President Report.
October started with the ‘Blue Moon’ Beginners Ball. Allemander Squares once again did a magnificent job hosting the ball on behalf of the Society and our thanks to Jim, Leila and their committee. This was one of the best attended Beginners Ball since its inception and it was pleasing to see the number of new dancers joining in and being well supported by the more experienced dancers and the Callers.
The month’s dancing culminated with the State Square Dance Festival in Bunbury. Just under 200 dancers registered for the weekend and was well supported by Callers and Cuers. Unfortunately, due to work commitments with the WA Electoral Commission for the local government elections held over the weekend Susan and I were unable to attend. Our congratulations to Reg and his committee for an exciting program and we look forward to hearing the reports about the weekend. Congratulations to Rosemary (Assistant Secretary) and Phil Corbin on choosing to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary at the State Festival.
The position of Promotions Officer is still unfilled. The Promotions Officer’s has an important role in overseeing the promotion and publicity of square dancing in WA. We are seeking expressions of interest from dancers who would like to take on this role. We welcome either an individual, a couple or a small committee to undertake this important role within the Society to ensure square dancing continues to thrive in Western Australia.
Don’t forget Have-a-Go Day coming up on 1 November 2017 in the beautiful surrounds of Burswood Park. This year marks the events 25th year. The Society will again be participating with square dance sessions throughout the day. Jim Buckingham will be coordinating the calling and we would like as many dancers as possible to come along and join in the fun.
Coming up on 4 February 2018 the Society and the Callers Association have joined together to present a free afternoon of fun and dancing at a Mad Hatters Tea Party in the Midland Town Hall.
On the farming side, harvest will start in our area in the next few weeks. Canola is starting to be swathed. The recent rain was welcomed by those of us who have crops that are still green but not welcomed by those cutting hay as the quality of the hay will be downgraded.

Callers Report.
Howdy Partners and Corners.
The Status of our Executive. I’m pleased to say
is staying Quo. No newbies joining our Executive. No oldies having to Go.
Our AGM has come and Gone. Our Executive has been put into Gear. The members are all primed and Ready. For what promises to be another productive Year. The members all thought long and hard. Before their votes were cast. But eventually decided to stick with what they had. After all they hadn’t made too many mistakes in the past. You know the AGM is one special meeting.
You never really want to Miss. Or you could find yourself being The President, The Secretary and The Treasurer. And enjoying a life time of Executive Bliss..
But as you can tell from the First Paragraph. Nobody slept in or had to Abstain. So our Executive is what our Executive was. And I’m the reporter Again.
Bugger!! Cheers Kev.
Letter to the Editor
Hi All, I have just graduated from the Square Dance Society Beginner classes, I’ve really enjoyed these lesson and have met some wonderful
people. Richard Muir our caller has been
fantastic. Steve Longwood who has facilitated the Wednesday night classes has done a wonderful job ensuring that all the learners had partners are up in a square ready to left allemande, swing and spin the top.
I'd also like to thank all the angels who arrived at the start of the evening, no matter what the weather was like to encourage and support us newbies. I started these lessons in March of this year and as I learnt the moves, the more I wanted to know about the square dancing world. So I attended so square dancing functions such as the callers 40th Birthday of three callers, Christmas in July, an introduction night at Swan Valley, and Northern Stars and Happy Wanderers Birthday dance, only to watch but was encourage to join a square and dance. On the occasions that Colleen and David came with me, we were welcomed with the friendliness and happiness of the dancers and callers in these clubs. Even though we were only beginners they were all happy to help us develop our dancing.
As a new graduate, I think that new beginners should be encouraged to attend society events, to watch the experience dancers and hear different callers call. I feel that this has helped me

One last Thank you to Susan, Robert and David Dew, who introduced square dancing to Colleen and I. We are both looking forward to our first festival in Bunbury.

