The Frogmarch...Ten years on
Allo Maaates!
Ten years ago I made a promise to Froggy's
son Mark that his dads name would live on
in the heart and souls of everyone that was
fortunate enough to be around during those
days when the great man was doing his stuff.
Well mate, I've kept it and we have seen this
event grow from approx 80 attendees at a
hotel in Clacton to what it is now with over
1000 coming along during the course of the
day at the 8th event.
He may have even had been responsible for
some "divine intervention" as it was where
I met Melissa and our first photo together
was taken.....
Anyway, hoping you all have a fantastic day
and night and thank you all so much for
coming out to show your support for a man
that truly was a legend within the soul, dance
and sound systems scene.

DJ Froggy
Innovative disc jockey, he helped to transform the British club scene
Marc Rowlands
In 1978 the disc jockey DJ Froggy, who has died of a
brain haemorrhage aged 58, installed his sound system
at one of Britain's first soul "all-dayers", the National
Soul Festival in Purley. A year later he was a DJ at the
first Caister soul weekender in Great Yarmouth, along-
side a group of DJs - including Robbie Vincent, Chris Hill,
Greg Edwards and Jeff Young - which comprised the
Soul Mafia. Froggy's innovative use of mixing decks and
tape recorders, alongside his self-built sound system
and the mixing consoles he designed himself,
transformed the British club scene, acting as a catalyst,
and a blueprint, for late 1980s rave culture. Froggy's
style and theatricality heralded that explosion. In the
early 1980s, prior to electro and hip-hop, he was the
country's pre-eminent technical DJ.
In 1979 Froggy had visited Billboard magazine's New York disco convention, and there he
picked up the theory behind New York's DJs' mixing techniques. He studied the practice at
Studio 54 and Paradise Garage, watching DJ Larry Levan synchronising the rhythm of two
records, cross-fading to play sections of their sounds simultaneously, while overlaying
effects from a third turntable. Levan was presenting familiar music in a unique manner with
pauses in the soundtrack introduced, often sparingly, and always at the DJ's instigation.
Back in Britain, Froggy modified his sound system, and mastered cross-fading. Within
months the Soul Mafia, using that system, were playing to more than 15,000 people at
Knebworth. His creation was still prospering as a hired-out concern in the mid-1980s
rare-groove scene, and in the early rave movement.
In the 1980s Froggy developed his relationship with Radio 1, editing tracks for segments in
Peter Powell's show. Later came record company work where Froggy provided extended
disco mixes and shortened radio edits of tracks.
Born Steven Howlett, he was a Londoner from the East End, the son of Jean and Kenneth
Howlett. His father was a mechanical engineer at Plessey's. His mother died when he was
seven. Educated at Dane secondary school in Ilford, Essex, he was fascinated by sound
equipment - and by the radiogram his father brought home from work.
Apprenticed as an engineer at 15, he took his City and Guilds qualification, and chaired the
apprentice association. As such, and using a sound system he had built, he put on his own
shows. Then in 1971 came a DJ residency at the Bird's Nest, in Romford, Essex.
It was then that DJ Froggy was born.
Spotted by pop act manager George Brown in 1972, he found himself providing DJ accom-
paniment for bands, later to include such names as the Sweet, T. Rex and Slade, usually at
large gig venues like Scunthorpe Baths. Encountering the DJ Emperor Rosko, who had be-
come famous via 1960s pirate radio, Froggy was stunned by the quality of the American's
sound system. So Froggy upgraded his own, and went in search of Yorkshire-based Mat
Mathias, who had designed the Rosko mixing console. Later Froggy and Mathias co-de-
signed their own consoles.
In 1974 the then Radio 1 disc jockey Dave Lee Travis suggested a collaboration. From 1974
to 1978 their act, which Travis describes as verging on cabaret, toured throughout Britain.
When Froggy quit, it was to focus on soul, disco and jazz-funk. He accepted many club dates
in the south of England and began a weekly residency at the Royalty, in Southgate, north
London, from late 1978. Then came Purley and the National Soul Festival.
Froggy lived in the Ilford area for most of his life. Married three times, he is survived by two
daughters and a son.

