Selection for Teams
(see Appendix 1 for full selection policy)
Selection for sides is based on age and ability.
In terms of age: Year 4
U9 sides are selected from Year 5
U10 — Year 5/ Year 6
U11 — Year 7
U12 — Year 7/ Form 2
U13 —
On occasion pupils may be selected to include younger or stronger players from
other year groups according to the other fixtures being played that day and to
ensure as many pupils as possible are given the opportunity to represent the
School.
The majority of our fixtures at U13 level are on Wednesdays and against Prep
Schools. We also arrange some U12 matches against Day Schools on Saturday
mornings to further increase playing opportunities. Prep Schools select their 1st
and 2nd teams from the top two year groups (Year 7 and 8) and so these teams are
a mixture of U12 and U13 pupils. Where possible, we have chosen to combine our
Year 7 and 2nd Form (Year 8) to provide a comparable pool of players and to field
more teams, enabling us to provide greater participation at the level that best suits
all our pupils.
In terms of ability, Loretto has an inclusive ‘Sport for All’ approach so sides will be
selected to be competitive, and also to ensure that all children have the
opportunity to represent the School. We want to win games and remain
competitive while at the same time allowing every pupil the chance to represent
the School. All children will be encouraged to show good sportsmanship,
commitment to preparation and a positive attitude in training and in matches.
Team sheets will list players in alphabetical order and, in the younger sides,
Captaincy will be rotated. Pupils not involved in fixtures on any given day will have a
games period.
Results
All results and match reports will be posted on the Sports website. Also individual
team Captains (and this responsibility will be shared) will be asked to email a brief
match report to Mr Jackman as soon as possible after the match and before the
end of that week. Mr Jackman will coordinate the website, reports and photos.
11
Match Day Procedures
All pupils in Year 4 - Form 2 are considered eligible for selection for the appropriate
School team for all School matches.
Pupils and parents should check the School calendar for notification of fixtures and
updates to arrangements. Selection lists will be published at least 24 hours in
advance.
Calendared school matches are a compulsory part of Loretto and if selected to play,
every pupil is expected to honour that commitment.
For Home matches, pupils arrive in full school Sports kit with any additional
necessary playing kit.
For Away matches, pupils will travel in Red and Grey or Sports kit as directed by the
Head of Sport or the Coach in charge of their team. If a school informs us of limited
changing facilities at the Away venue, the pupils may travel in tracksuits. This
information will appear on the team sheet.
For Away Rugby matches only, pupils will travel in School uniform. If a School
informs us of limited changing facilities at the away venue, the pupils may travel in
School tracksuits. This information will appear on the team sheet. All pupils should
be immaculately dressed on match days whether in track suits or uniform.
Match Day Catering
Refreshments are available for parents and visiting staff after matches in the Library
or Senior Dining Room in the Autumn and Spring terms. In the Summer term, the
after match refreshments for parents and visiting staff are in the Newfield Tea
Room.
Refreshments are available for all players after matches in the Nipper or Senior
Dining rooms in the Autumn and Spring terms. In the Summer term, the after
match refreshments for all players are in the Newfield Tea Room.
Occasionally, the Year 7 teams accompany the U13 teams that have travelled large
distances to the main Senior School dining room for a hot meal after matches.
Parents and visitors are welcome. Pupils are expected to attend Match Tea.
Commitment to Fixtures
We strive to provide the opportunity for all pupils of all abilities to enjoy sport and
represent the school, as well as putting the values of commitment, teamwork,
loyalty and endeavour into practice. We are a small school and have to work
together to achieve success. Representing the school and honouring school
commitments is vital if we are to remain successful. We endeavour to create the
environment where playing sport and representing the school is a highly valued
and worthwhile experience for all pupils, and have clear systems of communication
to help with planning external events. We ask all parents and pupils to support the
school by adhering to the procedures regarding fixtures and games sessions
outlined in the next pages. 12
Inter Colour House Competitions
Inter Colour competitions were introduced in 2003 to facilitate additional
opportunities for participation and competition in sports (and other activities) in a
fun, encouraging and inclusive environment.
The number of Inter Colour competitions have grown giving, pupils the opportunity
to participate and compete in over 20 events a year, concluding with Inter Colour
Athletics (Sports Day), which is designed to be inclusive, fun and colourful. The
winning Colour receives the Championship Trophy at the end of year Sports Prize
Giving.
Pupils are allocated a Colour on entry to the school (whether in Junior or Senior)
with siblings being allocated to the same Colour. Pupils develop a strong identity
and loyalty to their Colour and the competitions provide further opportunity to
develop the character and values that form part of the Loretto education.
Pupils require a Colour t-shirt to wear when competing in the Inter Colour
Competitions. These are available from Clan House or the School Shop:

Appendix 1
Loretto School Sport Selection Policy
Our aim is to ensure that all pupils at Loretto School get a fair and equal chance to
represent the School, at a level appropriate to their ability, whilst enabling
individuals to improve and develop their ability in Sport.
