Presidents Report
Welcome to 2018. I hope you all had an enjoyable and relaxing Christmas and New Year. We have lots happening in the square dance world this year including the big one with the National Convention sailing into the West in April. I understand that National Committee is pleased with registrations to date, but if you haven’t yet registered I encourage you to do so. Your local National is always the best so if you haven’t attended a National before now is the time to do so. Spectators are always welcome to come and enjoy the atmosphere and see this dance spectacular.
Coming up on Sunday 4 February we have the Mad Hatters Tea Party. Once again, this dance is being jointly put on by the Society and the Callers Association for Society members. A contribution to afternoon tea would be appreciated. Free raffle and prizes for best mad hat. See advert in this Magazine for more details.
As always, I encourage anyone who has any ideas or suggestions to build our great activity to talk to me or other members of the Committee. We are still seeking a Promotions Officer to join the Management Committee. This position has been vacant for some time and we welcome individuals, couples or a small committee to take up the task of this role. For square dancing to grow and to coordinate the Society’s promotions this position is required.
Great to see an increase in dancer membership this year and that dancers are embracing the electronic copy of Squaring Around. The electronic copy is free with your Society membership; to receive your copy just let the Registrar know your e-mail address. Hard copies are still available on payment of a subscription. Also, don’t forget to like the Society’s Facebook page.
Best wishes to Patricia Mori on her recovery from her recent stay in hospital. We understand she is progressing well and look forward to her return to the Round Dance floor.
Sad to hear of the closure of Geraldton Friendly Squares. David and Margaret have given many dancers over many years much enjoyment and introduction into the square dance and clogging world. We wish them well and thank them for their contribution to our favourite pastime.
Robert
IMPORTANT NOTICE
It has been brought to my attention that members within the society would like to have birthdays, celebrations and condolences formatted in a way that will avoid them being lost within Club News articles.
Due to this fact there will be a
Monthly Celebrations and Condolences section within the Squaring Around starting in the next edition.
This is open to clubs and members as a free of charge service.

Allemanders
Caller/Manager: Jim Buckingham Dance: Sunday 2:30pm
Hi All,
Here we go again.
We are looking forward to Feb 25th Opening
and 14th Birthday Dance.
This year we have numerous events happening including the National and numerous other Dances and some will clash with our Club Days. The gains from this happening is that our Club Members get to attend other Sunday Functions without impeding on family and social commitments. Let’s call that a (Cup 1/2 Full ) attitude.
Many of our Members attended the Traditional Christmas and New Year Dances and enjoyed the opportunity to mix and mingle. It is always a pleasant experience to see the newer dancers getting to dance and mingle with seasoned dancers and to experience the getting to understand what Square dancing is all about.
On a happy note, Leila has received a call from Neville who is one of our Dancers. He has been in hospital for some time and is now back home and on the mend.
The pilgrimage to Margaret River was another highlight with a group of our Members enjoying this Weekend of Dance and visits to many of the attractions in the South West.
While mentioning the Weekend down south I must thank Richard and Heather Muir and Leila most of all for the hard work and effort they put into this weekend being the success it was. The input and attitude displayed by so many Volunteers on the weekend was another of the reasons the weekend was such a success. The Augusta/ Margaret River Club Members were a great help and at least 4 Non Dancers helped out so much both in the Hall and in Transport.
Without naming names in fear of missing someone I will add that organising Accommodation in advance for numerous dancers is just one of the unseen functions taken on by certain people. Most of all the Dancers were very proactive when it came to setting up and clearing the Hall.
When you consider that some of the Attendees don't dance on a regular basis,
The standard of dance on the whole weekend was very high and it was noticed by the Callers. Ross and Di Henley did come to Margaret River but had to leave early and we missed his calling and Patricia was unable to Cue the Round dancing as she was in hospital. We wish them well. The feeling amongst the Dancers was for this Weekend down south to
continue and as the Hall that has been used for this
function will not be available next year, other nearby options have been checked out and a short list of potential Venues have been scrutinised. More information will be forthcoming as the year progresses.
In closing, I just want to mention that Allemanders will be advertising for Learners with an intake planned for just after the National Convention. Kind Regards,
Jimbo.
Avon Squares
Caller/President: Brian Sims Dance: Friday 8:00pm
Welcome back to another year's enjoyment, fun and friendship with our Square Dance colleagues.
We have just returned from Margaret River where we all enjoyed a great weekend of dancing and fellowship in a beautiful town and perfect weather. It was great to have six of Avon Squares members share this time away with members from so many other clubs.
As the Augusta/Margaret River club is no longer active, the dance weekend was so ably conducted by Jim Buckingham and Richard Muir with their hard working wives, Leila and Heather. They were assisted by a range of volunteers and callers who all contributed to the success of this popular event.
We returned home to Beverley to face 37 degrees of heat and 82 mls of rain - some of it very heavy though we are lucky that there has been no damage here. Our hearts go out to the farmers in Cunderdin who experienced their very own cyclone! Avon Squares will not be returning to dance in York until the end of February.
Please note that Avon Squares Birthday dance will be held at the BEVERLEY Town Hall on Saturday 12th May at 2.00pm. (York Town Hall not available before July)
Cheers for now, Lorraine & Brian

