HRH Prince

Krom Phraya Narisaranuvattiwongse

B.E. 2488 (AD 1945)

His Majesty King Ananda Mahidol graciously commands a royal announcement that, His Majesty muses that HRH Prince
Krom Phra Narisaranuvattiwongse has served His Majesty King Chulalongkorn The Great, who is His Majesty’s paternal grandfather,
and His Majesty King Vajiravudh, who is His Majesty’s uncle, in several posts that require competent and discreet holders,
and the prince has successfully accomplished his duties in both the military and civil domains, as evident in the Announcement
of the Investiture of HRH Prince Krom Phra Narisaranuvattiwongse. Furthermore, in the reign of His Majesty King Prajadhipok,
His Royal Highness continued to serve the king as Member of the Supreme Council of State and when His Majesty King Prajadhipok
proceeded to receive medical treatment abroad, the prince was entrusted with the post of Regent and performed his duties with discretion.
He was thus highly respected by the public. In the current reign, in his old age, His Royal Highness continues to contribute to state affairs.
In particular, His Royal Highness has instructed His Majesty the King on knowledge in different fields including Thai language and royal traditions,
which no one else is able to teach. His Royal Highness is a senior royal personage who is revered by members of the royal family.
Recognizing His Royal Highness’ honest disposition and loyalty, His Majesty the King deems it appropriate to bestow on His Royal Highness
greater honor.
Therefore, His Majesty the King commands the investiture of HRH Prince Krom Phra Nariasaranuvattiwongse with the honorific
title of Krom Phraya and to have his name inscribed on the Royal Golden Plaque as Somdet Phra Chao Borommawongse Ther
Chao Fa Krom Phraya Narisaranuvattiwongse Mahamakut Bongsanaruebodindra Paramindranujadhibendra Atthamendraraja Aiyaka

on Tuesday. Together with the investiture, His Royal Highness is granted ownership of 50,000 rai of land according to the royal

Royal Command on the Investiture of
HRH Prince

Krom Phra Narisaranuvattiwongse

B.E. 2456 (AD 1913)

…(His Majesty King Vajiravudh) considers that HRH Prince Krom Luang Narisaranuvattiwongse served His Late Majesty King
Chulalongkorn, who is His Majesty’s father, in many different positions that required discretion. His Royal Highness was able to
accomplish both military and civil tasks as required by His Late Majesty, which was described in the Announcement on the Investiture
of HRH Prince Krom Luang Narisaranuvattiwongse. Later, during his tenure as Minister of Royal Household, His Royal Highness
was entrusted to act as Adviser to the Regent’s Assembly while His Late Majesty was paying his second visit to Europe. In 1909,
His Royal Highness had to resign from the post of Minister of Royal Household due to his illness. His Late Majesty graciously granted
him a pension. To date, despite suffering from infirmity that has led to his resignation from governmental positions, he has insisted
on performing private duties for His Majesty King Vajiravudh by skillfully designing civil work projects and submitting them punctually
with true honesty and loyalty. His noteworthy works include the designs of the royal urn for storing the funeral ash and relics of
His Late Majesty King Chulalongkorn as well as the golden shrine in cloisonné blue, the Maha Kathin royal headgear, and the base of
the Manangkhasila stone throne. In addition, His Majesty the King and His Royal Highness usually have corresponding ideas in different
matters such as the archeological study. His Royal Highness is admired by His Majesty for his honesty and loyalty to the monarch and,
as such, deserves greater honor.
His Majesty the King thus commands the elevation of HRH Prince Krom Luang Narisaranuvattiwongse to HRH Prince Krom Phra
Narisaranuvattiwongse and to have his name inscribed on the Royal Golden Plaque as Somdet Phra Chao Borommawongse Ther Chao Fa
Krom Phra Narisaranuvattiwongse Mahamakut Bongsanaruebodindra Paramindranujadhibendra Paramendraraja Pitula Svamibhakdi
Sayamvijit Sapphasilpasiddhi Vidyadhara Surachitrakara Subhakosol Prabondhaprijajarn Boranagati Sangitavaditavidhivicharn
Maholansitaladhyasai Buddhadtrairatanasarananuvatna Khattiyadejanubhabpabitra, an auspicious name for a person who was born
on Tuesday. Together with the investiture, His Royal Highness is granted ownership of 50,000 rai of land according to the royal tradition.