Thanks Annette! It’s been amazing to be a part of such a lively and supportive group. I have no doubt that the encouraging and supportive attitude is carried in to all clubs. I highly encourage all to invite friends and family to Have-A-Go Day on the 1st November.

Hi All,
The Beginners Ball was a great success once
again with the floor and the carpark very busy. You can't ask for more than that. The hard work prior to the dance is a credit to all concerned. Some of our long serving and new members are working together very well when it comes to special displays with lights projecting onto a Blue Moon to give a 3D effect and layers of Clear Plastic over backdrops creating mini windows of Blue Moons shining into the Hall. Everyone chipped in with allocated tasks to perform and numerous visitors assisting so the Dance could start on time.
We have had word from Lizzy that the Club Gnome is dressed and ready to go to the WA Square Dance Festival.
We wish Neville a speedy recovery from health issues.
Thanks go to the Dancers that assisted at the Demo held at the Cambrai Retirement Village recently.
On a sad note, all at the Club send our condolences to Barbara Clackson and family at the passing of one of our Founder Members Richard.
Hope to see some of you at the Have A Go Day 1st November.
Jimbo.

Hello again from Avon Squares,
As we write, we’re all getting ready for the
State Festival at Bunbury. So much effort has gone into the preparation by the Committee that it will certainly be a great dance weekend. As we see the weather reports, it doesn't look so inviting but we are getting used to the weather turmoil that is being experienced this year. One thing is certain, we will all enjoy the fellowship and good fun that is in store for us.
We all enjoyed the Beginners Ball hosted by Allemander Squares - the newer dancers are going so well.
Though a bit short on for dancers again a couple of times this month, we enjoyed having Roger dance with us recently.
The hall was set up for use by another group so it was a case of fit where we could but we all managed to have a good night.
Avon Squares pre-Christmas Dance on Sunday 19th November at the York Town Hall from 2.00pm until 5.30pm. We are hoping for another successful get-together before the usual Christmas rush and hope for a pleasant day weatherwise for those folk who make the trip out to see the start of harvest and some of the hay making in progress.
In the October Magazine we reported that Jim Buckingham would again bring his coach up to York for our dance and now we have to advise that already the coach is booked out. Sorry about that but we look forward to seeing you all whatever means of transport you can manage.
Cheers for now - happy dancing and safe travelling,

Well another month has gone, one more and it's Christmas. Faye had a birthday this month but we couldn't sing 'Happy Birthday' to her as she was away on holiday. Vicky, our secretary, came home, but only briefly as she is off again shortly. Heather, Kevin and Brittany are going to Italy so our Christmas wind up has been brought forward. Andy will carry on and he says he will still call a plus bracket for us.
Our Christmas dance will be on November 20th, our last dance will be on December 4th and our B-B-Q will be held on December 11th.
Pat presented Kevin with a big rosette for 'patience and tolerance' of our dancers. Congratulations to Peggy on being awarded our Life Membership Award. We hope you are still dancing with us for the next twenty years.
Next Year, we are having our opening picnic at South Perth near the ferry terminus on Sunday 4th February and we resume dancing on Monday 5th February. Our Birthday Dance will be on 19th March with an Hawaiian Theme.
Happy dancing, Janice