Well another Christmas has come and gone. We hope you all had a lovely one. Happy new year to you all too. I hope you have cleaned and polished your dancing shoes ready to begin the new dancing year.
Since the last magazine we have had our Christmas wind-up dance and our annual Christmas dinner, both of which we greatly enjoyed. For those of you who went away on holiday we are waiting eagerly to hear of your exploits and experiences.

Hi All
First of all, I must apologise for our missing
notes in November and December, as I was away and there was some glitch with emails but I decided I would put in the important info this month.
I hear from our Dancers who were able to attend the special occasions that a great time was had by all, Especially the Hi Viz weekend, I understand that there were lots of great callers (don’t we have some of the best in WA) a great deal of fun, and entertainment, and that the whole weekend ran like clockwork, lots of food, fun, and most important great dancing so congratulations to all concerned.
We also missed the Wongan Hills weekend once again our dancers who were able to go had a great time as usual, ill health was the reason we were unable to be there but I’m happy to say that Terry has improved after two hospital visits. It’s such a pity that sometimes we can’t be in two places at once.so that we could enjoy all that is on offer. December will be really busy with all of the Christmas Dances coming up.
Brian at Avon Squares will start to get us all in the mood at the end of November, always a great afternoon, an enjoyable drive out into the country, with good dancing, and time to catch up with old friends and enjoy a wonderful afternoon of dancing with fantastic country tea as always thanks to all the callers and dancers who made it great success in Brian’s absence (Due to ill health), great to know that all is going well for him.
Monday 11th December will be our last dance for the year, you are all in invited to Come and check out our new venue at Mandurah Bowling Club (corner
Alnutt and Dower St 5 mins walk from the train station) Its air conditioned too. Do come and join us sometime.
We had our first evening there on the 30th of October, and apart from a few hiccups we all enjoyed it, I won’t mention that we set off the alarm system, but I’m sure that won’t happen again, we are now getting used to the changes and like the new venue.
On a sad note we heard of the passing of a good friend this month Jimmy Dunlop, who we have spent many happy hours with on holiday and dancing venues, RIP Jimmy our condolences go to Marie and family and friends.
On a happy note who can believe that Patsy has reached a milestone birthday and Terry and I and Joan and Bill were lucky enough to share in her surprise. Did anybody ever see Patsy speechless? She was that day, (but not for long) her family did a wonderful job of organising and she didn’t have a clue, congratulations Patsy, I’m sure I speak for all who know you.
JANUARY 2018
Here we are in a New Year. Best wishes to all
for Happy Health one. Well what a busy time in December some Dolphins did manage to get to several of the Christmas dances and all were very enjoyable, lots of fun and great to catch up with other dancing friends thanks to all the clubs and callers for their hard work.
Our own dance was most enjoyable and it was good to welcome Keith (hope you enjoyed your visit). We look forward to seeing you again sometime, and of course anyone who would like to visit will be most welcome. As I mentioned earlier we are now at our new venue Mandurah Bowling Club.
Well what a great start to the new year of dancing, several of our Dancers went to Margaret River for the annual festivities and as always it was a great weekend thanks to Richard Heather Jim and Leila and their happy band of workers, so good to have some of our well known callers and visitors, I’m sure a good time was had by all. Most of the caravan travellers rushed to book accommodation for next year, see you all there.
Dolphins are going to start Beginners again in March on Monday evenings at 7.30 so if you know anyone who is interested please ask them to give me a call on the number at the top of these notes. Introduction nights Feb 12th 19th 26th will be free for anyone to try and see how much fun we have, I think that’s all the important news for now so I will say bye all and look forward to seeing you on the floor somewhere and we are always open to visitors if you are in the Mandurah area.
Regards to all Joy Derrick