Krom Luang Narisaranuvattiwongse

B.E. 2448 (AD 1905)

…(His Majesty King Chulalongkorn) considers that HRH Prince Krom Khun Narisaranuvattiwongse has served His Majesty
the King in numerous state affairs since he was invested with the honorific title of His Highness Prince Krom Khun. For example,
His Royal Highness, together with HRH Prince Krom Phra Bhanubanaduwongse Voradej and HRH Prince Krom Luang Damrong
Rajanubhab, jointly established the Department of War and Marine and served the department in a high-ranking position. Subsequently,
His Royal Highness worked for different agencies other than the military department and even took the helm at the Department of
Public Works. The prince improved the administrative structure until the department was elevated to Ministry of Public Works and
he was appointed the first Minister. His Royal Highness is thus regarded as founder of the ministry. In later time His Royal Highness
was appointed by His Majesty the King as the Minister of State Treasury to address internal administration issues. When the Ministry
of Defense needed restructuring, His Royal Highness was entrusted again by His Majesty with the post of Minister of Defense.
His Royal Highness also served as Commissioner of the Department of War and Marine and, when His Majesty visited Europe in 1897,
the prince simultaneously acted for the Minister of State Treasury until His Majesty’s return.
In 1898, His Royal Highness resumed the post of Minister of Defense while serving as Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Navy.
In 1899, His Royal Highness started his second term as Minister of Public Works. And in this year, 1905, His Royal Highness was
designated as Minister of Royal Household.
His Royal Highness has been transferred to several ministries thanks to his abilities. He sets a good example and lays down a solid
work standard and guidelines. He is firmly imbued with honesty and integrity. His Royal Highness carried out many tasks other than
those directly under his responsibility on several occasions. His Royal Highness is also a master craftsman who creates work with
discretion, strives to seek artistic sources both in the country and abroad, and delivers incomparable work. His Royal Highness provided
His Majesty with a plethora of craftwork. His Royal Highness thus merits the honorific title of Krom Luang.
His Majesty reflects that of his two younger brothers who hold the royal title of His Royal Highness, only one, HRH Prince Krom
Khun Narisaranuvattiwongse, remains alive and deserves greater honor.
Therefore, by this royal command, His Majesty the King has elevated HRH Prince Krom Khun Narisaranuvattiwongse as HRH Prince
Krom Luang Narisaranuvattiwongse and has had his name inscribed in the Royal Golden Plaque as “Somdet Phra Chao Nong Ya Ther

…(His Majesty King Chulalongkorn) muses that HRH Prince Isarabongse, son of HRH Prince Viceroy Maha Sakdibalaseb who is son
of HM King Buddha Yot Fa Chulalok, is a king’s grandson in the First Reign. However, his mother, HH Princess Daravadi, is daughter
of HRH Prince Viceroy Maha Surasinghanad who is younger brother of HM King Buddha Yot Fa Chulalok. In this sense, the princess
had a status of the king’s niece in the First Reign. Considering the maternal descent, HRH Prince Isarabongse is son of a king’s niece,
not a king’s grandson. HM King Mongkut graciously styled the prince with the royal rank of “Chao Fa” or His Royal Highness Prince
in line with the royal tradition since the prince was born to a family of royal descent, both paternal and maternal.
In the current reign, HH Princess Krom Khun Khattiyagalya, who has passed away, and HH Prince Krom Khun
Narisaranuvattiwongse are daughter and son of HSH Princess Bannarai who is daughter of HRH Krom Muen Mattayaphitak,
the eldest son of HM King Nang Klao and maternal grandfather of His Majesty the King. HSH Princess Bannarai thus had the status
of the king’s granddaughter in the Third Reign and she is a relative closer to His Majesty the King than HH Princess Daravadi is.
In addition, both HH Princess Krom Khun Khattiyagalya and HH Prince Krom Khun Narisaranuvattiwongse are children of HM King
Mongkut, so both are half siblings of His Majesty the King and have the same maternal grandfather. Moreover, HRH Prince Krom Khun
Narisaranuvattiwongse is intelligent, honest and loyal to His Majesty. His Royal Highness thus deserves greater honor according to
royal tradition.
For all these reasons, His Majesty the King graciously commands the elevation of HH the Late Princess Krom Khun
Khattiyagalya to HRH Princess Krom Khun Khattiyagalya and HH Prince Krom Khun Narisaranuvattiwongse to HRH Prince Krom Khun
Narisaranuvattiwongse (both with the royal rank of Chao Fa). Together with this investiture, His Royal Highness is granted ownership
of 30,000 rai of land according to his royal rank of Chao Fa and the honorific title of Krom Khun. Announced on Sunday, the second
day of waning moon in the tenth lunar month of the Minor Era 1249 (AD 1887), Year of the Pig. May His Royal Highness be blessed
with longevity, grace, pleasure, good health, wisdom, and wealth forever…

