The Butterfly

I have a favourite tree in my backyard, which
I take care of every day. It’s still young.

On a Monday, I see something unusual on my tree.
There is a small egg sticking to a leaf.

เชาวันจันทรวันหนึ่ง ผมเห็นมีอะไรแปลกประหลาดอยูบนตนไมของผม ผมเห็น
ไขใ บเลก็ ๆ ตดิ อยูที่ใบไมใ บหน่ึง

I want to know what animal lays the egg.
I’ll keep it and see what it will be.

ผมอยากรูจริง ๆ เลยวา สัตวอะไรกันนะท่ีมาวางไขเอาไว ถาอยางน้ัน ผมจะ

I see no egg on Tuesday.
There is a tiny caterpillar instead.
It must be from the egg.

พอถึงวันองั คารผมไมเ หน็ ไขอีกแลว แตเ ห็นหนอนตัวเล็ก ๆ แทน มนั ตองออก

By the end of the day, two leaves on my tree are
gone.
And by Thursday, half the leaves are gone! I can
see that the caterpillar looks fatter and healthier.

On Saturday, I take my dad to see my caterpillar.
He says the caterpillar will become a beautiful
butterfly. But I don’t know how this fat caterpillar
can grow wings and fly!

By next Monday, I can’t find the caterpillar.
But there is something else on the tree.

The caterpillar has turned into a cocoon. It sticks
between the twigs without moving.

In the afternoon of that day, it starts to rain.
I am afraid the cocoon might get wet.
My mom says it will be all right, but I am still
worried.

So, I put a shelter over the cocoon in the tree.
The shelter is made of four sticks and a tray from
the kitchen. The little cocoon might feel better,
I think.

The sun shines brightly now. I ask mom and dad to
go to see the cocoon with me. When I remove the
shelter, we can see that something is moving inside
the cocoon.

Is it going to be a butterfly?

Yes, it is! Its colourful wings look like those painted
by a smart artist. When I tell my mom and dad that
I heard it say thank you to me, they smile at me.

Materials
- A small fish tank, or a clear plastic box
- A piece of thin white cloth
- Scotch tape

What to do
- Find a caterpillar or a butterfly egg from a plant.
- Cut the branch where you find the caterpillar.
- Put the whole branch into a clear box and close it with thin
cloth by using the scotch tape.
- Add new leaves from the same tree every day.