Wow what a great finish we had to 2017. Christmas saw a flood of enthusiast dancers enjoying fun and festivities @ Greenfinches along with all the colourful decorations. We had a giant Santa onstage, Santa’s sidecar motorbike carrying his reindeers, Santa in a box, Santa’s front end loader and raffle gift boxes full of wonderful treats. Thanks to all those who visited from far and wide to make it a wonderful night. Our dinner night to wind up the year was a very social affair at the Kingsley Tavern. Two very long tables of about 20 each neatly packed into our own special room with Christmas decorations on tables. The highlight of the night being Irene Matta being awarded Greenfinch of the Year 2017 for all her work supporting Greenfinches during the year.
Congratulations, well done and many thanks Irene. We start dancing again Tuesday 23/1/2018 and look forward to our club BBQ being held at Val Daly’s Sunday 11/2/2018 staring at 5.00pm. Many thanks to our club caller Steve Turner for all his great calling and for the other antics he gets up to. Sue does a great job putting up with heaps from Steve and keeping him on target for many special nights of fun & friendship set to music at Greenfinches. We have so many contributing members that help make it so much easier for our hard working committee to do all the extra bits to complete the whole package of running this great club.
Thanks all. Regards to all Steve L

Hi Everyone,
The few nights before we closed for the
holidays went very well, even though a couple of the nights were hot. The week before our Christmas Dance, some of our members attended Swan Valley’s Christmas Dance, as it was impossible for us to close our club to go, all reports came back that our attendees thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
Our Christmas Dance was a Blast!! Eight sets dancing and some over was practically overwhelming. We were delighted to have a representative from our Charity for 2017 The Parkinson’s Disease WA Inc. Present at our Dance The head Nurse Gratefully
Page 10
accepted the cheque for Almost $400:00 from our “Spare Change Box”. As most of you know our member Robbie is a Parkinson’s suffer. The week before El Presidente Ian asked us to drop our spare change into the box. That Evening we raised $50:00 in small change, the next day when I counted it, I could have kissed everyone who emptied their pockets. I have since received a couple of phone calls and a letter of sincere thanks from Parkinson’s WA for our efforts. We had our Raffle Queen Maz organize our Raffles for the Dance, but on the night, members and friends came in with gifts for us to raffle. We are very grateful to those who donated and want you all to know that the recipients are as well. Some of the donated wine would have gone down well (me being a wine connoisseur of course), but not a recipient !! It was also lovely to see Don & Beth back at the club after 30 years. He had a dance and never missed a beat. They are currently doing the Learners but are certainties’ to join a club when they graduate. The Wongan Hills Mob also broke their Friday Rules and graced us with their presence and took home a couple of our Raffle Prizes of which they were delighted. The Jackpot was $20:00 and was won by Margaret Gianatti well done Margaret.
Our Christmas Cake was cut by Louis as he has been a member of our club for 40 Years, that is a long time in anyone’s life and it was the Perfect Salute to him. He was so proud, and Kevin actually worked out the amount of nights he had danced at the club, and most people were astounded. The Cake tasted Magnificent and was made by Margaret Mills. We also had our Carol Singing and Kevin’s rendition of Silver Bells just about drew some of us to tears. It was fantastic.
Our Post Christmas Get-Together is on this weekend 20th January so results will be published in next edition.
Regards to all Happy New Year Molly