Hi one and all
Rather a short report this month as I am
penning this mid-October in order to meet the 20th of the month deadline, as we will be away from Perth from Monday heading to Bunbury via Beverly to attend the State Festival—as indeed many square dancers will be doing the same towards the end of the week. As has been the case probably at most Clubs, we have been fine turning our “dress set” gear to be in line with the “Hi Viz” theme of the weekend. Looking forward to a very colourful dress set parade.
Club wise, it has been relatively quiet at Dianella Rangers, both at Club nights and socially. Referring to the latter, I did mention in the September issue of the Squaring Around, that a walking ramble around Guildford had been scheduled for late September. However, the weather man put a hold to that activity with extremely bad storms predicted for the outing, so no report on that this month. Definitely a “goer” this weekend – lots of sunshine predicted.
Our cultural theatre outing will take place over the next couple of weeks, so more on that also next month.
On Wednesday 4th – we welcomed back to Club Diane and Peter Thomas. They had not been dancing for five months as Peter had experienced a fall that resulted in a major shoulder problem. At last Peter was given the “all clear” to return to dancing, and quite coincidently on his return he received his “loyalty certificate’ of 900 nights of dancing at Dianella Rangers. Well-earned Pete, and enjoy your dancing once again.
Christmas Dance dates are already appearing in the Squaring Around. Don’t forget to wind up your Club visits celebrating the Season, by attending the last Christmas Dance of the year at Dianella Rangers – Wednesday 20th December 2017.
Also planning ahead somewhat into 2018 we anticipate hosting a dance late January, with Brian Hotchkies as our visiting caller. Watch for more details in the December issue. For the present – enjoy your dancing and treasure your friendships.
Yours in friendship – Joy F.

Our condolences go to Barbara Clackson on the passing of Richard Clackson on 10/10/2017. Richard will be sadly missed as we remember fondly the many outings he and Barbara attended over many years with Greenfinches. Always enthusiastic to help, join in, attend as many square dance related activities far and wide while taking copious quantities of photos to remember all his wonderful travels.
Welcome to new members Stan & Maureen Ball who have been attending as often as their busy schedule allows J Wishing Neville T a speedy recovery from his recent health problems. Carol & Rick Mason from NSW visited Greenfinches and had great dance with four sets on the floor rocking to Steve Turners calling.
Carol & Rick along with some 180 enthusiastic dancers, including many from Greenfinches, are on their way to our State Square Dance Festival in Bunbury. We know everyone who attends will have a fun weekend. Now we are full on into the busy season of fun & friendship set to music with a Halloween Dance on 31/10/2017, Melbourne Cup Dance 7/11/2017, Introduction Dance Night 14/11/2017 and our Christmas Dance 5/12/2017 along with all the many other festive season club dances to enjoy.

Hi Everyone,
Firstly, I would like to thank Ian Bailey for
all his efforts in producing The Squaring Around for the last few years. He did a fantastic job. I hope he enjoys his retirement and wish him all the best in the work he has taken on for The National Convention next April.
Our Pink night was a great success; balloons were the main decorations some even had spots on. They looked good. Everyone was wearing something pink. Most of the men had pink shirts, the ladies had skirts or tops in different shades of pink and it made a really nice atmosphere. There was a good set of Plus dancers and they were swapping in and out. Three sets of mainstream, with a few over. It was good to see Gwen & Frank back from their journey around Australia. They haven’t finished yet, and are off again after Christmas, the lucky devils.
FOOTY FEVER was the following week Adelaide Crows versus Richmond for the Grand Final. The walls were once again adorned with appropriate coloured
balloons for each team. There was a lot of bantering amongst the dancers as to which team would win. At 8:30pm Quarter Time was called and out came the Hot Dogs and Oranges Yum Yum!! Everyone enjoyed them. Most of the dancers thought Richmond would win, but a valiant few said Adelaide as they won more games through the year. Us Richmond believers were Triumphant. Carl and Margaret returned to the fray. Carl has been off-colour for a while but is back to his old self again. First night back and he won the Jackpot $20.00. No one has won it since and it’s up to $30.00 next week, (three quarters of a carton).
At the recent Beginners Ball our member Annette graduated. We are very proud as she is a good member with a great personality, and always willing to help out. Also our Committee Member Maz is back, she has had time out, as she was Mastering a new position in the work force, There are jobs waiting for her at the club, she does not know about yet!!
We have started our Melbourne Cup Sweeps as we are closed on NOVEMBER 3rd for Wongan Hills Birthday Dance. There is a lot of travelling going on, Hi- Viz Festival in Bunbury this Weekend. Really looking forward to it. Gnomes and All are going. Square Dancing in WA seems to be getting a revival.

