Lohmeyer

“We are unworthy
servants, we have only done

what was our duty.”

- Luke 17:10

Our Story
Judy Ellen Hart was born on April 20, 1945 in Bluefield, WV. She
had two older sisters (Mary and Betty—both are deceased) and a
younger brother, Buddy. The family moved to Ft. Myers, FL when
Judy was 12; Judy returned to WV to attend Greenbrier College for
Women in 1961. In 1963, Judy married her high school sweetheart,
Dick Wiggins. In 1970, they adopted their son, Richard William Wig-
gins, Jr. and in 1972, a daughter Angela Rebecca arrived. Judy and
Dick were very involved with their church, Grace Lutheran, in St.
Petersburg and with the church school where the children attended.
Judy’s long career as a ‘professional volunteer’ really began then.
She was Girl Scout Troop leader, Cub Scout board member,
President of the Parent Teacher League, President of the Riviera
Bay Homeowners Association, serving on many boards and
committees in St. Petersburg. In December of 1984, Dick was
diagnosed with esophagus cancer and after aggressive treatments
and surgeries, died in 1985. When Judy began to recover from her
grief, she again started volunteering, a lot of which was with the
youth of her church.
Richard Gene Lohmeyer grew up on a dairy farm in north central
Kansas, near the town of Linn. He received his early education at
Zion Lutheran School and Linn Rural High School. He was an
active member of the Livewires 4-H club where his projects included
showing dairy cattle, Land Judging and public speaking. He was a
member of the 4-H team that won the 1962 National Land Judging
contest in Oklahoma City.
Much of his early life centered around the activities at Zion Lutheran
Church and School. He served in the U.S. Army and attended
Kansas State University. After farming with his father for 20 years,
he decided to follow God’s call into the pastoral ministry. He would
tell you that he put off that call which came while he was still in
elementary school. “God had to hit me between the ears to get my
attention, before I answered His call”, he would say. That “wake up
call” was a failed marriage which left him and his son, John, on their
own.
Leaving his hometown, he attended Concordia University in north
Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he studied Hebrew and Greek and
majored in history From there he attended Concordia Seminary, St.
Louis, MO where he received his Master of Divinity. It was while
attending the seminary and doing a summer internship at Grace
Lutheran Church and School in St. Petersburg, FL, that he met his
wife, Judy. Upon his graduation from the seminary he was
ordained into the office of Holy Ministry in the Lutheran Church

Missouri Synod. He and Judy were married June 25, 1988, and they
moved to Gulf Breeze, FL where he was called to serve Good
Shepherd Lutheran Church. They would spend 15 years there and
grew the congregation, relocated it along a busy highway, built a new
facility and started a Christian Day School PK—5th grade. During that
time he served in several leadership positions in the church body and
in civic organizations. While at Good Shepherd, Rich received his
Doctor of Ministry degree from Trinity Theological Seminary.
It was shortly after arriving in Gulf Breeze that Rich first said the words
to Judy that they have lived by for 31 years, “ we must move forward
in faith”, a paraphrase of 2 Corinthians 5:7. Judy became very
involved in the ministry and that is where a young girl of the
congregation gave her a name she still treasures and jokes about,
“Mrs. Pastor”. Judy began volunteering at the Gulf Breeze Hospital,
where she served as President of the Volunteers. She was elected to
serve on the Florida State Board Association of Florida Hospital
Auxiliaries and volunteers in 1995. She was elected Florida State
President in 2001, and worked with the Florida Hospital Association
and lobbied for them in Tallahassee, Fl and Washington, DC. Judy
loved traveling for the AFHAV and working with the many wonderful
healthcare volunteers around the state.
After fifteen years of serving Good Shepherd, Rich accepted a Divine
Call to serve as pastor of St. John Lutheran church and School,
Staten Island, NY. St. John was a large congregation with a large
school and staff of 25. Rich spent a lot of time working with the school
providing leadership for the teachers and teaching religious classes.
One of his weekly thrills was leading chapel for more than 300
students who attended St. John School. Judy enjoyed living and
playing in the ‘city’, seeing broadway shows, experiencing different
cultures, riding on the Staten Island ferry and her volunteering which
was centered on the church for those years.
In 2005 Rich and Judy purchased a summer home on the Greenbrier
River in Alderson, WV, where Judy would spend most of each sum-
mer on the river with Rich joining her as often as possible. In 2010
Rich accepted a divine Call from the Board of directors of the Ohio
District to serve as a Mission Pastor and this call included planting a
church in the Greenbrier Valley. They moved to ‘the river’ and the first
meetings and months of services of Christ Our Savior Lutheran
Church were held in their home. This established the only Missouri
Lutheran church in a two hour driving radius. Rich continues to be an
active missionary in the area, teaching Bible classes and building rela-
tionships by serving on many boards and other activities as well. He
has served on the Board of Directors for the Shepherd’s Center of
Greenbrier Valley, the Hospitality House in Alderson and currently

