CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION TO SUPERWRITE

1.1 What is Superwrite

 An abbreviated writing system based primarily on long-hand and secondarily
phonetics.

 A quick, easy to learn writing system that is easy to write and read.
 Does not require memorizing a new alphabet or changing one’s normal

writing style.
 No special symbols
 Follows the principle of abbreviating from the longhand spelling.
 Long vowels are written to aid in legibility
 Short vowels within words are not written.
 Initial and final vowels are written.

1.2 Purpose of Superwrite

To assist business executive and students to increase their speed in making
legible notes

To supply a fast and legible note-taking system that can be learned quickly
for use in the office by information – processing personnel.

To give the entering, prospective, or returning administrative assistant the
ability to take notes from dictation and transcribe them in a usable form.

1.5 Principle of Construction

Silent Letter

 In order to write faster, in Superwrite you will not write silent letters.

 What letters are silent?
 In the word: day, the y is silent.
 In phone, ph has the sound of f and is written f. (See Figure 1.0)

Long Vowels

 We will consider long vowels one that is pronounced in a word similar to how
it is pronounced alone. (aeiou). See Figure 2.0.

 E.g:
i) a as in ate
ii) e as in eat and near
iii) i as in light
iv) o as in vote
v) u as in hue

 Besides, we will consider the u in rule, the y in try and the y in easy to be
long. See Figure 3.0.

Different Long Vowels

 A letter is pronounced as different long vowels, write that long vowel.
 E.g; in the word freight, the e-i combination is pronounced a; we will write

f-r-a-t. See Figure 4.0.

Short Vowels

a) Short Vowels in the Body of Word

 Do not write short vowels in the body of a word.
 In the word even, we should write e-v-n, omitting the e in the body the words.

b) Intial Short Vowel

 Write the vowels if the word begins with a short vowels sound.
 Eg; in the word add, the beginning short vowel a is written. See Figure 6.0

 Write the vowels if a word ends in a short vowel sound.

 There are several a numbers of words in English language for which there are
special abbreviations. See Figure 8.0

 In superwrite you will also use a number of special abbreviations.

 SuperWrite is an English shorthand system based largely on previous
shorthand systems and largely intended for people who need to increase
their writing speed without devoting months to learning more complicated
systems.

 It is a writing system, as it uses cursive forms of the letters of the spoken
alphabet to represent sounds.
