Inaugural event a hit
City of Hot Springs Police Department
The Hot Springs Police
Department (HSPD) helped
make 25 children’s Christmases
brighter with the first annual
Shop with a Hot Springs Cop
event on December 7. HSPD
coordinated with area schools
to select 25 kids who are in need
this year, and each child was
allotted $200 to spend on clothes,
toys, and whatever else the child
wanted. An officer was paired
with each child for the shopping
experience. The event was made
possible by a $5,000 grant from
the Walmart on Albert Pike
Road. “We would like to thank
Walmart Hot Springs – Albert
Pike Road, store manager Coy
Jackson and his team. Thank
you for opening your doors and
heart for the children of our community." To see more photos from this event and others from HSPD, visit (and like)

Fruit tree varieties added at Family Park
Two employees of
Bemis Tree Farm and
City Urban Forester
Allen Bates made
quick work of planting
23 trees at Family
Park Thursday. These
additions were to
replace trees which
were cut per a Federal
Aviation Administration
(FAA) safety order to
remove hilltop trees
exceeding the FAA's
height requirement
in the vicinity of the
airport. Pecan trees
were put at the lower
level of the park and
will add shade for the Urban Forester Allen Bates, right, works with Bemis Tree Farm staff to
volleyball area. Shorter lay out and plant fruit trees along the walking path.
fruit trees were put on
the hill, and include
apple, pear, pawpaw, fig and persimmon. Bates explained the planning
that went into what types of trees would be added, and when they would
be planted. Disease-resistant varieties were selected to minimize spraying.
Two varieties of apple and pear trees were chosen to allow for cross-
pollination. The trees were added this time of year to allow for the roots to
get established before the dry and hot periods coming next summer.
The fruit trees on the Family Park hill will stay below FAA
regulations even when they reach full height.
