Berenice Gallegos - Period 2

The Pieces To My Life

I was born in a little town in Marietta, Georgia on September 11, 2004 . I had
a natural birth but my family says that I was a fat baby I came out weighing
6lbs and 5oz. I first became a family when my dad left to Mexico and I got
used to not having that male figure in my life. So my sisters and mom all
became very close. We are a family of 4, my 17 year old sister, 10 year old
sister and my beautiful mother. Soon after my dad left, my grandmother
vowed to never leave our sides and to help my mom take care of us. To this
day we are still living together and I hope she can stay with us forever.

An important experience that shaped me into who I am today is my father.
When I was 3 years old my father had to leave to Mexico and that made me
very sad because my little sister was like 6 months old and she has never
truly met him. Soon after this I gradually started becoming much more
independent, because I learned that everyone you love isn’t always going to be
there. I don’t like people doing things for me because I know I can do this
myself and I push myself everyday with my head held high. One day I wish to
take my little sister to Mexico so she can finally see our father after 11
years.

Another important life event that changed me is that my mom found a
boyfriend. He was there when my mom needed a friend especially because my
dad was not with us. I don’t get mad anymore about it because back then I did
not like him at all and I wouldn’t tolerate him. Now I realised that I don’t
have to treat everyone bad because of him, he is actually a good guy. If my
mom is happy that means that I am happy. I love her since she had the
strength to raise my sisters and I alone with no help whatsoever. She raised
us to be good people and that in life nothing is ever easy. You have to fight
for what you believe in, and she believed in us.

Lastly another experience that shaped me into who I am is that my father
has a problem called “la gota” in spanish and when I was born it turns out that
I had inherited that problem which leaves me incapable of walking a lot, but if
I do, I will get fever and my legs become very irritated. My family noticed
this problem with me when I was beginning to walk. This has never let me give
up though. Just because I have gouty arthritis it doesn't mean I can’t be a
normal girl that has dreams like everyone else.

Pain and inflammation occur when too
much uric acid crystallizes and
deposits in the joints.
Symptoms of gout include severe pain,
redness, and swelling in joints, often
the big toe. Attacks can come
suddenly, often at night.
During an acute attack,
anti-inflammatory medications
(NSAIDs) can help to relieve pain and
shorten the length of the attack.

Berenice Itzel Gallegos, but as her friends call her, Bere, was born in
Marietta Georgia on September 11, 2004 . She was born with gouty arthritis
just like her father which causes a lot of pain in her joints. That hasn’t
stopped her from being a normal 14 yr old girl. She enjoys going to the park
and playing with her cat Nyla. She is very family-oriented and loves spending
time with her mom and two sisters. When she grows up she wishes to be a
psychologist to help kids and adults who are going through tough moments.
Now she lives in Torrance, California and is enjoying life to the fullest
because life is just one.
