Brown vs. Board Education

The Brown vs. Board Education was a landmark United States
Supreme Court case. This case separated schools for white
and blacks. After the case schools and public places were
starting to desegregate and Georgia didn’t like this. They
didn’t like this so they ignored it and continued to oppose.
Brown vs. Board Education was that there should be
“sepárate but equal” doctrine for public education.

Lester Maddox

Lester Maddox was an American politician and a populist democrat.
Maddox opened the Pickrick Cafeteria near the campus of Georgia
tech. Maddox resisted the Civil Rights Bill by refusing to serve
African- Americans or blacks and anyone who suggested
integration. He went to court and he was punished and was fined
$200 per day so he decided to close the cafeteria then desegregate.

John Lewis

John Lewis is an American politician and civil rights leader. John
Lewis was the chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating
Committee (SNCC). He spent a larger portion of his career seeking
Civil Rights through voter registration. Lewis went into politics and
still holds the position of congress from the Fifth Congressional
District. Lewis worked with Dr.King in 1963.

Martin Luther King

Martin Luther King was an American Baptist minister and
activist who became the most visible spokesperson. He was a leader
in the civil rights movement. King is known for advancing civil rights
through nonviolence and civil disobedience. His Christian beliefs
and the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi helped inspire.
King won the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality
through nonviolence resistance.

March on Washington

The March on Washington was organized by two activists
John Lewis and Martin Luther King. The March to Washington
was to pressure the U.S government into desegregating. They wanted
to desegregate the armed forces and provide fair working
opportunities for African Americans. The March on Washington
movement was organized based on Franklin D. Roosevelt strong
experience in grassroots and union organizing.

Montgomery Bus Boycott

The Montgomery bus boycott was a political and social
protest campaign. Supreme Court decision that declared
the Alabama and Montgomery laws that segregated buses
were unconstitutional. It was a seminal event in the civil
rights movement. The U.S. Supreme Court ultimately ordered
Montgomery to integrate its bus system. The leaders of the
boycott, a young pastor named Martin Luther King, Jr., emerged
as a prominent leader of the American civil rights movement.

SNCC

SNCC was an important element in the struggle for civil rights.
The SNCC stands for Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.
The SNCC was one of the major civil rights organizations of the
1960’s. Julian Bond was the SNCC ‘s communications director.
The purpose for this organization was on orchestrating peaceful,
nonviolent protest. SNCC may be best known for its community
organizing, including voter registration, freedom schools, and
localized direct action all over the country.

Albany Movement

The Albany movement was a desegregation and voter’s
rights. Albany’s black middle class did not initially support
the protests. The Albany movement is deemed by some as a
failure due to its unsuccessful attempt at desegregating
public spaces. The Albany Movement coalition, there had
been neither formal organized protests against the segregated
public facilities in Albany.

Maynard Jackson

In 1973, Maynard Jackson won the Mayoral election. He was an
American politician and attorney from Georgia, a member of
the Democratic Party. He served three terms making him the
second longest-serving mayor of Atlanta. He is notable also
for public works projects, primarily the new Maynard H.
Jackson International terminal at the Atlanta airport. William
B. Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport was re-named
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to honor his
service to the expansion of the airport.

Andrew Young

Andrew Young served in Georgia as a Congressman, ambassador,
and major of Atlanta. He helped organize voter registration and
desegregation campaigns. Andrew Young became the first African
American since reconstructor in 1972. His career brought the Olympic
games to Atlanta and Georgia. Young has founded or served in a large
number of organizations working on issues of public policy and
political lobbying.

Jimmy Carter

Jimmy Carter was a state senator, governor, and the only person from
Georgia to be elected president. He is also a winner of the Nobel Peace
Prize and the second Georgian to win the award. As a senator, Carter
advocated for education and served as chairman of the senate
education committee. Carter’s successes and failures as president are
well documented. After losing the 1980 presidential election, Carter
returned to Georgia where he founded the Carter center.

1996 Olympic Games

In 1996 the state of Georgia hosted the Olympic Games. The Olympic Games
brought to the state of Georgia the creation of centennial Olympic park.
More than 10,000 athletes from 197 National Olympic Committees competed
in 26 sports. The 1996 Summer Olympics were considered to be financially
successful, due to record revenue from sponsorship deals and broadcast
rights among other factors.

Immigration

Most of Georgia’s immigrants came from Latin America. There was a
difference between a foreign-born and being an American. A foreign-
born is that you are a immigrant and an American is from that state that
you belong and were you live. Legal immigrants communities provide
restaurants, grocery stores, neighborhoods shops, and manual labor.
Immigrant communities an add to a local area by these businesses line
commercial streets statewide and help define communities local character.

Georgia’s Economy

Georgia‘s economy increased throw having people coming from
different towns. The money was spent by fixing roads and other
events. The money was also use for commercial and other purposes
so that’s why Georgia economy increased.

Tourism

Tourism generated about $59 billion and more than $3 billion in
Taxes. Tourism was also used to do commercial and there
tourism increased because of all they do. Tourism in Georgia is
an increasingly important component of the country’s economy.
