marble patterns in the company’s imported Italian
ranges, which were used in this exquisite home.
To achieve this look, Rocco Tile’s head tile and
bathroomware specialist, Roxanne Pillay, began by
marrying the corresponding polished and anti-slip
soft grey large-format porcelain tiles from internal
to external floor cover, creating a seamless
floor palette to work from. The elegant master
bathroom’s opulent feel was created by combining
genuine and authentic natural marble and marble-
replica imported tiles in high-end gloss and matt
finishes. This was coupled with a high-gloss main
floor and the contrast of custom-made matt-finish
herringbone shower floor mosaics.
The secondary bathrooms were given the
trendy and timeless edge with the use of classic
black and white marble-look tiles in a modern
hexagon format imported from Italy. The tiling
of the walls stopped below the ceiling, allowing
the hexagon edges to provide a distinct finishing
detail on the walls.
The final components completing the chic,
trendy and classic look was the use of the
brushed honey-gold taps, custom colour-
matched trims and the stunning freestanding
stone quartz baths and basins.
Around the pool and entertainment areas,
Rocco Tile contrasted the tones with an imported
wood-look porcelain tile that replicates the
timber deck, and added a pop of contrast and
playfulness by custom-designing Italian Art Deco
tiles into a pool coping.

T he kitchen is the centrepiece of every modern 67
home. And in 2021 its importance to family living
is just going to become greater as we all start to
embrace the joys and convenience of smart home
appliances and intelligent, timeless design.
UTTERLY ADAPTABLE
In 2021, the kitchen needs to be able to blend seamlessly with
the rest of the home while still functioning as its eye-catching
centre. It’s a feat made possible with the use of clever, timeless
design principles, as blu_line’s Philip Richards explains: “The
kitchen as art is our focus.
“We take inspiration from the practice of architecture to
continuously develop the kitchen environment and ensure the
elements in the space work as statement pieces while still
forming part of the symphony of the home. We are continuing
to pursue the integration of natural materials into the kitchen
space and push the boundaries of authentic luxury.”
Linear Concepts’ Selma Zaifoglu agrees. “Going into 2021,
kitchen design in South Africa in particular, where homes are
quite spacious, will see the kitchen evolve into more than just a
space for cooking, but rather one that complements and forms
part of the design and architectural aesthetic of the home.
“We’ve recently begun incorporating automatic doors into
our kitchen designs as a practical yet elegant solution for

FABRI THE LOOK AND FEEL
An adaptable kitchen space should also incorporate asblu_line
many future-proof design elements as possible. In 2021,
you won’t regret investing in a clutter-free yet character-
filled kitchen design, according to the team at nuuma.
“We believe that as a society we are looking for
simpler environments, yes, but also spaces with
purpose and feeling. Removing clutter and unnecessary
materials allows for spaces that effortlessly blend into
the surrounding interiors, while still having a personality
of their own.
“Colours will continue to be neutral, but will range
from softer to more dramatic tones. ‘Less is more’ is
no easy brief, but we believe this is the direction of the
kitchen of the future.”
FABRI’s Erin Braithwaite says, “Contemporary design
with a minimalist influence is here to stay thanks to its
versatility and compatibility with current architectural and
interior design styles.
“We are also seeing a resurgence of country-style
kitchens with sophisticated modern twists, such as
metallic handles and chic display units. The modern
country concept can be taken to the next level with
the use of unconventional (but incredibly stylish) colour
choices for cabinetry, such as soft greens or blue hues,
offset with crisp white countertops.”
According to Diva Cucine’s resident Italian interior
designer, Armando Ferriani of Colombini Casa, “We
expect to see a lot of soft colours in pastel shades, but
used moderately and coordinated with the accessories in
the living areas.
“Light and medium wood textures will add a sense of
warmth and comfort while the use of stone and metals is
becoming increasingly important for texture and interest.”

Smart home appliances aren’t exactly new but
they will start coming into their own in the kitchen 69

devices as toys, but increasingly expect intelligent
solutions that offer real added value.
“Smart appliances can maximise energy
efficiency and are often easier and more
convenient to use – essentially, saving the user
time, and ensuring perfect results again and again.”
As Diva Cucine’s Anthea Adam explains,
“Home automation has become more and more
part of everyday life. These days, most devices
have apps to connect the many accessories that
allow us to live and enjoy new experiences inside
the scope of our homes.
“Components have been designed to manage
the load control of the amount of energy used.
Multiple commands enable us to manage the
switching on and off of ovens and hobs, making
our cooking experiences so much more interactive
and enjoyable.”
FABRI’s Braithwaite adds, “Technology is
transforming the role of the kitchen in the modern
family home, and is already integral in the design
of the space from top to bottom.
“The concept of a smart kitchen is not
limited to increasingly smart appliances that
can be operated remotely, but also includes
developments in finishes and materials. Nanotech

that are heat-resistant, water-resistant, fingerprint-

C OVID-19 has forced us to relook at

EMBRACING NATURAL ELEMENTS
Much of 2020 was spent indoors, what with the
COVID-19 lockdown and working from home.
Marketing assistant of Bathroom Butler and
LIQUIDRED Dessie Nikolova says, “2020 saw us
spending more time indoors than ever before.
“And with the growing trend of working from home,
houses will become increasingly decorated with natural
elements and greenery such as potted trees and
plants, living walls and organic materials, to remind us
of the outdoors, bringing nature into our homes.
Plamena Danieli, creative curator of Continua, says,
“As we transition into new ways of life, we look at current
trends around biophilic bathroom designs and how you
can incorporate these soothing qualities into your space.
Think green, natural materials and light, airy spaces.”