2017 is now behind us. We finished the year off with our BBQ and dance. The night was (as usual) an occasion of letting our hair down, socialising and a bit of dancing to finish off with. Plus we were absoluetly delighted with the retutrn of the prodigal Greg and Gwenda from Cookernup.

Firstly, we must wish everyone a very happy New Year and hope that your year will be one of good health and friendship. At the end of November, we had Ken Ritucci who had a very laid back style but still had us all dancing and doing the more interesting moves he had in store for us, and to quote him "or you could do that". Both Ken and Sue were great house guests and we enjoyed our time with them and hope that all who came to the weekend enjoyed the dancing and went home with a sense of achievement.
The lead up to Christmas saw many great dances but with my work commitments it was very hard to get to as many as we would have liked
but to those we did get to thanks for a great night. Our own Christmas dance took on the theme of a Blue Christmas and once again Heather did a wonderful job of decorating the hall in the short time allowed. Thanks to those members that were able to assist her in getting the job done.
To all those who attended we would like to thank you for your support and for making a great atmosphere we were truly humbled by
the number of dancers who came. To the visiting callers thank you for your part in making the night so good. We at Kiwilers are blessed (as are many clubs) to have a number of members who are there to assist with various tasks on club nights and for their help we are truly appreciative.
The second weekend of January saw around 13 sets of dancers converge on Margaret River for the annual dance weekend. The energy of those
in attendance made the weekend one that I will remember for some time.
Thank you to everyone for giving me a wonderful start to the Square Dance year. Thanks must also go to those visiting Callers for their part in making the weekend what it was. To my Aussie mate Jim for his devotion to this activity all I can say is thanks buddy for a great time and I enjoyed every minute. To Trish, Shirley, Loraine, Anne, Rod, Kevin and Terry and to all the other who helped in some way your help over the weekend was simply the best.
What say we do it all again next year?

Caller: Bruce Gillett
Dance: Wednesday 7:30pm
In December the folk at Melody had some difficult discussions to make, as like many clubs now, we have a shortage of members. So we have decided to run a beginner’s class next year, the other choices
The request bracket is last bracket and is chosen by door and raffle prize winners using a list on the back wall. Some are chosen based on (winning) ticket number, some by name, some are regular request choices, some are random (by blindly pointing at the list.)
Many thanks to all the dancers who have joined in and made the atmosphere that works so well at our club. It is hard to believe that we will be entering our sixteenth year in 2018!
We will be re-starting 2018 on February 15th (not February 8th as previously advised). This is a week later than normal because Tracie and I are having a vacation this year. We will not be dancing on 29th March, (as our hall is not available on that night.)

Welcome back to 2018 which will be a busy year with the National Square Dance Convention here in Perth where we will have 2 sessions over the weekend. We will include an introduction to clogging at those sessions. We are also running a beginner’s class commencing on Monday 12th February. Plus, we are off to Burnie Tasmania for the National Clogging Convention.
Ever thought about adding another dance form which you do on your own and at your pace that you can do at National Square Dance Conventions then try clogging. Our beginner’s classes will be on Monday nights starting on the 12th February at 6.30pm held at the Carrarmar Community Centre on Redgum Way in Beechboro/Morley. Cost will be $10 per visit. The Thursday night class will start shortly after. Please come along and give it a go.
The new ACA dance list for 2018 is now been completed and we will start to make sure we learn new routines to be ready for the convention. If you come along to our beginner’s classes you to will be able to do the dance list which is done all over Australia and New Zealand at all major functions.
Until next month please stay safe and get back into our favourite pastime Square Dancing, Rounds and Clogging.
Remember Happy Feet are Clogging Feet and we are not a plumbing problem.

