Sport
at Loretto

Handbook

1

Loretto is a school where all pupils are given the opportunity to choose, enjoy
and succeed in Sport. We actively encourage and reward effort; teamwork
and loyalty are highly valued and we respect tradition, with team sports at the
heart of our games programme. Loretto also promotes individual pursuits,
recognising these additional opportunities for pupils to enjoy physical activity,
compete, and excel. We encourage lifelong participation.

Our aim is to ensure that every pupil engages regularly in physical activity, has
the opportunity to represent the school at Sport, and leaves equipped to lead
a healthy and active lifestyle. We want our pupils to enjoy both their games
sessions and matches, learning to deal with victory and defeat appropriately.

We achieve these aims by developing our pupils’ physical literacy through
Sport and Physical Education (PE), contributing to a healthy mind and body.
Within a competitive environment, our pupils learn the values of sportsman-
ship: fair play, respect, tolerance, and commitment. We nurture the qualities
of leadership, providing opportunities for pupils to lead others.

Whatever your ability, Loretto sport is preparation for life.

Fixtures

All sports fixtures are published in the School Calendar and are subject to
change. The sports portal (lorettosport.com) mirrors the school website,
providing regularly updated information on sports fixtures and arrangements.
Cancellation information will be posted on the School Calendar.
U13 Games and Fixtures
The majority of our fixtures at U13 level are on Wednesdays and against Prep
Schools. We also arrange some U12 matches against Day Schools on Saturday
mornings to further increase playing opportunities. Prep Schools select their
1st and 2nd teams from the top two year groups (Year 7 and 8) and so these
teams are a mixture of U12 and U13 pupils. Where possible, we have chosen
to combine our Year 7 and 2nd Form (Year 8) to provide a comparable pool of
players and to field more teams, enabling us to provide greater participation
at the level that best suits all our pupils.

excessive or inappropriate.

 Criticism or undermining of the Umpire / Referee is never acceptable.
 Spectators should not enter the field of play without the express

permission of the Umpire / Referee or Medical staff.

Participation in Sport
All pupils will participate in the major games for each term with the following
exceptions:
2nd, 3rd, and 4th Form pupils unable to participate positively in the major sport
on medical grounds may participate in an option. This is at the discretion of
the Head of Sport, and Senior Management Team.
All 5th Form pupils will take part in major sport at least twice a week unless
they are members of the Golf Performance Squad or Swimming Squad. Non-
contact rugby will be offered for those with appropriate reason, which must
be signed off by the Head of Sport and Senior Management Team.

Summer Term
A reduced fixture list operates for Senior pupils during the Summer Term.
There are limited mid-week fixtures for Seniors after half term. This is to allow
pupils full exam preparation whilst retaining a productive sports programme
and fixture list.
During exam time, in order to fulfil fixture commitments, all pupils who do
not have an exam on the day of the match are available for team selection.
In exceptional circumstances, permission may be given to miss a match for
revision purposes, which must be sought at least 48 hours in advance.

24

Pupils may also be given permission to miss a non-fixture games session for
revision purposes, at the discretion of the Games staff and Head of Sport.

Team Selection Policy

It is the coaches’ responsibility to:
 Provide the team with training sessions appropriate to the age and stage

of the pupils involved.
 Select pupils based on the criteria set out in this document.
 Inform pupils of their selection by placing a team sheet on

lorettosport.com and the games board in the Red Hall or VIP notice area at
the Junior School.
 Inform of selection at least 24 hours in advance of any match.

It is the pupils’ responsibility to:
 Check notices on the lorettosport website, in the Red Hall (School House)

or VIP notice area at the Junior School, including any significant
information about venue, timings, attire etc. and to find out when / where
their games session is taking place.
 Attend all games sessions and matches unless Off Games (Medical Centre)
or having been given Special Leave (Head of Sport or Senior Management)
not to attend.
 Attend games sessions wearing regulation Games kit including items of
safety gear e.g. gum shield and shin pads.

25

To represent the school in sport, pupils must fulfil the following criteria.
Selection criteria have been split into four sections: Technical, Non-Technical,
Desirable Qualities and Special Circumstances. Every pupil that plays sport at
Loretto School is assessed according to this criteria for the purposes of
fairness and parity.

Technical
 In order to represent the school a pupil should:
 Demonstrate a skill level that contributes positively to the performance of

a team in their year group.
 Be able to carry out tactics set by the coach effectively.

Or
 Show potential which can be developed throughout their school career.

Non-Technical
 In order to represent the school a pupil should:
 Demonstrate a positive attitude towards training at all times.
 Attend all training sessions unless Off Games or given Special Leave.
 Be able to communicate positively with both team mates and coaching

staff.

Desirable Qualities. Pupils at Loretto School should be striving to:
 Demonstrate leadership skills: relaying messages to teammates, leading

warm-ups, and demonstrating during games sessions and matches.

26

 Take ownership and responsibility for learning within games sessions, i.e.
develop opinions about set plays and playing principles in order to
increase knowledge and understanding of the game.

 Engage in technical and tactical conversation with both coaches and
teammates.

Special Circumstances

 A pupil may be selected to play in teams above their age group only if:

 They demonstrates a skill level that can contribute positively to the
performance of the more advanced team he / she is stepping into.

