHLETIC STANCE: 90 degree knee bend, align nose with toes, lean into laces
ARM SWING: arms do not swing north-south or east-west but instead arms extend in line with
the glide leg
OPEN HIP PUSH: the quickstart begins with an open hip push, NOT a V-start, as it is more
game applicable
REGRESSIONS
As a regression the sticks can be reduced OR removed
REMEMBER: we are looking to have players master a skill NOT a drill so any adaptations OR
regressions to a drill to help them towards that goal are acceptable
ADVANCED PROGRESSIONS
If the primary progressions are too basic for the group, coaches can skip ahead to some of the latter
progressions to allow player for repetitions at each progression