Its been 10 years since the passing of my dear friend
Steve aka FROGGY. We have gathered here to celebrate
his life and to remember the man and the music that he
played. I started as his roadie as a young teenager at the
age of 16 in 1977 at Ilford town hall junior disco.
A few months later he asked if I would like to help out
with the sound system at the ROYALTY Soul night in
Southgate. After a couple of years at the end of 1979
I bought a Sanyo Stereo radio and tape player also
known as a Ghetto Blaster made up a lead that would
connect to the decks and started recording the shows
onto TDK cassettes. This went on for around 5/6 years
recording the club nights Alldayers and the early Caister
Soul Weekenders.
In 2010 I found a programme on the computer called
Audacity and got myself ION USB tape deck and started
to convert the recordings to MP3 and uploaded them to
Mixcloud under the name Andybella and into the
Welcome to the World of FROGGY page of Facebook.
I have been overwhelmed with the response from people
who remember those times and people from around the
world that have heard of FROGGY but were too young to
see him play live. His spirit music and legacy will now live
on for everyone to enjoy. Andy Michael original FROGGY

The Royalty, Southgate was my weekly church & Froggy it’s
preacher. He lifted the spirit & put smiles on the
hundreds of faces looking up at the man giving them
great nights out. He was a true master & I, as a 17/18
year old, was in awe of his genius, effortlessly mixing
tracks in a time before quantised beats & formulaic song
arrangements. A real life game changer, blazing the way
for thousands of DJ’s after him & changing the UK’s club
scene forever.
His participation at our first Soulstice in 2007 was a proud moment for
everyone. Then we were small fry, rabbits caught in headlights when it came
to putting on an event, but we knew it would be all good & Froggy played a
blinder. We only wish he could have come back & played many more.
For somebody I only ever met a few times, the influence they had on me,
my musical taste & a cause so close to my heart, has been
unimaginable.Thank you maestro. You are still sorely missed.

As always its a honour to be asked to play the FROGMARCH
…… Froggy wasn’t just a good friend even though that was
enough he was arguably the greatest DJ the UK ever
produced. Of course there are some very esteemed names in
the world of black music DJ’s and Presenters in this country
Trevor Nelson, Chris Hill, Norman Jay, Robbie Vincent, DJ
Swing, Rodigan, Richard Searling that all in their own unique
way helped mould the UK’s soul and black music scene to the
success it is. On a personal level Froggy was the one that made me want to
be a DJ. His bravery in busting new music was simply second to none, his
mixing was on point and I never heard anyone better in the UK and to say he
is missed is the biggest understatement ever. RIP my dear friend and lets all
party like he would have wanted us too.

I knew Froggy for many years and I was very much
aware of his club and mixing work in the early days.
Whilst I actually taught myself to master the art of
mixing, it has to be said he was an inspiration for
what I wanted to learn.
I booked him a few times to guest dj at Flicks and if
I'm honest he was always my personal favorite.
An inspiration not only to me but a legion of future
DJ's.
I will always remember that day I received a call from
Frostie advising me of his passing.
Its a testament to his legacy that 10 years on the best
of the best who worked with him still want to pay
respect and tribute to the very one and only Froggy.
Gone but never forgotten.

It was at roundabout the age of 13 that me and a few mates
entered Ilford Town Hall on a Monday night . The place
was packed for the under 15s disco the
atmosphere was electric, the system was booming and
the DJ was full of energy bouncing up and down cutting
the tunes in on the beat I was mesmerised and couldnt
take my eyes off the DJ. After our first night we went
every week and made many friends who I still see today.
Froggy brought so many people together with his music he was an inspiration
to me and many others to get into mixing in fact after the first few times of
seeing him I set up a tape deck and a record deck at home and tried to beat
match with litttle success lol. As the years rolled by was very lucky to see Froggy
live at many local venues Oscars, Kings, Palais,Regency Suite and Bentleys but
for me the stand out moment was that first time at Ilford Town Hall thank you
so much for the insiration and bringing like minded people together and thanks
to Frostie and John for involving me in the Annual Frogmarch peace and love