Royal Command
on the Investiture of
HH Prince Krom Khun Narisaranuvattiwongse

B.E. 2428 (AD 1885)

…(His Majesty King Chulalongkorn) understands that HH Prince Chitcharoen is his younger brother whose mother is a daughter of
the king’s grandmother and younger sister of the king’s mother. The prince has thus been an intimate brother since his childhood.
HH Prince Chitcharoen is a versatile royal who has served His Majesty the King in different state affairs. His Highness has an honest
and just disposition, always conducts himself in a proper manner, upholds loyalty to His Majesty the King and, as such, is much trusted
by the king. It is evident that His Highness places the national welfare over his own. His Highness has served as a royal aide-de-camp
and once took the helm of the Royal Page Department. Currently, in his capacity as head of the Department of King’s Guards,
His Highness performs his duties with prudence and honesty. In addition, owing to his talents in arts and craftsmanship His Highness
has contributed to the restoration of Wat Phra Si Rattana Satsadaram and creation of the King Mongkut’s Buddha Image, and many
other works.
Given his status as the king’s close younger brother and his achievements in state affairs, His Highness has never behaved himself
in an arrogant and corrupt manner. On the contrary, His Highness is gentle and polite and behaves in the same way as other loyal
civil servants. His noble personality is well recognized among the public.
For this reason, His Majesty the King deems it appropriate to invest His Highness with the honorific title “Krom”.
By this royal command, His Majesty the King has elevated HH Prince Chitcharoen as HH Prince Krom Khun Narisaranuvattiwongse
and has had his name inscribed in the Royal Golden Plaque as “Phra Chao Nong Ya Ther Krom Khun Narisaranuvattiwongse”,
an auspicious name for a person who was born on Tuesday. His Highness is granted ownership of 15,000 rai of land. May His Highness
be blessed with longevity, grace, pleasure, good health, wisdom, and wealth forever…

และผังเมือง มีรากฐานและวิวัฒนาการนับจากห้วงเวลาที่มีประกาศพระบรมราชโองการ
โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สถาปนา “กรมโยธาธิการ” ในรัชกาลพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้า
เจา้ อยหู่ วั พระมหากษตั รยิ ์ รชั กาลท่ี ๕ แหง่ พระบรมราชจกั รวี งศ์ เมอื่ พ.ศ. ๒๔๓๒ ซง่ึ ตอ่ มา