being perhaps being just a Round Dancing Club,
or worse closing. So we will await to see what 2018 will bring for Melody and our caller Bruce as we are keen to keep dancing here!!
We had our Christmas wind up on the 6th December where we had at least 3 sets and a variety of callers. A very good night and thanks to those that came to help us celebrate the end of the year! A big Thank You to all those folk that came early and helped to decorate the hall, and also to those that looked after the food side of things as well.
And then we all met again at the Kardinya Tavern on the 13th December. It is good to catch up with some past members who are able to come to our social events even if they are no longer able to dance.
Our opening dance will be on 7th February, and we will have our annual Picnic at Point Walter on February 11th – byo everything (seats, food, drinks etc.) Looking forward to seeing your there – and - Keep in Tune with Melody...

Dance: Saturday 7:30pm
Our Christmas Dance theme of ‘All I want for Christmas Is ...’ was captured by dancers placing their wish into Santa’s prototype mailbox, created by our resident innovator, Peter Lees. President Janice read out a selection of naughty and nice wishes during the dancing breaks, and Steve Turner, Steve Logwood and Peter Lees were presented with their dream cars. Community carol singing of ‘Carol of the Birds’ and ‘All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth’ enhanced the festive spirit. Lucky chair prizes and 16 raffled hampers meant that many of the 70 dancers went home with some surprise gifts. Steve, Paul and Jim made three jovial Santa Clauses and their usual fun and frivolity ensured that the evening was magical and memorable. Thank you everyone for ending 2017 on such a high.
Early in December many members socialised in the Victoria Gardens in city central to enjoy the smooth sounds of the City of Perth Band as they performed their ‘Brass on the Grass’ Christmas concert. The night was balmy with nibbles, drinks and conviviality in abundance.
Our first dance in 2018 is on February 3 commencing at 8pm. ‘The Age of Aquarius’ is the theme. Come adorned in blue or any other watery costume, or with outfits that reflect the halcyon flower
power days. There will some spot prizes to get the year off with some good fun.
We will be closed one evening in February, probably the 24th, as the church uses the hall. Please call 0410818732 to confirm.

Like I mentioned last month, “so far our club still hasn’t had any further news about the (imminent?) renovations to the hall”, things did and have changed, and very very suddenly.... the week after our last dance for 2017 we received a phone call saying “sorry you can’t use the hall anymore”
And while we are a little sad to not have the opportunity to ‘say goodbye’ properly – We are excited to welcome everyone to our new hall at the Bentley Community Centre, Nyamup Way, Bentley
Quick directions –
Off Manning road at the Caltex Service Station, left into Hedley St and Right into Nyamup Way and turn left into the entrance drive just before the end of the road – but please check it out on your phones or navigators
Remember INSTEAD of a Christmas Dance we intend to turn on a real WOOF WOOF of a Chinese New Year celebration on February 19th.
And DOG GONE - as the year of the dog anything ‘DOG’ is the theme but we do solemnly promise NO dog food or dogs for dinner either - only the very best Chinese cuisine will do.
Please MARK it on your calendar February 19th - no need for dinner we will be eating after the first dance so no chance of indigestion either and remember NEW HALL at the Bentley Community Centre, Nyamup Way, Bentley.

Once again thanks to so many clubs welcoming
us to their Christmas dances – it was lovely to share the festive season with so many dancers, hopefully we will get out and about in 2018 and continue to share in all the Square Dance fun and friendship – 2018 certainly looks like it will be very busy. So Happy New Year to all and don't hesitate to phone either Trish or myself (0419927633) if you are in any way confused and while it may be said ‘’the world is a-changing’, ours just did – a new adventure for Riverside, and it’s fair to say there has been a few......
Opps – just realised I haven’t mentioned that Riverside starts back at our NEW HALL at the Bentley Community Centre, Nyamup Way, Bentley on Monday 5th February – see you there
Cheers for now Jo-Anne.
