1. President’s Address

The President welcomed and thanked all MSSS members for attending the 49th MSSS
Annual General Meeting. The President highlighted several important points, including
taking precautions and adhering to SOP during the Covid-19 pandemic. In the opening
remarks, several essential topics from the Annual Report was discussed including making
MSSS activities seen by IUSS and the event conducted during the 2019/2020 session.

2. Minutes of the 48th Annual General Meeting (AGM)

The minutes were accepted with minor amendments (typing error) on activities. The
motion was proposed by Mr. M Zamir A Rasid and seconded by Dr Wan Rasidah Wan A
Kadir.

3. Annual Report 2019/2020

The annual report was presented by Dr Daljit Singh A/L Karam Singh as Honorary
Secretary and was accepted with notation. The motion was proposed by Dr M Firdaus
Sulaiman and seconded by Dr Wan Rasidah Wan A Kadir.

4. Financial Report 2019

The financial report was presented by Honorary Treasurer Dr Ali Tan Kee Zuan (UPM). Dr
Ali highlighted issues regarding higher expenses with lower revenue generated. The
higher expenses were due to various activities carried out during the 2019/2020 session,
e.g. World Soil Day Program by various agencies. Suggestions for future plans of
increasing revenue include the implementation of fees for publication in the MJSS. The
report was accepted with notation. The motion was proposed by Dr Jeyanny Vijayanathan
and seconded by Dr Adibah Mohd Amin.

5. Election of Management Committee for the 2020/2021 Session.

Dr Wan Rasidah Abdul Kadir chaired the election process.

6. Other Matters

6.1. MSSS Membership
Information on MSSS membership has been constantly updated. Letters of yearly
fee collection will be sent out to all members and to update the latest status of all
members.

6.2. MSSS Publication
MSSS Publication contributed to higher expenditure due to proofreading and printing
fees. There was a suggestion to include publication fees and this will be discussed
among committee members.

6.3. Interaction with Regional and Professional Organization
ESAFS 2021 has been officially announced and will be held on 15-19 November
2021 in Kuala Lumpur. It is hoped that newly elected committee members will be
ready and early preparation works needs to be done immediately.

6.4. MSSS Activities
6.4.1. World Soil Day
WSD will be held every 5 December 2020. It is suggested that all agencies
and the private sector play a role to contribute to the events, such as public
talk, community engagement, and technical visits.

6.4.2. Soil Familiarization
Soil Familiarization Tour 2021 will be organized by MSSS and the Department
of Agriculture in South Kelantan on 2-3 March 2021.

2.0 Memberships

For 2020/2021 session, 14 applications for ordinary members were approved by the MSSS
Management Committee. A complete list of the MSSS members is available in the MSSS
website (http://msss.com.my/members.php ).

2.1 Annual Subscription

The society’s annual fee is RM50.00 per year for ordinary and associate members and will
cover the membership in the International Union of Soil Science and Balai Ikhtisas Malaysia
(BIM). For new members, an additional RM40.00 will be collected as an entrance fee. The
fee for life membership is still maintained at RM400.00.

2.2 New MSSS Account

MSSS Honorary Treasurer has opened a new MSSS account at CIMB UPM branch.
Signatories of the Account are the Treasurer, President, Vice President and Secretary. The

existing bank account at Maybank Ampang Park Branch will remain for the time being.MSSS
is in the process to cash out the fixed deposit and close Maybank current account, and transfer
to a new bank account at CIMB UPM branch.

3.0 Society’s Activities

3.1 Conference, seminars and forums

3.1.1 Soil Science Conference of Malaysia 2020

The Soil Science Conference of Malaysia (SOILS 2020) was held on 6 – 8th October 2020 at
Holiday Villa Johor Bharu City Centre, Johor. The event was jointly organized by the
Malaysian Society of Soil Science and the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM). SOILS
2020 is MSSS first attempt at conducting a hybrid conference combining physical and online
attendance during the event. With a theme of “Soil Management Towards Plant Productivity
& Environmental Sustainability”, this conference was succeeded in having more than 80 local
participants. In contrast, our international participants joined via the Online Webinar Platform.
There were 21 oral presentations and 58 posters, and an exhibition of products, services and
latest technologies by 13 companies.

