FALL IS IN THE AIR

City of Hot Springs

Leaves on sidewalks

This time of year, Hot Springs is
covered with a beautiful array
of colors. Rex Tankersley, of the
City’s Public Works Department,
is pictured clearing the City Hall
sidewalks of golden Lacebark
Elm leaves before one of the
City’s street sweepers collects
them. Each Friday morning this
time of year starting at around
7 a.m., Tankersley and the
street sweeper clear leaves on
the downtown Central Avenue
sidewalks.

Residents can have their bagged
leaves picked up every other
week by Solid Waste. The leaf/
mulch truck runs in conjunction
with the recycling schedule.
There is a limit of 50 black bags per pickup. Sticks should be bundled and placed beside the bags. If there is a large
quantity of sticks (i.e., a pickup-truck load), a call should be made to 501-321-6911 to schedule a separate CAPS pickup.

Solid Waste supports community litter pick-up efforts

Solid Waste has provided safety vests, trash pickers and trash bags to a group planning to do a litter patrol on West
Mountain Trail between Pecan Street and Prospect Avenue on Saturday, November 23. “Thank you, Lacy Mayfield and
your group, for taking this initiative and thinking outside the box,” said Atkinson.

The Adopt-A-City Street Program provides volunteer public involvement in controlling litter along Hot Springs’ streets.
Generally, a two- to four-block section of a City street is adopted with an agreement that litter be picked up at least six
times a year by the responsible party for a minimum of a two-year period. For more information about the program, visit
www.cityhs.net/adopt-a-street or call 501-321-6911.

Transfer Station improvements complete

Compactor Number 1 is back in service at the Transfer Station. The new windows were also installed in the two booths
inside the station, and power washing, painting and overall sprucing up of the building was recently completed.

Sketch of roundabout at Hwy 5/7 junction

A 200-foot diameter roundabout will be constructed
at the intersection of Highway 5 and Highway 7 as a
part of the ArDOT project to widen Highway 7 from
this junction south to Fox Pass Cutoff. The current
businesses at the junction and the current highway
location are shown in red on the sketch at right. Both
businesses, the Shell gas station and Trophies Corner,
will be demolished.

The widening of the highway will also require the
relocation of the City of Hot Springs’ utilities along
the route, which includes approximately 2 miles
of 12” water main and 8” gravity sewer main, with
manholes. There is also approximately 2 miles of 8”
sewer force main that will need to be relocated.

The ArDOT project will also feature a center turn lane,
two traffic lanes, bikes lanes, curbs and sidewalks and a new traffic signal at the north end of Fountain Lake School.

Garver Engineers, Inc., from North Little Rock, designed the project for the City. The construction contract will go out to
bid on November 18. Five general contractors attended the mandatory pre-bid meeting. ArDOT will reimburse the City
for approximately 66% of the construction costs as the current location of the utility mains are outside the current right-of-
way (ROW), yet will be inside the widened ROW. Construction is expected to start in January 2020.