Foreword

Dating back to over a century ago, it can be said that the Department of Public
Works and Town & Country Planning evolved from the time of the promulgation of
the Royal Command to establish the “Department of Public Works” in 1889 in the
reign of HM King Chulalongkorn The Great or King Rama V of the Chakri Dynasty. It was
later elevated as the “Ministry of Public Works” in 1892 with HRH Prince Krom
Phraya Narisaranuvattiwongse, a virtuoso in craftwork and many branches of the
fine arts, “...and who created artistic and exquisite craftsmanship...” holding
the position of the first “Director-General” and “Minister”.
His Royal Highness twice occupied the positions of Director-General of the Department
of Public Works and Minister of Public Works, though not for consecutive terms. Yet, when
combining the time of his service and how His Royal Highness “...performed his duties
with prudent wisdom...” as the chief supervisor of “all civil constructions” for
a total of nine years, he worked tirelessly as the “Chief Engineer of Siam” and was
responsible for numerous accomplishments as evidenced by the many objects and
structures that still remain today and testify to his superb skills.
Therefore, with a deep sense of pride, the Department of Public Works and Town
& Country Planning has compiled this biography that details the life and work of HRH
Prince Krom Phraya Narisaranuvattiwongse to commemorate and honor him. From the
time of its establishment in 2002, all the civil servants and officials of the Department
of Public Works and Town & Country Planning have pledged to follow the example laid
by His Royal Highness in terms of respecting the principles of craftsmanship and various
branches of fine arts that he initiated. We are also prepared to support his resolve to use
creativity to serve the country and to drive all missions towards concrete achievements
with the goal of sustainably improving people’s quality of life.

HRH Prince Krom Phraya Narisaranuvattiwongse (hereafter referred to as HRH Prince
Naris) was initially known as HH Prince Chitcharoen. His parents were HM King Mongkut
(King Rama IV) and HH Princess Bannarai (formerly HSH Princess Chae or HSH Princess
Bannarai, a daughter of HRH Prince Krom Muen Mattayaphitak – the founder of the Siriwongse
Family who was previously known as HRH Prince Siriwongse and was born to HM King Nang
Klao or King Rama III and Chao Com Manda Sap, the most favored concubine). HRH Prince
Naris was born at 12.30 am on Tuesday, the 11th waxing moon day of the sixth lunar month
of the Year of the Pig, at a royal villa inside the Grand Palace. His date of birth was 28 April
1863. His elder sister was HRH Princess Krom Khun Khattiyagalya (initially known as HH
Princess Kannikarkaew).
HRH Prince Krom Muen Mattayaphitak qualified as an artisan because he was a skilled
craftsman. In the reign of King Nang Klao, he was commissioned to head the “Department
of Pearl Works”. Serving as the chief facilitator for the construction of Wat Phra Chetuphon
Wimon Mangkhalaram’s ordination hall, all of its eight external doors boast exquisite pearl
inlays to this day. These doors are elegant, featuring patterns that stand out from traditional
counterparts. HRH Prince Krom Muen Mattayaphitak, moreover, was the chief engineer of
the restoration of Wat Nang. It can thus be said that HRH Prince Naris inherited artistic skills
from his maternal grandfather.

In line with ancient royal traditions, royal ceremonies were held to celebrate the birth of HRH Prince Naris. The first took place three days
after he was born. The second took place one month later. At the royal command of HM King Mongkut, the one-month anniversary of the prince’s
birth was observed on Friday, the 11th waning moon day of the seventh lunar month of the Year of the Pig or 12 June 1863. For the celebration,
HM King Mongkut officially named his son and bestowed his blessings via a handwritten letter. The monarch wrote in the Magahi language
using the Ariyaka alphabet. Regarding HM King Mongkut’s written blessings for his children, HRH Prince Naris said, “...They are strange.
We believe our father bestowed these blessings based on our horoscopes. These scripts usually reflect our characters or our
lives. Also, some scripts might have been written to change the ill-omened segments of his children’s destinies...”

“Somdet Phra Paramendra Maha Mongkut Phra Chom Klao Chao Krung Siam, as the father,
would like to name his son who was born to Princess Chae Bannarai

during the night of Tuesday, the 11th waxing moon day of the sixth lunar month, Year of the Pig, a year of the minor Thai era ending with 5,
as HH Prince “Chitcharoen”, spelled with auspicious characters for people born on Tuesday.
May the prince enjoy a long healthy life,

and be blessed with energy, wit, fortune, gold, gems, money, high rank, subordinates, and a harem.
Named on Friday, the 11th waning moon day of the seventh lunar month, Year of the Pig, a year of the minor Thai era ending with 5,

which is the 13th year (or the 4,412nd day) of the current reign.