concurs. “There has been, and continues to be, a move
towards living green. Biophilic design has its place in that
but people are also wanting to know more about what type
of products they use in their homes.
“Aside from the low-maintenance aspect of using tiles,
they are extremely durable and long-lasting. When they do
eventually degrade, there is no release of toxic compounds
into the environment, making them an attractive choice for
an ecologically minded home owner.”
Eurotrend bathrooms have developed into a

authenticity of materials.

Decorative lighting is coming into its own in 2021,
says Streamlight’s Brad Kalish. “It is not only about
how we light our homes, but what the decorative
fittings look like. Bedside lamps, chandeliers,
pendants and floor lamps should cry out for attention.
Sculptural elements in lighting objects are in vogue.”

– Radiant Lighting
The team at Radiant Lighting agrees. “Lighting
may be functional but it can also play an important
decorative role in a space. With people spending
more and more time at home these days, there’s an
emphasis on creating spaces that are beautiful to look
at. Statement lighting is going to be big in 2021.
“This is especially true for ceiling fixtures because a
bold luminaire can serve as a focal point in a room. Big
bold fixtures in unusual shapes and designs will always
attract the eye and give the room that wow factor.”
This includes your outdoor lighting options, says
Streamlight’s Kalish. “In addition to the usual way
of lighting up foliage with concealed washers, it is
now trendy to introduce decorative lighting elements

Eurolux THE SHAPE OF THINGS Radiant Lighting
Eurolux For willowlamp’s Adam Hoets,
geometric shapes are the best choice
for a statement-making piece that
suits every style. “Geometric shapes
are shapes that, even if abstract, form
beautiful lines that can go with any
modern-day aesthetic. Protruding
lights in a horizontal arrangement fit
well with minimalist, industrial
and loft styles.”
The team at Eurolux says,
“Fixtures that celebrate the
art of shapes and lines are
the right fit for contemporary,
industrial and minimalist
interiors. The geometric
trend gives a space that architectural feeling and is
especially popular for the kitchen, most notably in
>the form of pendants over the island.”

and slimmer designs. The benefits of LEDs, to name a few,
are that they have a dimmable option, they are eco-friendly
and low-energy with a longer lifespan, and cost-effective.”
The team at Eurolux adds, “We can expect an even bigger
surge in LED lamp sales in 2021 as more and more people
become familiar with their benefits, both economically
and environmentally. Look out for multifunctional fixtures
with wireless or USB charging ports that allow for bedside
charging of phones and devices.” Q

plants, says the team at SHF Home. “If it’s a natural
material, you won’t go wrong in 2021. We love this
trend for its calming effect and that it makes us miss
the outdoors a little less.”
According to Roche Bobois’s Sandrine Fanchette,
“Designs will be able to adapt for comfort and new,
unconventional materials will be used. There will be a
good balance of organic and geometric forms and pieces
will exhibit their own personality and character.”
The team at Hertex agrees, explaining, “In a
pandemic world, prioritising reassurance and wellness is
key. The focus on the home as a sanctuary is fuelling a
demand for comforting textures, nature-inspired shapes
and warmer tones.
“Homes becoming a hub for work, rest and play,
together with an increased desire to connect with
nature, make outdoor furnishing even more important.”

used across various textiles, and it pairs easily with wood,

neutral palette and natural earthy patterns, the effect is

Mobelli Furniture + Living’s Alon Sachs says, “In terms
of colour, we will still see black and white and monochrome
colour palettes coming through strongly. They bring a
feeling of simplicity and order to a space.
“And, given the curve ball 2020 threw at us, there’s no
doubt they will be seen in a variety of ways with sharp,
clean lines as well as textures and layering.”
KARE’s Karin Cawthorne adds, “Furniture has become
more than just functional – it makes a statement and
determines the look and mood of a space. Comfort and style
are the dominant factors when deciding on furniture pieces.
“Velvet and natural fabrics are still popular in 2021, and
vivid jewel colours, geometric prints as well as natural
colours will still feature as well. Art Deco, Scandinavian and
geometric shapes are the go-to trend at the moment, and
will remain so throughout the year.”
Fabric Bank’s Shara Mordt champions the local
approach to pattern in 2021, saying, “There are so many
talented local artists who are using their surroundings and
ackgrounds to develop their own unique interpretation of
what the new African aesthetic embodies.
“Stories are told in their work where shapes and colour
vary. The rich, earthy tones are what we feel will be the
