Process
The process of felt making starts with the sheep that provide the renewable and eco-friendly resource of all the natural wool we use. As Nepal has no wool industry the wool is imported mainly
from New Zealand and Australia.
After dyeing with non-toxic (En71 compliant) dyes we have a broad palette to work with.
Flat sheets of wool are made by laying out tufts of the fibre, criss-crossing the layers until the required thickness is built up. A net is put over the wool and warm soapy water is sprinkled over the netting. The felt maker now starts to gently massage the wool until it begins to take, once the fibres start shrinking from the motion combined with soap and water, the individual layers start to mesh together and shrink into felt. The whole sheet is turned over and worked on again. The final step is to ‘full’ the felt; vigorous rolling in all directions until the fabric is firm and strong. During all steps of the process the felt
sheet is inspected for loose and uneven bits. It is then put outside to dry.
This is somewhat simplified; there’s a lot of skill and hands-on effort to get a flat even sheet of felt. We use the felt sheet for cut and stitch work like making clothes for our dolls for example. Making 3D objects in wet felting (the above process) is another story for another day.

PP439 Deluxe Fairy House Set/30pc
Our popular Woodland Fairy range is made from drift wood. These items are not suitable for young children due to the nature of the product. Although very well made, the wood is light and cannot withstand rough handling. Each piece is
different as the driftwood is all natural and we have to work with what Mother Nature
gives us. Please note: mat colours (inside the houses) may vary.

Ma is the matriarch in the family we work with in Nepal and she is one of my favourite people. She is always doing something; sorting out felt bits for recycling, starting a bon fire for burning rubbish, pulling things out the garden or getting involved with the felt-makers.
I love it when she makes traditional offerings. She will sit there for hours twirling cottons into wicks, attaching bits of colourful fabric to strings, filling strangely shaped dough figures with dark gooey treacle. Ma, nearly 80, has an enviable zest for life, a temperament for arguing and a welcoming heart for all the foreigners she meets.
I love her strength, her energy and her smile.

People travel, everywhere, and for all kinds of reasons.
They settle in foreign countries bringing the wealth of ideas and ways of their own culture with them. The Italians are a great example: who could imagine Australia, or the rest of the world without pizza, olives and lasagna?
With emigrating to a new country comes a great responsibility to learn and respect the culture of your new homeland.
As an immigrant and frequent traveller myself, I strongly believe that getting to know a culture and its people is the best way to overcome fear and discrimination.
Ultimately, we all want the same things from life: being accepted for who we are, no matter where we’re from, what colour or
sex we are, whom we love or what we believe in.
Our values as an adult are formed in our early years and by making ‘otherness’ a natural part of our daily life, we can
exist together without taking away the interesting differences that make us unique human beings. (I guess you thought this was just a product catalogue....haha).
Indigenous culture is a fascinating living part of the Australian culture and I think it is enormously important that we teach this to our children as part of their heritage.
I include indigenous resources with the utmost respect and the aim to make this information available to young children to help foster interest, understanding, curiosity and acceptance. Let’s celebrate the World of Diversity!