When HM King Mongkut passed away in 1868, HH Prince Chitcharoen was just five-and-a-half years old. Later, he admitted that he had
only a slight recollection of his father. He only remembered that his father wore red attire and sat on a swivel chair at the dining table. The
prince also remembered that he used to drink licorice juice in his father’s presence. Regarding the décor of his father’s throne hall, the prince
recounted that there was a large rotational globe on a low table. He used to lie down on the floor and move the globe with his feet for fun.
Also, he could still recall a painting, featuring Phra Wisut Sunthorn (Pan) and his diplomatic mission from Siam as they presented a royal letter
from the Siamese king to Louis XIV, the King of France, at Versailles Palace adorning the original Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall that was in
the compound of the Grand Palace. This memory reflects that the prince had been interested in paintings since he was a child.
Although HM King Chulalongkorn The Great ascended the throne as a boy, he proved as capable as an adult. He took close care of his
younger brothers too. Through observations, he could tell the aptitudes of his brothers and provided supportive training. He helped his brothers
in the same way as a father would help his children. The royal upbringing, however, was very strict with his brothers being required to study
seriously and to avoid indulgence. Being taught to never behave arrogantly as royals, his brothers were expected to be humble and aware of
their duties as servants of the nation. HM King Chulalongkorn The Great adopted this approach because he understood the heavy weight of
his crown, as ruling the kingdom was a difficult mission. If his brothers were strong and excelled in state affairs, he would be able to entrust
them with some of his work. Under HM King Chulalongkorn The Great’s royal commands, all his younger brothers – at a tender age – achieved
missions that were relatively demanding for their ages.

On one occasion, HH Prince Chitcharoen’s drawing talents received international attention.
In 1874, an astronomical forecast indicated that a total solar eclipse would be visible in Bangkok.
Foreign astronomers therefore asked HM King Chulalongkorn The Great for royal permission to
install their telescopes in front of Chakri Maha Prasat Throne Hall to watch the phenomenon. At
the eclipse-focused gathering, the king had paper handed out to aristocrats and civil servants
so they could participate in a drawing contest. They were told to paint the eclipse event. Senior
royals and state officials formed a panel of judges. Based on the judges’ decision, there were
three winners. But HRH Prince Naris could remember the names of just two. According to him, two
of the winners were HRH Prince Bhanurangsi Savangwongse Krom Phraya Bhanubandhuwongse
Voradej and HRH Prince Krom Muen Divagara Wongseprawat. Both produced beautiful color
paintings. HRH Prince Naris, who was back then just 10 years old, joined the contest too. However,
his paper was just a penciled sketch presenting only the brief outline and the characteristics of
the visible corona. Foreign astronomers were also interested in the contest and asked for the
entries. Subsequently they wrote an article on the eclipse and published it with two drawings
from the competition. These two drawings were chosen because they were the most realistic.
The names of the painters were also printed under their drawings. They read HRH Prince
Krom Phraya Devawongse Varopakarn and HH Prince Chitcharoen.

HH Prince Chitcharoen received early education from HSH Princess Saraphat Phet, also a daughter of HRH Prince Krom Muen Mattayaphitak.
Later, he joined royals his age in studying at a school established by HM King Chulalongkorn The Great. Operating under the Royal Page
Department inside the Grand Palace, this school accepted royals and children of state officials as its students. Thai language was taught by
Phraya Sri Sunthorn Wohan (Noi), who was known as Luang Sarnprasert. The English-language teacher was Mr. Francis George Patterson.
HM King Chulalongkorn The Great recruited this expatriate as a schoolteacher after hearing that he had come to Siam to visit his maternal uncle
Luang Ratthayaphiban Bancha or Captain Samuel Joseph Bird Ames, who was a patrolman chief in Bangkok. The captain was the founder of
the Amesbutr Family.
In 1875, HM King Chulalongkorn The Great held the royal tonsure ceremony for HH Prince Chitcharoen. It was a major event with the prince
being paraded around the outer zone of the Grand Palace. The king also gave his younger brother special regalia. A royal banquet was held
at the (original) Boromratsathit Maholan Hall. The king was so generous because:

“...Chitcharoen is also a son of my aunt. He therefore was closer to me (than my other half brothers)…
Compared to me, Chitcharoen is an equal in terms of family background. He is actually neither higher nor lower in hierarchy.
Given that my royal tonsure ceremony was already the greatest, another major royal tonsure ceremony should be held for Chitcharoen

who shared many similarities with me so that his status would become higher…”