Well folks, how do you feel now that the weather is warming up a bit? Oh, it won’t be long before we hear complaints about how hot it is. But have you noticed – nothing stops the dancing? Well, we could mention that a few nomads head north in the depths of winter. Whatever happened to the traditional stiff upper lip and the exhortation, “Carry on regardless, chaps?”
Monday nights are going well. One night Richard called trade the wave 1 1⁄2, wondering what would happen on the floor. He leapt with joy when the floor did what he was hoping. Isn’t it nice to bring pleasure to people?
We are seeing a couple of sets on Thursday nights. One night Colin claimed that he was number 2 when he was actually number 4, that created great confusion for Richard when he tried to get the sets back in order. But how dare he complain – he had his month’s share of pleasure on Monday. On a number of occasions Kevin has been seen to take up the position of left hand dancer, and it has been suggested that we pass the hat around so he can get a nice perm.
It is a sad fact that life decrees we cannot always maintain a state of good health. Maureen’s legs have been playing up so much she has had to forgo dancing, and we can report that this has brought her to a state of forlorn. Janet has had an operation, and it is quite likely that she will not be back dancing until next year. We wish you a speedy recovery..
This month we highlight Patsy. She started dancing somewhere around 1982, and learnt with the Silver Knights club, instructed by Bruce Gillett. For her first lesson, Gil agreed to go along and accompany her, and we are assured that there were no threats involved. After this they both took up the dancing with enthusiasm. And you will be well aware that the dancing has continued unabated since.
Later on, Patsy decided to take up plus. Her instructor was Paul Long, who we are told wanted to learn to call plus. You can’t argue that he has achieved success. Patsy succeeded equally well to dance plus. Today Patsy is an invaluable member of

At the time of writing we are in final stages of preparing for the Bunbury Hi Viz festival. In fact, we are one day away. Equipment is being checked, handouts are being printed, food is being prepared for Saturday dinner – it is all so close now. But of course by the time you read this – it would all be over. We hope you had a good trip to Bunbury and had some happy dancing.
Requests since last news have been: Hey Baby, Danny Boy, Sweet Caroline, Small World, I shall not be moved, Beautiful noise, Don't it make your brown eyes blue, Delta Queen.
Of course most of our news is about to happen this weekend and will have to be in next issue. We did have 12 extra visitors last night Jo-Anne, Ian, Rene, Stan, Maureen, Colin, Dolores, Ted, Rose, Tony, Chris, Molly, Louis and Diane wearing various badges from
20th Club Function
Page 15
the White Gum Valley club and committee. But she is seen at a number of other clubs including Kiwilers.
Patsy remembers the 84th convention in Perth, and since then has been to many other national conventions around the country. She recalls that the coldest of the lot was Wodonga in 2010, and here we can support her claim that it was truly cold. With ice on the pavements in the morning. Naturally, she will be seen at the Perth convention next year.
Her 2018 calendar is filling up. Among her many commitments is a granddaughter’s wedding in Bali, to take place not far from a raging volcano. Apparently there is no sense of apprehension. Somehow though there are still a few nights left for dancing. The highlight of square dancing for Patsy is the company of the other dancers – meeting people and having fun with them.
Happy birthday to Trish, Maureen C., Joy, Patsy and John F.. and Corinne– surely they celebrate birthdays in Croatia. We congratulate Marylin and Murray and Colleen and Virgil who will be celebrating wedding anniversaries.

Our last week in September seemed to have an invisible spider somewhere as the dancers were getting quite tangled up in a ‘cobweb’ and not dancing what the caller (Bruce) was calling. But even then Bruce got caught up with the ‘cobwebs’ with his calling, much to the amusement of all.
Jean has had a fight with her hose and had a nasty fall which hurt her knee, but this has not stopped her dancing thank goodness.
Kevin and Bev have green fingers and have bought in home grown silver beet for us to take home. And to the delight of all Barbara (our other caller) made a delicious silver beet pie for us to feast on. Much appreciated by all.
Some nights our clever Bruce kept our small group dancing by having two lots of sides – so giving the 12 or so people a dance, instead of the usual 8 required for a square. We mostly danced what he called – we believe in giving him a challenge!!