Rationale
All ‘A’ teams are selected to be the most competitive teams possible with an
emphasis on performance and winning matches.
‘B’ and ‘C’ teams are selected with participation as the main objective and the
opportunity to be involved in competitive matches at an appropriate level.
Where there is no B team (due to numbers) then playing opportunities for pupils
of all levels will be provided within the fixture calendar but not all pupils should
expect to play in all matches.
Responsibilities
1) It is the coaches’ responsibility to:
Provide the team with training sessions appropriate to the age and stage of the
pupils involved.
Select pupils based on criteria set out in this document.
Inform pupils of their selection by placing a teamsheet on the Loretto Sport
website and the appropriate games board in the Red Hall (School House) or VIP
notice area at the Junior School.
Inform of selection at least 24 hours in advance of any match.
2) It is the pupils’ responsibility to:
Observe notices on the Loretto Sport website, in the VIP notice area at the Junior
School, pertaining to selection of matches (including any other information about
venue, timings, attire et c.) or to find out when / where their games session is
taking place.
Attend all games sessions and matches unless they are “off games” (medcentre /
parental permission) or been given “special leave” (Head of Junior School or
Director of Sport) not to attend.
Attend games sessions wearing the appropriate games kit (as outlined by the
School) – including items of safety gear e.g. mouth guard and shin pads.
30
Selection for Loretto School Teams
To represent the School in Sport pupils must fulfil the following criteria. Criteria for
selection have been split into four sections – Technical, Non-Technical, Desirable
Qualities and Special Circumstances. Every pupil that plays Sport at Loretto School is
assessed according to this criterion for the purposes of fairness and parity.
Selection Criteria
1) Technical – In order to represent the School a pupil should:
Demonstrate a skill level that contributes positively to the performance of a team
in his / her year group
Be able to carry out tactics set by the coach effectively
or
Show potential which can be developed throughout his / her School career
2) Non-Technical – In order to represent the School a pupil should:
Demonstrate a positive attitude towards training at all times
Attend all training sessions – unless “off games” or given “special leave”
Be able to communicate positively with both team mates and coaching staff
3) Desirable Qualities – Pupils at Loretto School should be striving to:
Demonstrate leadership skills – relaying messages to teammates, leading warm-
ups, and demonstrating – during games sessions and matches
Take ownership and responsibility for learning within games sessions i.e. develop
opinions about set plays and playing principles in order to increase knowledge
and understanding of the game
Engage in technical and tactical conversation with both coaches and teammates
4) Special Circumstances – A pupil may be selected to play in teams above their age
group only if:
He / she demonstrates a skill level that can contribute positively to the
performance of the more advanced team he / she is stepping into
He / she can carry out tactics set by the coach of the more advanced team
effectively
He / she can cope with the physical demands of competing against older
opponents
There is no-one in the older year group that can contribute positively to the
performance of the team in the same way as the identified younger player
31
Appendix 2
Dietary Information
In order for the pupils at Loretto to achieve a healthy lifestyle they should try and
achieve a balanced diet where whole foods form the basis of their diet. The food
provided by the Loretto Catering Department ensures a well-balanced diet is
provided throughout the week.
We promote the following principles for training:
Always have a water bottle with you at training
Get at least 8 hours sleep, more after hard sessions.
Stretch at least 2 to 3 times a week.
Always eat 3 main meals per day (2 small meals in-between).
Eat plenty of white meat and fish.
Eat plenty of colourful vegetables and salad.
Eat plenty of pasta, potatoes and rice.
Ensure you time your meals around training sessions. Eat both before and
immediately after.
On occasion, an elite representative sportsperson may be advised they require a
dietary supplement by a coach from a National Governing Body (NGB). Loretto
works closely with NGBs where our pupils are involved in training programmes
issued by them. Whilst the school is happy to offer advice on the effects of
supplements, such as Whey Protein, we will not recommend or supply any form of
dietary supplement to our pupils. If parents choose, after taking advice, to allow
their child to take supplements as part of their training regime then the parents
must provide the supplement, assume full responsibility for its use and inform the
school Medical Centre and the pupil’s Housemaster / Housemistress what
supplement is being used. This enables an accurate list of pupils who are using
parentally approved supplements, with parental responsibility, to be held by the
school. Therefore, Loretto School’s position regarding supplements is as follows:
If the pupils consistently follow the above principles, they will not need to take
any form of dietary supplement.
Loretto staff may advise on the effects of dietary supplements to allow parents to
make an informed choice (additional advice from a General Practitioner is also
recommended).
Loretto staff will not recommend the use of, or supply, any form of dietary
supplement.
If any pupils that are not on the approved list described above are found with
supplements by House staff, pupils can expect them to be confiscated and
returned to their parents.
At Loretto we are dedicated to the safety of our pupils and we wish to highlight that
there is a risk to health if dietary supplements are taken without suitable guidance.
Any pupil or parent wishing to discuss this policy should contact the Head of
Games.
