What is K-pop?
K-pop (Korean: keipap), short for Korean popular
music; is a genre of music originating in South
Korea as part of South Korean culture.
HISTORY OF KPOP
1885 : The Introduction of Western Folk Songs
•American missionary, Reverend Henry
Appenzeller started teaching American and
British folk music at a school in Korea.
•Songs (Korean) : Changga
•Original English lyrics replaced with Korean
words.
1925 : First Known Korean Pop Album & Introduction of 'Trot'
First Known Korean Pop Album :
•<Yi Pungjn Sewol> <The Tumultuous Time> - Park Chae-seon
and Lee Ryu-saek,
•Contained popular Japanese songs that translated into
Korean.
Introduction of 'Trot' :
•Japanese composer, Masao Koga mixed traditional Korean
music with gospel music created by American evgnelists
•In Korea, it is known as 'Trot' and was extremely popular.
Modern K-Pop Idols recently released new or 'covered' versions
of trot music.
1929 :The First Pop Song Written by a Korean Composer

1951 :Re-Establishment of the USO
•Between 1952 and 1953, not a day went by without the USO
providing services somewhere in Korea. With the constant
playing of Western music, this further helped to shape Korean
music.
1953 : The Kim Sisters
•Some Korean performers gain
international recognition.
•The Kim Sisters performed on the
Ed Sullivan Show more than 22
times.
1957 : The American Forces Korea Network Radio Starts Its
Broadcast
•American Forces Korea Network Radio started to brodcast
Western music
•Increase popularity of Western music in South Korea
•Helped to influence Korean music.
1980 : Cho Yong-pil
•After first single, he gained national attention.
•Winning Asia Music Forum made him famous internationally
around Asia.
•He became first Korean artist to perform at Carnegie Hall in
New York.
1990 : The 90's Korean Music Fad
•Male K-Pop Idol group , the Seo Taiji & Boys emerged on
MBC's talent show with debut song 'Nan Arayo' or 'I Know.'
•The judges deemed it a fail, but Korean public loved it.
•Their success form a pathway for many other K-Pop groups to
follow.
1995 – 1998 : Company establishment & K-pop Group
•Year 1995, Korean entrepreneur, Lee
Soo-man founded SM Entertainment.
•Year 1996, YG Entertainment was
founded by Yang Hyun-suk.
•Year 1997, JYP Entertainment was
founded by J.Y. Park.
•These three companies were being
called with ‘big three’.
•These three companies had launched
several popular groups like H.O.T. , S.E.S. ,
Baby V.O.X. and Fin.K.L.
2000 : The Hallyu Wave
•K-Pop music started spreading towards neighboring Asian countries.
•Many records were broken by K-Pop groups in other countries
2007 – 2012 : South Korean Entertainment Circle Ushered in the Second
Wave of Frenzy
•In year 2007 , K-Pop Idol Rain was the first K-Pop music artist to perform at
the Tokyo Dome.
•In the same year , Girl's Generation debuted with songs such as 'Into the
New World' and 'Kissing You'.
•In year 2009 , Girl’s Generation get popular for their hit single 'Gee', which
was dubbed as the most popular song of the decade.
•In year 2012 , PSY's 'Gangnam Style' became the most viewed K-Pop video
on YouTube and the most viewed video overall on YouTube.