Our ‘Odd Socks Day’ dance attracted many colourful dancers. The courageous display of ankles

and legs in a variety of colours, textures, patterns and dimensions indicated that all the dancers were pleased to pose and expose. Fortunately, caller Steve was not distracted from his role and provided an evening of dancing that challenged all, and occasionally himself.
The Introductory Dance Night saw 8 new and keen dancers try out the Northern Stars hospitality. Paul had them all dancing ably throughout the evening. Several of them expressed interest in joining the new learners’ classes in November. A similar event is scheduled for November 11.
The Beginner’s Ball hosted by Jim Buckingham and Allemanders SDC was an afternoon of dancing, glamour, passion and good company .There were many callers present who took to the microphone to provide challenge to the new dancers by varying the tempo, dance combinations and musical arrangements. The afternoon was a great success and epitomised the spirit and philosophy associated with the Square Dancing community. Thanks Allemanders, and congratulations to our members who graduated on the afternoon.
‘All I Want For Christmas Is ...’ is the theme for our Christmas Dance on Saturday 16 December. Please come along and contribute to the festivities and fun as our three callers, Jim, Steve and Paul, mesmerize us with their melodic carolling. You can put your Christmas wish into Santa’s letterbox (as long as you want it to be revealed). Come dressed as your wish, come dressed in Christmas gear, come dressed. Reminder: All our dancing commences at 8 pm.
Consideration of the month: Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.

I don’t think I’m saying anything new but when will winter be over? Certainly that has to be said for Mondays. It seems like wet, windy and cold have been the norm for a few months now.
Roll on spring or even a bit of summer, please. Thanks to those dancers who have braved the elements and turned up to dancing anyway.
So far our club hasn’t hit any futher news about the (imminent?) renovations to the hall that we
have been expecting to commence, so we will continue to dance as normal. We will let everyone know if things suddenly change. However, we’ve been waiting a few years now.
Accordingly our Chirstmas plans are a little topsy-turvy for the moment. However, other clubs may see us travelling around joining in the festivities and instead we will return on a real humdinger of a Chinese New Year celebration on February 19th, 2018. Dog On- as the year of the dog anything ‘dog’ is the theme but we promise no dog food for supper only the very best Chinese cuisine will do. Mark it on your calendar. No need for dinner we will be eating after the first dance so no chance of indigestion wither.
Don’t hesitate to phone either Trish or myself (0419 927 633) if you are heading the Cannington way to check if there are changing to our dancing plans. Hope to see many of you in the hurry-scurry of the pre-Christmas whirl.

Swan Valley Squares
Caller: Greg Fawell President: Doug Bush Dance: Friday 8:00pm
Hi everyone
Spring must be infectious (who mentioned the
dreaded flu?) coz there’s an extra spring in the step of Swan Valley dancers, following the graduation of a number of our new dancers, who have successfully completed the Club 50 programme.
Our happy graduates are: Arlene and Keith Hindley; Bryan Hill; Dorothy Cameron; Jill Dunnette, Trish Hendrick and Helga Jones (ambidextrous now she’s graduated as a right hand dancer, in addition to her existing left hand proficiency). Our warmest congratulations to one and all. Please make them welcome if you see them in a square.
In fact, most of our graduates attended Allemanders Square’s Beginner’s Ball. This was another very successful event, with eight or nine squares dancing all afternoon. It is very important for new dancers to have the opportunity to ‘spread their wings’ in a supportive and welcoming environment, so sincere thanks to Jim and Leila and all the Allemanders members for putting on such an enjoyable event.
Many of us headed down to Bunbury for the State Square Dance Festival, where we hope to be highly visible (in the best possible way).
Accordingly, please note that Swan Valley Squares will be closed on Friday
20 October.
While Swan Valley will also be represented at the Wongan Hills weekend, the Swan Valley club will
dance as usual on Friday 3 November for those clubs which may be closed.
SAVE THE DATE!
We love to kick off the fabulous round of club Christmas dances, so please make a note to come and share in some fun and friendship set to music on Friday 1 December. Swan Valley will then close, re- opening on 19 January 2018.
On 26 January there will be a very special birthday celebration at Swan Valley, along of course with Australia Day. It’ll be a blast, so be sure to save that date too! Comings and goings; .All our dancers are now back on deck, including our Welsh Wonder, our longstanding members and frequent club host, Anne Wakeling. However, we now say ‘bon voyage’ to John and Amy, who are setting off on another adventure. We look forward to their return in the Christmas party season.
And on that note, it’s time for me to say farewell too!

