Learning to read has two stages which is beginning reading and further reading. The purpose
of beginning reading is that to help students correctly and fluently recognize letters and read
them into simple words and sentences. Meanwhile further reading is to help the students to
understand the meaning contained in writing or reading (Nurani & Mahendra, 2019).

Reading techniques
• Skimming
Helps students to grasp the general idea or gist of a text
• Scanning
Allows students to get more in-depth of their specific information by locating the
precise information by identifying the key points in a text

• Detailed reading
Allows students to critically consider aspects of the text

• Revision reading
Involves reading rapidly through the materials which is already familiarized, in order
to confirm the knowledge and understanding

• KWLH technique (Know, Want, Learned, How)
K- Recalling what students know about the subject
W- Determine what students want to learn
L- Identifying what students learn as they read
H- How can students learn more

What is SQ3R? SQ3R stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review, and it
is the abbreviation for Robinson's five phases for actively and effectively reading the
entire material. Readers are expected to gain a better grasp of the material by actively
participating in the reading process before, during, and after the sequence. (Marbella
International University Centre, 2020).

• SQ3R technique
S- Survey (Survey the reading materials)
Q- Question (Question the text in-order to understand better)
R- Read (read and jot down important information)
R- Recite (Recite verbally based on the notes taken)
R- Review (Picture everything you learned in your mind)

WHY DO WE TAKE NOTES?
According to G. Staley’s research, of people who only read their notes can only remember
10% of their notes. Meanwhile, others that write or take notes remember 65% of them.

NOTE TAKING METHODS

Column Notes: Groups information according to its type and arranges it in columns
Outline Notes: - In points/ paragraphs/ numbers/ words

-Uses phrases and key words
Summary Notes: Notes are usually copied back from the text that we understand but not in
simple form