The following year, HH Prince Chitcharoen was ordained as a novice monk at Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Si Rattana
Satsadaram or Wat Phra Kaeo) with Supreme Patriarch Prince Krom Phraya Pavares Variyalongkorn as the preceptor and HH Prince Arunnibha
Gunakorn as the grantor of Sila. Following the ordination, HH Prince Chitcharoen stayed at Wat Bowonniwet Wihan. His monastic abode was
in Moo 3 next to Phra Satsada Vihara. During his novicehood, he practiced chanting of the Mahajati sermon in line with tradition. He also had
the opportunity to deliver the “Maharaj Chapter” – one of the longer and more difficult chapters – at an annual festival that was held at the
Amarin Winitchai Throne Hall. His chanting impressed HM King Chulalongkorn The Great, who found the performance perfect and profound. The
monarch rewarded the princely novice monk with five chang (equal to 400 baht) – considerably more than special rewards for others – on top
of the normal remuneration of 10 tamlueng (equal to 40 baht) and utensils.
His Mahajati practice would also prove useful in the future. When HRH Prince Krom Phra Sommot Amornbandhu was compiling
the Mahajati sermon book, HRH Prince Naris helped with reviewing of the Maharaj Chapter and provided content for the “Army Formation Episode”.
While the Army Formation Episode was originally written by Supreme Patriarch Prince Krom Somdet Phra Paramanujit Jinoros, the younger
prince had memorized all of it. When a preacher had the courage to ask the prince to provide a chanting rhythm, he agreed to help because
the preacher apparently could not find another expert in this field.
Also written by Supreme Patriarch Prince Krom Somdet Phra Paramanujit Jinoros, the Maharaj Chapter featured the Long Poem of Vessantara
Jataka or the Mahajati. This chapter is very important and beautiful. Reciters of this chapter needed to deliver a bass tone or “Maharaj Tone”.
Considered loftily elegant, it is suitable for royals. As for the Army Formation Episode, it is rich with rhythmical verses. It is therefore very
melodious.

After he left the monkhood, HH Prince Chitcharoen started studying subjects with which royals were expected to be acquainted. At the
palace of HRH Prince Maha Mala Krom Phraya Bamrap Parapaksha, he learned, inter alia, how to ride horses, shoot guns, and fence. The elder
prince also kindly taught the young prince about archeology and royal traditions. Such knowledge was useful when the young prince started
working for the state. HRH Prince Naris described himself as a favorite of HRH Prince Maha Mala Krom Phraya Bamrap Parapaksha. The elder
prince was so happy upon hearing that the young prince had been appointed HRH Prince Krom Khun Narisaranuvattiwongse. He even presented
the young prince with an exquisite palanquin.
HH Prince Chitcharoen, like many senior family members, was qualified to receive a scholarship from the king to study overseas. However,
when HM King Chulalongkorn The Great raised the issue with HH Princess Bannarai, she could not stop crying. The monarch therefore decided
not to send her son overseas.
The prince later joined the state services as a royal guard with a captain-equivalent rank. Over time, he was promoted to the post of royal
aide-de-camp. His duties were “...to supervise soldiers and ensure their compliance with military rules; to provide counseling to
senior military officers; to make decisions and issue orders for the king in line with regulations…” HH Prince Chitcharoen served
like a true soldier during those years. He underwent military training and stood guard just like ordinary soldiers. Moreover, HH Prince Chitcharoen
was named a board member of the Vajirayana Library for the Capital City, which was established in HM King Mongkut’s honor by his children
in 1883.