3.2 Publication

3.2.1 Malaysian Journal of Soil Science (MJSS)

MJSS Vol. 25 (2021) is now available online. At present, all the MJSS publications from
volume 1 to 25 published from 1997 until 2021 are also available online at MSSS website
http://msss.com.my/mjss.php. Our Malaysian Journal of Soil Science (MJSS) is also listed in
CrossRef Scopus Indexed with annual fees. Starting from 2021, MSSS starts to implement
charges for the publishing process. Currently, MSSS member is free of charge, the local
corresponding author who is a non-MSSS member - RM150, and international corresponding
author (Non-Malaysian) - USD70.

3.2.2 Newsletter

Two issues of the MSSS Newsletter were published in December 2020 and July 2021. The
newsletters were handed out to all MSSS members via email. The digital copy was also
posted MSSS Webpage and Facebook page and can be downloaded at MSSS Official
Webpage http://msss.com.my/newsletters.php.

3.3 Education Fund

3.3.1 Soil Science Award

The MSSS best student award in soil science (RM1,000 and certificate) was given to Miss Siti
Mursidah Binti Aziz, Bachelor Sains Pertanian UPM.

3.3.2 Travel Grants
No travel grants were awarded for 2020/2021.

3.3.3 School Students Award
No School students were awarded for 2020/2021.

3.3.4 Post-Graduate Thesis Award (PGTA)

MSSS award for the post-graduate thesis will be awarded to research scholars of MSc or PhD
in the field of soil science. The award consists of RM 1,000 monetary prize and a certificate.
Eligible applicants during the period of 1/1/2020 until 31/12/2020 can provide their submission
by 30 September 2021.

3.4 Fellow Award

MSSS Management Committee has agreed to appoint Dr Xaviar Arulandoo as MSSS Fellow
Member. The decision was also supported and endorsed by Prof Dr Shamsuddin Jusop.

3.5 Affiliation to other Organizations

MSSS is affiliated to BIM (Balai Ikhtisas Malaysia). MSSS President Dr Rosazlin Abdullah has
been appointed as an Exco Member for term 2021/2022 on 15 July 2021. BIM was set up with
the assistance of the Commonwealth Foundation in the year 1973 to serve as the umbrella
body for all professions recognized by legislative Acts of Parliament in Malaysia.

3.6 Interaction with Regional and Professional Organization

3.6.1 The East and Southeast Asia Federation of Soil Science Societies (ESAFS)

Malaysia gained the majority vote to host the next conference, the 15th International
Conference of ESAFS2021 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. However, while the whole world is still
combating the Covid-19 pandemic, the ESAFS2021 was postponed to 22-26th August 2022.
The official website and poster are yet to be announced.

3.6.2 Regional Soil Partnership Working Group

MSSS has discussed with the Department of Agriculture Malaysia (DOA) about the Malaysian
focal point in coordinating the pillars’ reporting to FAO on the Regional Soil Partnership
Working Group. DOA has agreed to work together with MSSS.

3.6.3 International Conference – 7th APIC 2022

MSSS was invited as a collaborator for the 7th Asian PGPR International Conference for
Sustainable Agriculture 2022 on the 23-25th August 2022. MSSS will give full support for the
success of this event.

3.7 Activities by Sub-committee

3.7.1 Green Campus Program from UCYP, Pahang

The University College of Yayasan Pahang invited MSSS to join the Green Campus Program
“Keep Soil Alive, Protect Soil Biodiversity” on 5 December 2020 at the UCYP Main Campus,
Tanjung Lumpur Kuantan. During the event, MSSS has donated 15 ornamental trees for the
event.

3.7.2 World Soil Day 2020

MSSS hosted its first-ever Online Webinar for the World Soil Day 2020 celebration. This event
was held on 7 December 2020 and was themed “Keep soil alive, protect soil biodiversity”.
MSSS was honoured to have En Eliyas bin Saad, Deputy Director-General from the
Department of Agriculture Malaysia, for the Opening Remarks. The webinar sessions were
conducted by four representatives, Datin Dr Rosenani Abu Bakar (Biochar Malaysian
Association), Dr Anizan Isahak (Agroecology Society SRI-Mas), Pn Aini Zakaria
(Permaculture Association Malaysia), and En Zulkarnain Haidzir (Independent Farmer). The
success of the event was portrayed by the number of participants of over 340 individuals.

