INTRODUCTION

Dato Onn Jaafar was a Malayan political figure who played a leading role in independence movement and
establishment of the federation of Malaya, forerunner of the present country of Malayan . He was the son of
Datuk Jaafar bin Haji Muhammad, the first Menteri Besar of Johor. Dato Onn Jaafar was a Malayan politician
who served as the 7th Menteri Besar of Johor from 1947 until 1950, then Malaya or currently known as
Malaysia. He was also the founder and the first President of United Malay National Organisation (UMNO)
from its formation in 1946 till 1951. He died at the age 67 at the Officer’s ward,General Hospital Johor Bahru.

Founder Of United Malay National Organisation

(UMNO)

• On 1th till 4th March 1946, 41 Malay Associtations have gathered at Sulttan Sulaiman Club to attend the first malay congress
to go against the Malayan Union showing as a threat to the privileges of the malay and the malay sultans. As the result of this
meeting,One politics party representing the Malay was established when the third congress was held at Johor Bahru on 1
May1946. Since he was very active in the Malay nationalist movement, the congress appointed him as the first president.

• On 1 June 1947, he was appointed as the Menteri Besar of Johor. Three years later, he resigned to devote his time to UMNO.

Under his leadership, UMNO succeeded in forcing the British government to dissolve the Malayan Union and replaced by the
Federation of Malaya. 1948 Federation of Malaya maintained the position of the Malay Rulers and the tightening of the
conditions of citizenship, and gave Malays privileges
• He was frustrated by what he perceived as racist policies of UMNO and suggested that party membership is open to all
residents regardless of races in Tanah Melayu.UMNO name was changed to "Organization of the United Malays National
Population Land". As the proposal was opposed, he resigned as UMNO president when the Sixth General Assembly convened
on 25 to 26 August 1951.

CAREER

Malay Union

• Malayan Union’s proposal, provided that, United Kingdom had full administration powers
over the Malay states except in areas pertaining spiritual and moral authority of the Malay
rulers which the Malay held high esteem over it.

• In particular, politicians in Johor were extremely unhappy with the willingness of Sultan Ibrahim to sign
the treaties with Harold MacMichael,and voiced out that the Sultan had violated the terms in the Johor state
constitution which explicitly forbade any foreign powers to assume legitimate control over the state.

• In the book Forgotten wars: Freedom and Revolution in sauth east Asia, in early Febuary 1946, seven
political dissidents led by Awang Bin Hassan organised a rally to protest against the Sultan's decision for
signing the tritise, and Onn Jaafar who was then serving as a district officer in Batu Pahat,was invited to
attend the rally.

CONTRIBUTION

malays .

• The main concern of RIDA is for that larger group of Malays whose
economic future is based entirely on the primary producing industries in
the rurals areas.

• The malay community will also be ensured to get the best education that
they need so that they could be excelled in the future.

Dato Sir On Jafar had dedicated and devoted his whole self to the country.He was also
considerate, peace loving, and honest person during his lifetime.Dato Sir Onn bin

Dato Jaafar had brought forward inovative changes in the history of politics.He will be
remembered forever as a symbol of Malaysian virtue.
