Art and culture gives us a feeling of pride, boosting ecstasy, aesthetics,

creativity, fostering friendship and understanding among human. The Ministry
of Culture of Thailand was established as the main organization in charge of
preservation, conservation and development of Thai traditions, art and culture
in various dimensions; following the 20-year National Strategic Plan: “Culture
brings out the best in people, society, income, positive image and national
dignity in the global stage.”
The Ministry of Culture is responsible for the development of Thai art in
cooperation with various sectors both at the national and international levels.
Contemporary art of Thailand has been recognized by wider foreign audiences
through participation continually in world art events and exhibitions.
The exhibition entitled International Art Exchange Show Thailand – USA 2020
is another effort for a better understanding and appreciation of contemporary Thai
art in the eyes of the international community.
On behalf of the Ministry of Culture, I would like to express my thankfulness to
the Honorable Founder Artist, Thai National Artists, foreign artists, Department
of Cultural Promotion, LA Artcore, Thai Art Council USA, and everyone contributed
in supporting the exhibition to its success. I hope that this art exhibition will be
beneficial to contemporary art circle, particularly the young ones.

The Ninth International Exchange between Thailand and LA Artcore marks a special

celebration. The 2020 exchange sets a precedent in that it marks the first exchange
organized since the passing of our beloved LA Artcore Director of 40 years, Lydia
Takeshita, last year. In light of this, the organization of this exchange was handed
to former LA Artcore VP Gary Kious, by Dr. Kamol Tassananchalee. He is assisted
by Edem Elesh, a long time participant of these exchange shows to Thailand, and
member of the Board of Directors LA Artcore. What does this signify? It signifies a
unique celebration, despite our mourning the loss of Lydia, of the continuity of these
exchange programs between our two countries. It will demonstrate a homage to
tradition and, more importantly, an eye to the future, which we all feel is in keeping
with Lyidia’s, and Dr. Kamol’s, vision of the essence of cultural and artistic exchange.
Participating in the exchange show scheduled for January 27th – February 10th, 2020
includes the following artists: Edem Elesh, James Finnegan, Astrid Francis, Josh
Friedman, Anna Friesen, Gary Kious, Velda Ishizaki, Ann Phong, and two special
guests, Carla Viperelli, our Italian participant and LA Artcore-Italy exchange program
coordinator, and Joanna Sokolowska, our Polish participant, and previous
Poland-Thailand exchange member.
On behalf of the LA Artcore the Board of Directors, we extend our profound
appreciation to Dr. Kamol for his ongoing programming efforts at various Thai Cultural
Centers and workshop locations, and for providing his unparalleled hospitality
to our artists, representatives, and cultural ambassadors.

Thai Art Council USA is in cooperation with Department

of Promotion Culture and LA Artcore to organize “International
Exchange Show Thailand – USA 2020.” The project aims to exchange
arts between different art galleries in different countries, to enhance
opportunities and to promote Thai artists to the world. It has
been started for more than 2 decades and it is reaching to wider
audiences. This year (2020), the board has selected 8 American
artists with 2 special guests from Europe, Italian and Polish
Artists. The international artists will come to Thailand in late
January 2020. They will join the art exhibition and other workshops
provided together with many Thai National Artists and a very
special guest, honorable founder artist, Mr. Chuan Leekpai,
at Thailand Cultural Centre, Bangkok. Later on, in June
2020, Thai artists will travel to the United States of America
and join art exhibition which will be held at LA Artcore Union
Center for the Arts and LA Artcore Brewery Annex. I hope this
project would strengthen our valuable friendship and prolonged.

Art is recognized as one of the most significant and the best windows to

see through other cultures. Art is valuable and beneficial to human beings.
Art is also a mean to exchange and to understand cultural diversity. Offering
opportunity for artists from different countries to meet, exchange ideas and work
together will enhance experiences of each artist and continually strengthen
relationship between countries.
The Department of Cultural Promotion, Ministry of Culture of Thailand, is in
cooperation with LA Artcore Center for the Arts, Los Angeles, and Thai Art
Council USA to organize art activity and exhibition “International Art Exchange
Show Thailand – USA 2020” at Thailand Cultural Centre and LA Artcore Center
for the Arts. Their aims are to showcase works of Founder of Artist, Thai National
Artists in Visual Arts, eminent American artists, and two special participants
from Italian Republic and the Republic of Poland, as well as to widen artistic
visions and creativities of children and youths to develop their skills into world
stage in future.
On behalf of the Department of Cultural Promotion, Ministry of Culture of
Thailand, I would like to thank Honorable Founder Artist, Mr. Chuan Leekpai,
Thai National Artists, artists from LA Artcore, and our special guests from overseas,
who have participated the International Art Exchange Show Thailand – USA
2020. I hope it will further strengthen relationship between Thailand and the

ANNA FRIESEN isopropyl alcohol on Duralar; combined photographs and Polaroid Lifts; colored
pencil, and soot on clayboard. Her current work is inspired by the dynamic
International Artist processes of life, beginning and end; the natural cycle of having form and
relinquishing form. She employs lines and gestures to create an expressive image
which is drawn and painted on front and back of translucent Duralar or acrylic on
canvas.

03International Artists I’m a non-representational painter of recent vintage. I do not endeavor to

ASTRID FRANCIS depict things as they are in this world, but rather what I feel or imagine they
might be in some other world. In this work, at its very basic level, it is the
International Artist celebration of paint on a surface and the quirky, unexpected beautiful results that
that can produce. But I don’t stop there. The resulting shapes and textures I see
suggest to me what is in there, and I bring it out in wildly imaginative characters
and creatures. There is a lot of whimsy and humor in these pieces which
challenges you not to smile when viewing this work. You will also want to make
your own assumptions about what, exactly, you are looking at.

04International Artists I’m interested in movement. I make paintings, drawings and video-animations.

CARLA VIPARELLI I like to put together still pictures and moving pictures. Both are equally
important. None can replace the other. For me an art project is a whole process,
International Artist where each item leads to another. A sort of mathematic set whose elements are
interrelated and all the components are equally important. I start from one or
two drawings to build an animation, and when it’s finished, I come back to the
painting. In fact, during the construction of an animation there are many technical
steps (frames, layers, layers masks) that are not visible in the final product. I save
all this “hidden” steps and I paint them, instead of erasing them. I give them an
independent and visible life. I close the loop: I make visible the invisible.

05International Artists His art encompasses mixed media painting, sculpture, installation, drawing

EDEM ELESH and music composition. Under his modus operandi banner of “Process and
Providence”, Edem Elesh continues on his artistic journey, following his own
International Artist unique path of artistic expression. Through thorough mixed media
experimentation, and the acknowledgement of chance, Edem harnesses
“fortunate” accident, using this as a necessary building block, and on occasion,
a means-to-an-end, in his work. His work has taken him, in the role of an invited
unofficial U.S. Art Ambassador, to the furthest corners of South East Asia, and
recently, Europe. In the grand tradition, he reflects, and reflects on, his life
experiences in his creations, and the “behind the scenes” forces that bear
influence on our lives. This forms his main opus. His current work (2020)
focuses on the exposure and discourse on the topic of Geoengineering; a subject
that greatly impacts the People of the Earth and all life on it. The rest we’ll leave
for others to say.
