The Story of the Coconut Tree
(A Malaysian Folk Tale)
There was once an old man. He was very, very old. Some people said he was a thousand
years old! He was also very wise and he knew many things. Many people came to visit him
in his cave near the sea. They always asked him to help them.
One day, a young man came to see this wise old man.
“O wise father,” said the young man, “I am with them all my life. I want to be rich. How can I do this?”
“Here is a magic box and it will help you. But do not open it before you reach home” said the old wise man.
“If you open it before you reach home something will happen.”
“Thank you, wise father,” said the young man and at once he went out of the cave. As he was curious, he
stopped and opened the box and– it was a coconut tree!
That was his punishment for disobeying the old man, but he still had his wish because the
coconut tree is very useful to people.

One day, a donkey fell into the farmer’s well. After thinking for a while, the farmer felt sorry with the
donkey. He therefore called his neighbours together and told them what had happened. He asked them to
help him to carry soil to bury the old donkey in the well.
The old donkey was not happy. It was angry. But as the farmer and his neighbours continued digging and,
the donkey has an idea. Every time the soil landed on its back; the donkey shakes it off and step up! The
donkey did this again and again.
“Shake it off and step up” the donkey spoke out repeatedly to encourage itself. No matter how painful the
situation seems, the old donkey kept himself strong and continued on shaking it off and stepping up!

Long ago, there were two friends who were farmers. Their names were Ujang and Ramli. They
were best of friends and neighbours too.
One day, when Ujang was digging a well, he found a wooden box buried deep in the ground.
He opened and found gold coins in it. Ujang told Ramli what he had found. He said,
“You are my best friend, I plan to share with you.”. He takes his share and passed it to Ramli the
remaining with the box.Then he went home. When Ramli and his wife saw the gold coins, they became
greedy. They wanted all the gold for themselves. Ramli and his wife imagined what they could do with the
gold. After dinner, they opened the box once more to see the gold coins. To their surprise, the gold coins
suddenly changed into worms. Ramli thought Ujang played a trick on him.
Feeling angry and disappointed, Ramli and his wife took the box and went to Ujang;s house. They came
nearer, they could hear Ujang and his wife talking about their good fortune. Ramli
and his wife became angrier. They wanted to teach Ujang and his wife a lesson. They decided
to climb up the roof. Through a hole on the roof, they emptied the box of worms onto the
couple’s heads.As the worms came down, they changed into gold coins.
