THE TRAVELER
"HOMECOMING"
August is a time of gathering crops and storing for winter. It is usually the
hottest month of the year. Yet, in the hottest of times, we gather and make
ready for cold times to come. We set aside and plan so we can have what is
needed to carry us through what lies ahead. It is a time of bounty. God made
seasons for a reason. Each to follow in the order they are needed to supply us
with what we need in this life. It is up to us to plant, and gather and then reap
the harvest. In this month a lot of churches have their homecomings. Our
ancestors celebrated the harvest in Thanksgiving to God and had a feast to
make it a special time in their lives. A time set aside to thank God for His
mercies and for giving them what they needed. No, this is not Thanksgiving,
since it is not November, but it is a time for thanking God for the bounty He
has blessed us with. The ending of a season of planting and gathering what He
blessed us with.
The reason churches gather together for a Homecoming is to celebrate God's
goodness and set aside a time to gather together after a year of working and
planning, and then to recognize God's goodness and blessing towards them. A
time for family and friends to gather together and be able to give God praise
for His blessings in their lives. A time of renewing old friendships where some
have not seen each other in a long time. A time to rejoice together in the
recognition that God has blessed them and their loved ones. A time of singing
songs of praise, and hearing the messages God gives the preacher to deliver
to those present. God knows each heart and will send what is needed to
renew them and remind them of His great love and peace and joy. During this
special worship service, be sure to allow God's sweet Spirit to lead you. Obey
the Spirit and give God the praise He so richly deserves. We are reminded in
so many scriptures we are to give Him praise. Here are a few of the many
where we are to give Him praise in church, or elsewhere; Hebrews 13:15 "By
him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the
fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name. “Psalms 150:1 "Praise ye the LORD.
Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power." Psalms
147:1 "Praise ye the LORD: for it is good to sing praises unto our God; for it is
pleasant; and praise is comely." After feasting on God's Word, there is usually
a big (feast) meal planned, so everyone can sit together and eat and renew
fellowships and just let other know you love them and have missed them
throughout the year, or maybe years that it has been since you last were able
to fellowship with each other. Yes, it takes work to get it all together to be
able to do this, but those who love the Lord will say it is a work of love.
Homecoming is a word that reminds me of our Homecoming in the future,
when Christ will come on the clouds of Glory and call our names. Those of us
who have made ourselves ready will go back with Him, and He will present us
to God the Father, and hand all authority back to Him, so God will be all in all.
That Homecoming is the one our homecomings we have at church are to
represent. A time of renewing fellowship with those gone before, and a time
to thank God for all He has done for us. Yes, we enjoy our Homecomings here
on this side of the "River", but the one that counts is the one on the other
side of the "River." Will you be present at that one?
COMMENT: God has blessed us all more than we could ever begin to thank
Him for, but we each need to give Him praise every chance we can. There will
be a great Homecoming one day, and we need to be prepared to go back with
Christ when He comes after us. Once He leaves the mercy seat in Heaven,
there will be no time to repent then. It will be harvest time, and it will depend
on how you have lived in this life whether it was for God, or for yourselves.
You cannot reap if you have not planted
seeds that come from being born again and
living a holy life for God. Are you ready for
the Homecoming?
We went to You tube and found this old
song. To some it is sad, but it is one we heard
as a child, and remember our Mother singing
it. She is no longer able to go to Nolan FWB
Church Homecoming, because she has
already gone on over Home. She used to live
across the river, (Tug) but now she lives
across the "River." (River of Life.) Her work on
earth is done, but one day I will be with her
again to give God praise in His House, and
thank Him for the blessings He has filled my
life with. Here is the song I love so dearly, and I dedicate it to my Mother's
memory: Virginia Dutey. Here is the song: "PRECIOUS MEMORIES” and it is
sung by "PATTY LOVELESS." I thank God for folks who allow us to go to You
Tube to hear them sing praises to God. To all of you there, who are at my old
Home church, I want say we may not get to see each other much on this side
of the River, but we can visit without end over on the other side. May God
bless you with a wonderful Homecoming. Lois C.