 They can carry out tactics set by the coach of the more advanced team
effectively.

 They can cope with the physical demands of competing against older
opponents.

 There is no-one in the older year group that can contribute positively to
the performance of the team in the same way as the identified younger
player.

Please note that any movement of players would be as a result of close
consultation between all relevant coaches, the Head of the individual sport
and the Head of Sport.

Exemplar Situations

 Player A satisfies the criteria as set in Special Circumstances, but does not
want to move up to the advanced team. Outcome = Player stays with
younger age group.

27

 Player A satisfies the criteria as set in Special Circumstances but it is not
felt that they would be able to cope in the new social environment in the
proposed advanced team. Outcome = Player stays with younger age group.

 Player A satisfies the criteria as set in Special Circumstances but it is felt
that they would be used in a rotational system therefore minimizing the
time they would actually play. Outcome = Player moves into advanced
team but will play for the younger age group if there is fixture clash.

Spectator Code of Conduct

As a spectator watching an event that is conducted or sanctioned by Loretto
School, you must meet the following requirements with regard to your
conduct.
 Spectators are an important part of the game and shall at all times

conform to accepted standards of good sportsmanship and behaviour.
 Spectators shall at all times respect officials, coaches and players and

extend all courtesies to them.
 Spectators are there to support and not coach.
 Lead by example and respect all players, coaches, umpires and fellow

spectators. Physical or verbal abuse will not be tolerated.
 Respect the umpires’ decision. Do not abuse, threaten or intimidate an

umpire or match official and do not show dissension, displeasure or
disapproval towards an umpire or match official’s decision in an abusive or
unreasonable fashion.

28

 Support skilled performances and show respect for opposition teams and
players.

 Display appropriate social behaviour by not using profane, demeaning or
derogatory language, or harassing players, coaches, officials or other
spectators.

 Leave the spectator area tidy and free from litter.
 Do not ridicule mistakes or losses.
 Acknowledge all volunteers who are giving up their valuable time to enable

the conduct of competition.
 Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every person.

Dietary Supplements Policy

In order for the pupils at Loretto to achieve a healthy lifestyle they should try
and achieve a balanced diet where whole foods form the basis of their diet.
The food provided by the Loretto Catering Department ensures a well-
balanced diet is provided throughout the week.

We promote the following principles for training:
 Always have a water bottle with you at training
 Get at least 8 hours sleep, more after hard sessions.
 Stretch at least 2 to 3 times a week.
 Always eat 3 main meals per day (2 small meals in-between). Breakfast is

crucial.

29

 Eat plenty of white meat and fish.

 Eat plenty of colourful vegetables and salad.

 Eat plenty of pasta, potatoes and rice.

 Ensure you time your meals around training sessions. Eat both before and
immediately after.

On occasion, an elite representative sportsperson may be advised they
require a dietary supplement by a coach from a National Governing Body
(NGB). Loretto works closely with NGBs where our pupils are involved in
training programmes issued by them. Whilst the school is happy to offer
advice on the effects of supplements, such as Whey Protein, we will not
recommend or supply any form of dietary supplement to our pupils. If
parents choose, after taking advice, to allow their child to take supplements
as part of their training regime then the parents must provide the
supplement, assume full responsibility for its use and inform the school
Medical Centre and the pupil’s Housemaster / Housemistress what
supplement is being used. This enables an accurate list of pupils who are
using parentally approved supplements, with parental responsibility, to be
held by the school.

Therefore, Loretto School’s position regarding supplements is as follows:

 If the pupils consistently follow the above principles, they will not need to
take any form of dietary supplement.

 Loretto staff may advise on the effects of dietary supplements to allow
parents to make an informed choice (additional advice from a General
Practitioner is also recommended).

30

 Loretto staff will not recommend the use of, or supply, any form of dietary
supplement.

 If any pupils that are not on the approved list described above are found
with supplements by House staff, pupils can expect them to be confiscated
and returned to their parents.

At Loretto we are dedicated to the safety of our pupils and we wish to
highlight that there is a risk to health if dietary supplements are taken without
suitable guidance. Any pupil or parent wishing to discuss this policy should
contact the Head of Games.

Transport Costs for Representative Training

An ever increasing number of Loretto pupils are selected for representative
sports squads at District, Regional or National level. Those selected are
occasionally required to travel to training sessions during or overlapping
Loretto Sports lessons. There may be occasions where staff can take pupils to
the sessions but this cannot be guaranteed, as staff may not be available at
the time. Wherever possible we would ask parents to take their children to
the training sessions but, failing that, public transport or taxis may be the
most appropriate means of transportation. Any transportation costs incurred
are the responsibility of the parents. Taxi fares will be charged to the pupils
account with parents’ permission and there is also an excellent bus service to
Edinburgh. If help is needed to co – ordinate taxis being booked please
contact the relevant Head of Sport and they will be able to assist.

31

Communications with the Loretto Sport Department
Open lines of communication between parents and the Sports Department
are actively encouraged, the Head of Sport and the department have an open
door policy. During term time, School Life and commitments become very
busy and we will endeavour to respond promptly to communications
wherever possible. If a matter is time sensitive it is advised to telephone the
school and speak with the appropriate member of staff.