เขียนใส่เศษกระดาษลงในพระหัตถ์พระเจ้าน้องยาเธอ พระองค์เจ้าพระจิตรเจริญ มีความว่า
“ขอให้สกึ ออกมาชว่ ยทำ� ราชการ” จงึ ทรงลาผนวชตามพระบรมราชโองการ
In 1883, HM King Chulalogkorn The Great decided that HH Prince Chitcharoen should have
his own palace instead of residing at Niphet Phittaya Hall in the Grand Palace. Thus, the monarch
ordered that Tha Phra Palace be redecorated and that a new villa be constructed nearby
for the prince. The king also permitted HH Princess Bannarai to move out of the Grand Palace to
reside with her son at Tha Phra Palace. On 16 May 1883, the king performed a water-pouring
blessing ceremony to complete the granting of the palace to his younger brother.
In 1884, HH Prince Chitcharoen entered the monkhood. The royal ordination ceremony
took place inside the ordination hall of Temple of the Emerald Buddha, with Supreme Patriarch
Prince Krom Phraya Pavares Variyalongkorn acting as the preceptor and Supreme Patriarch (Sa),
then known as His Reverence Phra Buddhaghosacharn, as the first ordination teacher.
The ordained prince then stayed at Wat Bowonniwet Wihan.
When it was time to leave the monkhood, the prince wanted to stay on as a Buddhist
priest. Rumors also spread that he intended to never leave the monkhood. When
HM King Chulalongkorn The Great heard the rumors, he passed a handwritten note to
his younger brother during a Royal Kathin Ceremony at Wat Bowonniwet Wihan.
The royal note was delivered as the king presented saffron robes. It reads, “Disrobe to help
me with state affairs”. Complying with the royal command, the younger brother left the
monkhood.

Prior to his ordination as a monk, HH Prince Chitcharoen had already written that all his assets were to be given to his mother. The written
declaration, which was very much like a will, complied with a long-held tradition at that time. Written by HH Prince Chitcharoen, it reads
as follows:

On Tuesday, the ninth waxing moon day of the eighth lunar month, the Year of the Monkey, Year 1246 of the minor Thai era,
HH Prince Chitcharoen addresses this letter to his mother.

Out of my faith in the virtue of the Triple Gem and out of my understanding of suffering, I have constantly thought of ways to end pain. As
now is a good and reasonable time for me to terminate my cycle of repeated births and deaths,

I would like to inform Mother that I am going to be ordained as a monk and adhere to Lord Buddha-prescribed discipline for Buddhist priests.
I have no attachment to my belongings such as money and gold – be they living things or otherwise.

As for royally-granted items in my possession, Mother may keep them. However, if the king recalls them,
please submit them to the Royal Treasury. As for assets – living things or otherwise – that belong to me, Mother can have them all.

Mother may share them with relatives or manage them in any way she likes.
I give them all to Mother and no longer have anything to do with them.

As for my salary granted by the king via military units and offices that has been left with officials,
I have designated HH Jumbalal Sombhoj as the recipient. In strict accordance with my wishes, do not take this sum of money from him.

This letter is written by me, affixed with my emblem, and presented to Mother as a significant letter.

Tha Phra Palace, which was bestowed by HM King Chulalongkorn The Great on HH Prince
Chitcharoen, used to be the residence of several high-ranking royal members. The first owner
was HRH Prince Krom Khum Kasattranujit, grandson of HM King Buddha Yot Fa Chulalok
The Great (King Rama I). Other owners were senior royals who had mainly overseen
departments and divisions related to “crafts” or who had sponsored artists. One of
the palace’s owners was HRH Prince Krom Muen Chesadabodindra, who would later
become King Nang Klao. This prince commissioned the construction and restoration of various
monasteries based on his “personal preference”. The results were distinctive architectures,
which beautifully combined Thai, Western and Chinese styles to wondrous effect. The successive
owner of Tha Phra Palace was HRH Prince Lakkhananukhun, who used to be a patron of
Phra Sunthornwohan or Sunthorn Phu for some time. Later, Tha Phra Palace belonged to
HRH Prince Krom Khun Rajasihavikrom. A master craftsman, the prince was assigned to
oversee the ten crafts and stonework divisions. Also, he supervised the construction of several
important buildings. The prince carried out several types of craftwork at Tha Phra Palace. During
his time there, the palace was home to at least 200 craftsmen. After the prince passed away,
HM King Chulalongkorn The Great named HRH Prince Krom Muen Adulyslakshana Sombat,
head of the Weaponry Department and the Department of Stonework the palace’s new owner.
Following his passing, the monarch gave Tha Phra Palace to HH Prince Chitcharoen.
