Learning in the Midst of a Pandemic
1 Is education effective in the midst of a pandemic era? 2 By the end of 2019, there
was an outbreak of a pandemic disease, which is now called COVID-19. The arrival of the
disease greatly disrupted our lives, including education, which is a necessity in life. Since
halting education causes great disadvantages, learning must continue. 3 Therefore, many
changes were applied to the education system 4 affecting the ways of learning, time
allocation, and our health physically and mentally.
5 When speaking of education in the pandemic era, first, we need to mention ways
of learning. 6 Before the outbreak of COVID-19, most people usually learned at the
academies, as known as on-site learning. 7
this situation, because students gathered in one place will easily spread the disease. In
order to prevent that, students started to learn through online platforms using IT devices,
which is online learning. It is undeniable that online learning is one of the safest learning
methods in a pandemic since everyone can just stay home so
be convenient being able to study from anytime and anywhere as long as there are devices
and accessible internet connection, but not everyone has that. There are a lot of problems
in online learning both technical problems along with nontechnical ones, for example,
power outage, internet disconnection, group works, practical subjects etc.+
5 It is said that learning online takes much more time than learning on site, is that
talking about is the time allocation. 6 We spend a day when study online and on-site
differently from morning to the end of the day. 7 As you can see that people who learn on
site need to wake up early in the morning to dress themselves up, and travel to school
which use up some time more or less up to the distance from school and their home, after
school they also need to travel back home too, someone may use up to 4 hours altogether
for all of these. On the other hand, learning online can save time since commuting is
18
time. Online learning, however, has more workload to do, and students need to study more
by themselves to catch up with the lessons. When compared online learning uses about as
much time as on-site learning. So can we really say that online learning has more time?
5 Learning in the midst of a pandemic affects your health both mentally and
physically. 6 On-site learning, which is allowed sometimes temporarily, has more chances of
getting infected from the COVID-19 disease and sometimes makes you feel anxious. 7 Online
learning causes quite a lot of stress to the students as a result of many reasons, such as
homework. This seems to become a problem, so many schools have to use some measures
8 In conclusion, education in the pandemic era is not as effective as it should be 9
because many changes affect learning methods, time allocation, and health. 10 Hence there
is nothing we can do about education, but the solution needs to be put to the disease
problems as soon as possible in order to make everything become better already.
