"THE TRAVELER"
"MEMORIES LEAVE FOOTPRINTS"
Lois Dutey Calhoun
The traveler was back in Kentucky. The place where the old home
place was, as was also his Mother's old home place, which was just
down the road. Back when he was a child, the road was a dirt road,
and folks all had gardens, and walked almost everywhere they went.
It was common for him and is family to walk the one mile to church
on the West Virginia side, or the stores or post office that were
located there. He had family on both sides of the river. He had an
uncle, which was his mother's brother, who lived in the old place
where she was born and raised, along with his wife and some of their
children who were still home, and not married as yet. He often would
go there, and spend time with his cousins and spend the night many
times. His uncle Dennis would always be out in his garden working, if
in the Spring, he would be picking peas, which he always raised, or
he would be feeding the big bull in the pen or taking care of the
chickens. He recalled a sight that remained in his mind, of his Aunt
Lassie, sitting and ironing clothes on the porch. He often wondered
how she could sit and do that, but it was the way she always did her
ironing. There was often an old fashioned Apple Stack cake in her
dining room, and of course a bucket of water with a dipper resting in
it, sitting on the slat shelf on the railing of the porch. On the other
little porch, which was called the front porch, (when his Mother was
young, they all traveled by boat across the river, and that was where
both the top and lower porches faced, with a swing on one side, and
water barrels on either side.) He also recalled the little farm where he
was raised. There were gardens located everywhere. Over on the
river banks, some behind the large yard, and some all across the
property on the other side. On one end of that side, were two
graves. Headstones and a fence around them marked their location.
When he was small, he recalled folks coming and decorating them on
"Decoration Day" ( Memorial Day as it is now called.) The traveler
knew almost everyone who lived on that side of Nolan. To his family,
they were all neighbors. There were always some kids to play with,
after the chores were done, you could always see folks sitting on
their front porches near the edge of night. Fire flies being put in
mason jars, along with the kids running and hiding and playing hide
and seek, with only the light from the windows showing them the
best places to hide.
Yes, these were my childhood memories. (thought the
traveler,) But the greatest memory he had was the ones of when
there was just his Mother and himself. They lived in a small house,
and very little money came in, yet his Mother with God's help, made
it work. She had taught school for over 37 years, but as things turned
out, she had to live on meager affair. God's grace was so evident in
her life, and in his, although at the time, he was unaware of the
lessons God was teaching him. How to be thankful for what we have.
The traveler began thinking: "There are many rich folks in this world,
with money, and all they ever dreamed of having, but the greatest
treasure of them all, Mother had. She had God on her side, and in her
heart." He thought: “I now have that same grace from God. Not that I
am someone special, in the way the world looks at folks, but to God, I
belong to Him, as did Mother." Although she was gone now, her
beacon of light is still so bright, it still shines in the deepest crevice of
the traveler’s heart. She has left him with a treasure he would always
cherish; knowing God and His love. As he sat at his desk he looked
out at the bright blue sky, and the trees that were changing their
colors, and thought: "Her example was one that I will always know
and thank God for it having been a gift from Him. I was honored to be
her son." I (Lois C.) have said all this to make one point. Our life will
leave memories to those who know us, whether they be good or bad.
(At the beginning I mentioned that the traveler had family on both
sides of the river (Tug). Now all his siblings and Mother was on the
other side of the River of Life, along with so many other family and
friends. That should be all our destination: Home in Heaven. It is
mine.) My whole heart’s desire is to leave an example to my family
and friends, as a woman who loved God and strived to please Him. By
doing that, maybe they will want what I have. "Peace in the precious
arms of God."
There was a mistake in this article I posted in July – here is
the corrected version.