3.7.3 International Webinar 2020

MSSS organized an International Webinar 2020 themed Soil: Forestry and Environment on
22 December 2020. Three invited speakers delivered their speeches, including Dr
Muhammad Firdaus Abdul Karim (UMK), Mr Haidar Fari Afitya (UPN “Veteran, East Java),
and Dr Daljir Singh Karam Singh (UPM). The webinar was moderated by MSSS Vice
President Dr Jeyanny Vijiyanathan from FRIM and successfully attracted 185 participants.

3.7.4 MSSS 50th Anniversary Celebration Month

2021 marks the 50th anniversary of the Malaysian Society of Soil Science (MSSS),
established on 2 April 1971. This year, despite restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic,
MSSS managed to host several activities using the Online Webinar Platform. MSSS members
and the public were delighted to join four webinar sessions and three contests over the month
of April 2021.

1) Pre-Launch of MSSS 50th Anniversary Celebration Month

The first Pre-Launching event started with a webinar session officiated by the Director-
General of the Department of Agriculture Malaysia, YBhg Datuk Mohd Nasir Warris.
This was followed by a talk from our prestigious Fellow Member and MSSS Past

President, Dr Mohd Khanif Yusop, discussing “Enhancing Soil Carrying Capacity for
Food Security and Environmental Sustainability”.

2) National Webinar

The next series was a webinar session on “The Roles of Biofertilizer in Sustainable
Agriculture” by four speakers, Assoc. Prof Dr Amir Hamzah Ahmad Ghazali from USM,
Mrs Nor Fadilah Abd Halim from MARDI, Dr Md Hoirul Azri Ponari from IIUM, and Mr
Muhamad Nazri Lokman from the private sector. Dr John Keen Chubo from UPMKB
moderated the session.

3) International Webinar

The third webinar series was an International Webinar entitled “Strategic Partnership
towards Sustainable Soil Management”. The special invited speaker was from the
Food and Agriculture Organization FAO, Dr Maria Konyushkova, accompanied by
MSSS Fellow from the Forest Research Institute Malaysia, Dr Wan Rasidah Kadir.
The moderator was none other than MSSS Vice President Dr Jeyanny Vijayanathan.

4) Grand Ceremony of MSSS 50th Anniversary Celebration

The Grand Ceremony of the MSSS Golden Jubilee Celebration was officiated on 2
April 2021 virtually. MSSS was very honoured to have the Deputy Minister of
Agriculture and Food Industries II, YB Dato’ Haji Che Abdullah bin Mat Nawi
addressing the opening remarks of this event. The webinar forum entitled “Past,
Present, and Future of Soil Science in Malaysia” was supported by our distinguished
MSSS fellow members, including Prof Dr Shamsuddin Jusop, Dr Paramananthan
Selliah, Dr Ghulam Mohammed Hashim, and Dr Hj Zin Zawawi Zakaria. 350
participants successfully joined the event to support this program.

5) Soil Contest

We launched three contests during the golden jubilee month celebration: the Soil
Photography Contest, Soil Poetry Contest, and the Soil Short Essay contest. The
event winners were announced during the Grand Ceremony session and also
published in our Newsletter.

3.7.5 MSSS 50th Pre-AGM Talk

MSSS managed to invite YBhg. Dato’ Haslina Binti Abdul Hamid, Secretary-General of the
Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries (MAFI), to give her welcoming speech and to
address the “New Agriculture Policy Directions: Post-National Agrofood Policy” as part of
MSSS 50th AGM.

3.8 MSSS Homepage and Social Media
Members and the public can access MSSS information on our official website at
http://msss.com.my/. The homepage is an essential communication tool for the latest MSSS
activities, MSSS Journal, announcements and updates. MSSS also took the opportunity to
join the Facebook platform (https://www.facebook.com/groups/soilsciencemalaysia) for more
accessible outreach to the public.
3.9 MSSS Room
The MSSS room is located at the Department of Land Management, Faculty of Agriculture,
UPM, and all the journals, proceedings, and books were kept in the MSSS room. Details of
journals, proceedings, and books were compiled and advertised for sale (Appendix 2).