serves as President of the Alderson Lions Club and on the Board of
Directors of the Rainelle Medical Center, Alderson Ministerial
Association and with Judy is Co-President of the Greenbrier Valley
Master Gardeners. He is active along with Judy in many
organizations and actively raisers funds for them. For fund raising he
often uses his cooking skills and is known as ‘Chef Rich’ in the
Alderson community. He supports Communities in Schools each year
by participating in the ‘Men that Cook’ fundraiser. He also often
serves as an auctioneer for fundraising. Rich has taught classes for
Shepherd Center’s Adventures in Learning, most recently a cooking
class.
Judy first started meeting folks in Alderson through her love and pas-
sion for playing Bridge. She loved the small town attitude and the
welcoming manner of the folks in the area. She joined the Blue
Sulphur CEOS and has been very active in the local, county and state
organization. She now serves as Greenbrier County CEOS President
and serves on the WVCEOS state board as the Beckley Area
Representative. Judy serves as President of the Alderson Library
Board of Trustees and on the Board of Directors of the Alderson
Community Center. She served for several years on the Greenbrier
Health alliance board. Judy was elected President of Alderson Main
Street in 2019 and loves being a part of all that is going on in
Alderson. Judy’s biggest heart jobs are when she can help those in
need. She volunteers at the Alderson Food Pantry each month. Rich
and Judy have been the principle force for the past 7 years hosting in
Alderson a high school mission team from Faith Lutheran in Troy,
Michigan. This group is usually around 70 high school youth and
adults who provide all the materials and labor for building and repair
work for projects from new roofs, handicap ramps to cleaning yards.
Rich is the project coordinator who locates projects and oversees all
that is necessary for completion. Judy Plans all the menus, buys the
food and directs the preparation for three meals a day for the group at
the Alderson community Center. It is exhausting, but so very
rewarding and so very rewarding and such a joy. Luke 17:10 “We
are unworthy servants, we have only done what was our duty” is
another of the Lohmeyer’s favorite scriptures that inspires them to
continue on.
Judy and Rich became part of the RVing world in 2013 and love
getting away in their motor home and seeing the county. Judy loves
to kayak on the river, her plants in the summer fill the decks and yard
with blooms, and see encourages all the birds to fill their yard year
round with an endless supply of food. Judy tries to be sure not one of
the stray cats that find their way to their house goes hungry or doesn’t
have a warm bed for winter. She has worked with Friends of Ferrell
and has captured over 20 cats for neuter/spay and shots. Rich starts

reading seed catalogs in the fall, ordering seeds and planning his
garden, starting most plants from seeds. He spends endless hours
preparing and keeping things going in the garden. Weather
permitting, you will find Rich and Judy on the deck in the morning for
coffee and the evening glass of wine in the company of a host of
birds, cats and a fish jumping ever now and then. Oh yes, Maggie,
(the Jack Russell ruler of their lives) is always close by.
Rick Wiggins lives in St. Petersburg, Fl and will marry Jowita
Slowinska on May 3, 2020, with Rich officiating. Angie married
Bobby Heidrich in 2009 and became Mom to his daughter, Faith
Elizabeth who will graduate from high school in May. John
Lohmeyer lives in Pensacola, FL and is a massage therapist.
Thinking of them always brings to mind another favorite scripture of
Judy’s—Luke 2:19 “Mary treasured all of these things pondering
them in her heart”. Family is such a blessing!
At Rich’s installation as pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran church in
1988 a retired pastor told him, “Rich, just make sure you stay out of
God’s Way.” In the end, it is God working through us, as we serve
in our communities. And it is Christ we are serving when we serve
our neighbor as Dr. Martin Luther said: “In our neighbor we have
Christ!”
“We are truly so humbled and feel so undeserving of this honor by
the Shepherd’s Center of Greenbrier Valley. Thank you for your
faith in us. In the end it is ALL OF US working together that makes it
happen.”

Thank you for attending and
supporting Shepherd’s Center

Dear Friends & Family,
We want to take this opportunity to express our thanks
for your confidence in us and for bestowing upon us
this extraordinary honor. Words cannot begin to
express our gratitude for the faith the Shepherd’s
Center and its leadership has in us. Believe us, when
we say, that it is a very humbling experience. We say
that because serving others is what we believe we are
called to do! In addition, we believe that it is our place
to do we can do to make the communities we live in a
better place to live. We realize that anything we do,
we do solely by the grace of God who gives us life and
with His blessings.
The Shepherd’s Center has provided us with an
opportunity to serve, and for that opportunity we are so
grateful. The Shepherd’s Center is truly a wonderful
asset to our community, and we are proud to be part of
all they do.
Finally, we want to thank everyone who has supported
our efforts. Without the support of others, our success
would be minimal. But if we all rally around a common
goal we make our communities a better place to live,
work and play.
‘Thank you’ again for this honor! May God bless and
keep!

The Shepherd’s Center
of Greenbrier Valley

Mission Statement:
Shepherd’s Center at Greenbrier Valley is an interfaith
ministry to sustain mature adults to live independently by
providing opportunities for lifelong learning, community

service, caring relationships and spiritual growth.
Shepherd’s Center Programs:

Friendly Caller Program - We initiated an updated program with
48 recipients and 36 volunteers calling and making sure our home
bound older adults are doing well. It is a great time to chat and
develop new friendships.
Adventures in Learning - Our Spring session was cut short due to
the COVID-19 pandemic and our Fall session will be virtual event
with six weeks of classes for all to enjoy. Go to our website to
register for this session. Classes begin the end of September.
Transportation Services - Our transportation service is now taking
our older adults to medical appointments, picking up groceries, etc.
Many still are not going out so requests have been at a minimum.
Gwen’s Meal Delivery - Delivery of a home cooked meal has not
stopped during this time of the virus. Churches have been preparing
the meals and our drivers are delivering. We are now delivering 110
meals each week for eastern and western Greenbrier County.
Information, Referral and Counseling - The SCGV office is
opened five days per week to take the numerous calls for
assistance in senior matters. We partner with local organizations if
there is a service we are unable to provide.
Handyman/Community Helpers - Volunteers help recipients with
minor repair projects, changing light bulbs or smoke detector
batteries, wheelchair ramps, grab bars, etc. to help them stay in
their homes safely.

As people age and add days to their lives
Shepherd’s Center adds life to their days.
We ALWAYS need volunteers and if you would like to join our
Shepherd’s Center family, just give us a call! Likewise, if you
know of anyone who might need our services, call our office.
