My heartiest congratulations to The Dance Society of Malaysia in proceeding with its 25th Solo Classical Ballet Competition at the Shantanand Auditorium, Temple of Fine Arts, Kuala Lumpur, where several of its earlier competitions had been held. I am glad to know that despite there being several other similar competitions organised by both local and foreign organisations held at the same period, we still have an enrolment of more than a hundred competitors. As you all know, TDS events are for Malaysians only. I welcome our foreign observers to Malaysia and hope they will have the opportunity to appreciate our very diverse culture from the choreographed variations. I am happy to learn that there are more awards for winners to attend overseas workshops this time. I would like to thank the sponsors and donors for their ever continuous support for without them, awards would be limited. In this year’s competition, I am indeed happy to announce that we have received a legacy from the late Oh Eng Sim, a ballet pioneer and teacher from Penang who had been one of our local adjudicator. I also like to thank contestants, dance teachers and tutors for supporting our efforts; observers for their time; the organising committee and all those who have helped in one way or another to make this event possible for our future generations, especially to the President, Mr Sunny Chan and the Sub-Committee led by Ms. Ho Kah Yeng, a big thank you. fifffflfflffiflfffflfi I would like to thank everyone being here today in making this event, our 25th Solo Classical Ballet competition possible, despite that there are 3 other ballet events being held in Kuala Lumpur simultaneously. “TDS is also my society” ~ a reminder from one of our members to me recently and I hope all of you here would agree with me too. As many of you may not know, all TDS events including competitions are for Malaysians only. This event is a platform to improve standards and techniques and to test ones’ abilities as well as to learn from each other, whilst being monitored and coached by our foreign observers. Welcome everyone, competitors, parents, teachers, friends and especially our foreign observers to fulfill the aims of the Society in continuing in raising the standards and awareness of dance in Malaysia through such competitions and providing Malaysians the opportunity to discover their own talent, gauge their own excellence in classical ballet, and most of all, to instill confidence in themselves on stage. In winning awards to participate in workshops overseas, these give them that impetus towards better technical excellence to achieve higher artistic standards and thereafter giving them confidence to compete in other competitions locally and overseas. I must thank our chairperson, Ms. Ho Kah Yeng and her dedicated team, in their thorough planning for this competition comprising Masterclasses, 2 days of Elimination of Compulsory Variations and at the Finals including Choreographed Variations for Category 1 & 2, coaching of Finalists to be conducted on 2nd & 3rd day and morning of the Finals. Unfortunately, we have not planned any workshops to be conducted after the competition, but we are considering having one later in the year. Last but not the least, I wish to inform everyone that the late Oh Eng Sim who passed away in June last year, has bequeathed a legacy to The Dance Society of Malaysia. She had been one of our adjudicators in several competitions and we will miss her. fifffflffiffflfi Andrew Elphinston commenced his ballet training at an early age of 9 with Anne Fraser, a reputable diploma teacher in Queensland, Australia who was also an RAD Examiner. He further his ballet training in the Australian Ballet School, graduating in 1998 with an Advanced Diploma of Dance and in 1999 obtained a degree in professional Dance at Elmhurst School of Dance and the Performing Arts. From hence, he began his dance career with the West Australian Ballet in 1999. Andrew was a soloist with the Royal New Zealand Ballet from 2000-2003 and a principal dancer with Sadamatsu Hamada Ballet Company from 2003-2018. He was a Guest Principal Artist for various productions with the Japan Ballet Association. Andrew’s other professional fields in teaching includes Basic Pilates, as faculty teacher at sAtsuki Ballet, and recent, as workshop guest teacher and jury since 2023 in the Pacific International Ballet competitions. As a dancer, he danced in many notable repertoire such as Prince Siegfried in Swan Lake, as the Prince in Sleeping Beauty, Nutcracker and Cinderella; as Basileo in Don Quixote, Albrecht in Giselle, Jean de Brienne in Raymonda and Conrad in Le Corsaire, to name a few repertoire. As from 2018, he is the Principal Dancer/Ballet Master of Ballet Company West Japan. ANDREW ELPHINSTON Han Kee Juan is currently the Principal of Singapore Ballet Academy. He started teaching in the 1970s and has since trained many dancers including prize winners in international ballet competitions as well as principals and soloists of internationally renowned dance companies. His dance career began in Singapore, where he started training at ten with Florrie Sinclair and then with Goh Soo Khim. Upon graduation from the Australian Ballet School, he was invited to dance with the Sydney Dance Company, then the Goh Ballet in Canada, where he was also trained by Lin Yee Goh to teach the Russian method. Additionally, he was Principal Dancer with the Indianapolis Ballet Theatre and was a Soloist with the Boston Ballet. He has directed the Arizona Ballet School, The Washington School of Ballet and was also a faculty member of the prestigious North Carolina School of the Arts and a co-founder of the American Ballet competition. With his wide experience in guest teaching and having taught internationally, he was also frequently invited to adjudicate at dance competitions. He was awarded 5 prestigious teaching awards including recipient of The Excellence in Teaching Award at UNCSA. Han Kee Juan was also named best Teacher/Coach at the Youth America Grand Prix in 2000 and 2015, and in 2008 received the Dance Teacher Award for best teacher of the year. Under his Directorship, The Washington School of Ballet was awarded the Best Youth Dance Performance by Washington DC/Metro Dance and also awarded the Outstanding School Award at the Youth America Grand Prix each year in the 6 years of competing. He was on the cover of Dance Teacher Magazine and featured as the Teacher of Men including a mention in the Singapore Encyclopedia. HAN KEE JUAN 05 25TH SOLO CLASSICAL BALLET COMPETITION 2024
fifffflffiffflfi Starting ballet at Tokyo Ballet Institute at the age of four; Tirolarn or Ting has continued her dance in Bangkok with Kanchana Jalavicharana, William Morgan and Thanpuying Varaporn Pramoj at Varaporn-Kanchana Ballet School and later with Pornpimol Kanthatham at Pornpimol-Sophatai Ballet School and Bangkok City Ballet (BCBS) under the direct guidance of Masako Hirata. She successfully completed RAD Advanced level in 1998 and completed BCBS curriculum in 2002, taking the role of “Princess Aurora” in the full-length Sleeping Beauty. She took many dance workshops held in Singapore, Japan and Malaysia. She was selected as an Outstanding Youth (Art Section) by Her Royal Highness Sirindhorn in 2003. Ting graduated from the faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University (Hons) and Chanapatana International Design Institute in 2007. She is also Certified in Ballet Teaching (CBTS) by RAD, Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) and continuing professional development in Vaganova methods annually with Pedro Carneiro. Teaching at BCBS as a full-time instructor since 2001, she also joined Bangkok City Ballet (BCB) as company member and was BCB principal dancer during 2005-2012, taking many leading roles and solos in its annual productions. She was invited as a guest dancer to various performances including “Spring Ballet Concert 2010” in Isesaki, Japan. Moreover, she was guest lecturer for the faculty of Fine and Applied Arts at Chulalongkorn University (2004-2006) and the faculty of Fine and Applied Arts at Thammasart University (2008-2010). Presently, Ting is BCB’s Ballet Education Director. TIROLARN KRITYAKIERNE Trained in the Cecchetti Method by Marjorie Clarke and Madam Lucie Saronova. Winner of the 1956 Mable Ryan Award for young dancers. Performed with the Arts Theatre Ballet Company. Presently Organiser of the International Residential Summer School and a major and overseas examiner of the Australian Branch of Cecchetti International. 2017 Recipient of the Order of Australia Medal for services to the Arts, particularly Ballet.
