Joint Replacement Program

Restoring active lifestyles through expertise and innovation

2015-2016 Annual Report

A Letter from Dr. Meneghini

I am honored to introduce the inaugural Indiana University Health Saxony Hospital Joint
Replacement Annual Report. In December 2016, IU Health Saxony Hospital celebrates its fifth
anniversary. We have been privileged to experience unprecedented growth in our hip and knee
replacement program. This annual report will highlight our ongoing commitment toward our
mission of excellence in patient care, research and education.

Our hip and knee joint replacement program has received regional and national acclaim. Our
unique patient care coordination, led by our perioperative medical physician Pete Caccavallo, MD,
was featured in the Indianapolis Business Journal for excellence in patient-centered outcomes
and cost-effective practices. Our team of therapists, nurses, operating room staff, pharmacists,
discharge planners, industry partners and physicians meet weekly to discuss each patient and
their specific medical and surgical needs. This unique coordination of care allows our team to
individualize care, minimize errors and provide a remarkable experience to the patient and their
family. Data shows this exceptional patient care is responsible for our 20 percent annual growth,
which is nearly five times the market growth of hip and knee arthroplasty nationally.

The clinical and biomechanical research program, under the direction of Mary Ziemba-Davis,
provides a unique opportunity to address clinical questions that will help future surgeons and
patients achieve better function and outcomes from their hip and knee replacements. Our basic
science research provides valuable insight into the performance of new implant designs, such
as cementless knee replacement. This research has been recognized as the gold standard of
joint replacement care through multiple presentations at national and international research
conferences, as well as publication in peer-reviewed orthopedic journals. We remain committed
to our vision of helping improve hip and knee replacement patients through innovation and
research excellence.

IU Health Saxony Hospital is home to the state’s only Hip and Knee Replacement Fellowship
program. Our educational priority attracts highly-skilled surgeons to spend a year of specialized
training focused exclusively on hip and knee replacement surgery upon completing their
orthopedic surgery residency. This fellowship has expanded alongside IU Health Saxony’s national
reputation from one position in 2011 to three positions for the 2017-2018 academic year. We
have been fortunate to attract surgeons from across the US interested in spending a year of
specialized training here to learn our advanced, innovative surgical techniques in hip and knee
replacement. We are also pleased to announce our first International Fellow from Switzerland,
who will study here at IU Health Saxony Hospital starting the summer of 2017.

With appreciation to all who are integral to the success of our hip and knee replacement program
here at IU Health Saxony Hospital, I present our annual report. The following pages offer only a
brief snapshot into the hard work, dedication and countless hours this team devoted to creating
a preeminent joint replacement program for our patients and our community. Welcome to the
IU Health Saxony Hospital Hip & Knee Joint Replacement program!

Warm Regards,

Total joint replacement program

The experts at IU Health Saxony Hospital specialize in primary hip and knee replacements and
revision surgery. Our surgeons have extensive experience – performing a high volume of surgical
joint replacements procedures each year using leading edge therapies and treatment options to
speed patient recovery times and reduce pain. In 2015, over 630 patients came from not just
central Indiana, but across the state and beyond to receive a hip or knee replacement from us.

As a part of the growth of the IU Health Saxony Hospital program, along with the cutting edge
research we have accomplished, we have evolved from doing mostly primary joint replacements
to a program which excels at both primary and revision procedures. This evolution is a result of
our research program, our experience in these complex procedures and how we focus on the
patient’s individual needs and unique circumstances before, during and after the surgery.

Patient care

With a patient-centered model of care, the surgeons at IU Health Saxony
Hospital provide high-quality, individualized care to every person who walks
through the doors. Internists, nurses, surgeons, the operating room team,
therapists and our anesthesiologists gather together weekly to discuss
and coordinate the care of each patient. Getting healthcare providers to
work closely pays off for joint replacement patients. “There are less errors,
there’s less confusion. So the patients are ready to go home faster,” says
R. Michael Meneghini, MD.

This healthcare model has set the hospital apart nationally and has
been featured in the Indianapolis Business Journal*, describing the
program’s efficiency and patient outcomes.

From the first appointment through surgery, rehabilitation and follow-up,
IU Health Saxony Hospital provides support every step of the way to help
patients return to their previous level of activity quickly and safely. This
unique, collective approach gets patients back to living the life they want.

Education

The Indiana University Saxony Hospital Joint Replacement Program is a leader in teaching the
next generation of joint replacement specialists. Patients throughout the country come to
IU Health Saxony Hospital for routine first time replacements, as well as corrective surgeries for
procedures that were previously done and the device is not working as it should be. With the
high level of specialty in primary and revision hip and knee replacements, Dr. Meneghini states
that “if we are not performing those surgeries, we are doing research and leading the state’s only
joint replacement fellowship program. The program is growing with 80 applicants in 2015, from
all over the United States, vying for only two spots. The class of 2016-2017 will feature a fellow
from Switzerland who has chosen IU Health Saxony Hospital over Mayo Clinic, New York’s Hospital
for Special Surgery and Johns Hopkins—solidifying the growing national reputation of the joint
replacement program. Past fellows include:

Rocky Schuh

Rocky battled knee pain for
years. When she couldn’t do
simple activities such as walk
up and down stairs or garden
without severe pain, she went to
see R. Michael Meneghini, MD,
the Director of Joint Replacement
at IU Health Saxony Hospital.

Not long ago, 68-year-old Rocky (Rosslyn) Schuh had a moment of shock after she found
herself running to hit a badminton birdie in a fitness class. “Wait a minute,” she said to herself.
“I don’t run.”
It’s true that running hadn’t been on her list of activities for decades, due to chronic knee pain
and stiffness. Her first symptoms began in her late 20s when she was in an exercise class doing
deep knee bends. From then on, Schuh’s knees steadily declined, and she grew more sedentary.
All of that changed last summer when she had her right knee replaced by R. Michael Meneghini,
MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Indiana University Health Saxony Hospital. Six months later, she
repeated the procedure on the left side.
After years of doing not much of anything, Schuh only wishes her knee replacements had come
sooner. “I find myself doing things I haven’t done for years because my body seems to remember,”
she says. She attributes much of her recovery to the re-education of her body by Jan George, PT,
DPT, OCS, a physical therapist at IU Health Saxony Hospital. George says Schuh’s motivation and
work ethic made the difference. “She works harder than a lot of patients who go home after
surgery and sit on the couch,” George says.
Having been through recovery twice, Schuh is eager to share what she learned with other people
who are considering knee replacement. If you’re curious about what joint replacement can do for
