Keynote Speaker - Buck Cole
Buck Cole is a native of
Waco, an Air Force veteran,
a graduate of St. Edwards
University, and a former
7th grade Texas history
teacher, retiring in 2009.
Since his retirement from
the classroom Buck has
been the K-12 Education
Outreach coordinator for
the Texas General Land
Office Archives. His job
includes introducing the
35 million documents and
45 thousand maps of the
GLO Archives to teachers,
students, and civic
groups. Buck also writes
curriculum and creates and
conducts hands-on workshops for teachers across the state, and directs the
K-12 education efforts for the Texas GLOs Save Texas History program.

Cedar B What does Kashrut (Kosher) Mean? (Gr. 6-12)
Rabbi Learner One of the most well-known of all Jewish religious practices is that of eating only foods
that are “kosher.” The Hebrew word “kosher” literally means “fit”, so the laws of kosher
define the foods that are fit for consumption for a Jew. This includes which animals are
consumed, how food is prepared, and even how and when it is served. This session will give
you a general description of Kosher, examples of some of the Jewish observances, and their
biblical and historical references.

have a ripple effect. Every decision has an intended consequence, but how do we predict those

letters, diaries and other first person accounts of the Civil War) and other educational

Oak Land and Legacy (Gr. 4-8)
Buck Cole It is impossible to separate land history from Texas history. Without the promise of cheap,
abundant land in Mexican Texas, Anglo colonization may not have occurred on such a large
General Land Office scale with all of its resulting opportunities and conflicts. This session will introduce
(GLO) the rich primary sources of the Texas GLO Archives, from the original land grants to the
personal letters of soldiers and settlers that help shaped the story of Texas.

house, interpretive garden, hands-on museum and new programs engage teachers
