How to become an IPS officer?

Serving the nation as a police officer is one of a kind feeling. This aspiration made a lot
of students choose IPS as a career. Each year lakhs of students sit for the exams to
crack it and head towards the journey of being an IPS officer.

What does the term IPS mean?

IPS stands for ‘Indian Police Service’. It is one of the three All India Services. Their
officers are being selected by both the Union Government and also through the
individual States. This service is one of the most reputed services in the protection
system of our country. If you want to contribute to society then you are welcome to join
the Indian Police Service. The main role of IPS officers is the safety and security of the
citizens of our country.

There is a different position for the IPS officer:

​ ASP- Additional Superintendent of Police
​ SP- Superintendent of Police
​ DIG- Deputy Inspector General
​ IG – Inspector General

By the first level selection of an IPS officer, the position which is allotted to them is the
rank of ASP (Additional Superintendent of Police). After that rank, they are
recommended to the next level of rank which is SP (Superintendent of Police). Hereafter,
the positions are allotted wisely. The exam which candidates have to give to become an
IPS officer is Civil Services Examination which is conducted by the UPSC.

The examination for the rank of IPS officer is one of the toughest examinations of the
Civil Services Examination. Many coaches train their candidates to clear this exam.

Criteria to become an IPS?

The one who dreams to become an IPS officer in the future has to pass the 12th
standard with first division grades. After that, they have to prepare for an exam known as
Civil Services Exam which is directed by the UPSC. The Civil Service Exam is
conducted for many other ministries too.

For the IPS exam, almost 8 lakh students petition for the IPS exam which is conducted
each year. And from these students, only 125 to 150 students are being selected for IPS.
There are many physical requirements also needed as this service is for IPS officers.
The height of the male candidates should not be less than 165 cm while the female
candidate should not be less than 150cm. if the height is less than the given
requirements then they are disqualified from the IPS officer's post.

How can I join IPS?
To join the IPS one should fill the form of Civil Services Examination, which is easily
available online. Once done, the candidate has to study for two papers. The first one is
the General Ability Test (GAT) and the second is the Civil Aptitude Test (CSAT). These
papers do not have theoretical questions, they are based on multiple-choice questions.
Every candidate is given a total of two hours to complete the test. The total marks of
both the test are 800 marks

If the candidate passes this paper, then they have to give the final examination. The
main exams have a total of 9 papers. These 9 papers are known as mains papers. If the
candidate passes all these examinations too, then finally they are in the final round that
is the IPS interview. In this exam, your mains paper marks and these interview marks
are added together for the candidate's final score.

The questions which are going to be asked to a candidate can be any random question,
as the format is not decided for the interview. The question can be related to math or
personal opinion or anything. If the candidate passes this too, then they are told to be
ready for the training session for the IPS officer.

Having the badge of an IPS officer is the most glorious feeling indeed. Lakhs of students
aspire to become IPS officers but only a handful pass every year. If you are an IPS
aspirant, all you need to do is get prepared thoroughly for your exam. Nothing should be
able to distract you from your goal.