Ups ‘n’ Downers
Callers: Keith Lethbridge & Trish Holloway Dance: Tuesday 8:00pm
Another stormy month which did not deter dancers from coming out and each week two sets and a few over. We had a couple of sad events: VALE Rita Brandwood and VALE Mrs Bell, our sympathies to their families and kind wishes in this sad time for them.
Tuesday the 10th October saw our numbers swell with a visit from Astly Care evening group brought in by Neil and Lorraine, they were dressed in their cowboy outfits and those that were able had a dance, was very enjoyable with Keith giving one of his bush poems, very enjoyable evening

Wanneroo Square Dancers
Caller; Philip Hartley
Dance: Wednesday 8:00pm
What a turbulent couple of months it's been, the club has been down on numbers, and we've been scratching our heads on how to get new learners to build the club to at least a set.
We refuse to close the doors on the club as the rumour say's we have. I am there every Wednesday night, with a few of our new dancers, who want to learn to dance. So I placed an ad on a community Facebook page, with the response I have had from my Facebook ad which is also in Dancing in
Cheers
Page 17
the Community seems to have gotten not only around Wanneroo and surrounding areas, but the world as I am receiving comments from everywhere Facebook goes to. In the first couple of days we had over 80 comments, and most of them come from the local areas.
A couple of days after placing the ad with Facebook, I put the add in Australian Squaredance Society Page, the response I received back was unexpected, from callers and dancers around the world.
We just want feet on the floor, it does not matter how many likes one gets on Facebook it's not the same as dancers on the floor, if anybody has an idea on how to get more dancers we as a club are listening.

Some of us, as I type are heading to Bunbury with our gnome packed safely in tow, with a list of must haves high vis? check, hats? check, dance outfits? check full of excitement? check. We are so looking forward to the weekend and catching up with fellow dancers and having fun.
Some of us have enjoyed a fabulous night at Gidgegannup with some tricky moves Alan! It was a first time for one of our members and although a little nervous, Jessica thoroughly enjoyed her night.
Spring has well and truly sprung. Reynoldson Reserve is in bloom, wildflowers flowering and crops are getting close to being harvested. Hay season in full swing.
Our 41st Garden Party birthday is only days away and we look forward to treating those of you who are coming to a wonderful weekend of dancing. We have sent details of the planned events confirming times, prices and scheduling via emails to every club. Bring your parasols, your prettiest party dress and your dancing shoes. There will be cucumber sandwiches and lots of party food.

Bunbury Square Dance Club Night. As we go to press this event is still to come
In General, We had help from a core of non- dancers who undertook Table decorations and set up, Stage erection and Sunday Barbecue. This assistance allowed our club members to enjoy the weekend. We also had valuable contributions from Stan Ball, Kevin Green and Joanne and Ian Pendlebury and Rene Hardenbol for stage decoration and Table settings. To our club members and members of all other clubs who pitched in and helped where ever they saw a need – Thank You. Twelve lucky number prizes were give out, thanks to our very generous club member donor. Finally, a special thank you to all the callers and the square dancers who supported our event in almost overwhelming numbers and made the Festival a huge success
