caring in the community

As leaders in the retail health care industry in Canada, Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix has a
special interest in the health and well-being of Canadians in communities across the country. We
firmly believe that leadership as corporate citizens in promoting and supporting the lives of
Canadians is a fundamental facet of leadership in our industry. Our core beliefs and values reflect
this commitment, as does our corporate donations and sponsorship policy. We are proud of the
contributions and support that we provided in 2001 to numerous charitable, health care, education
and community causes across Canada.
Not surprisingly, our primary focus is the financial and emotional support of health care charities
and education, with a special emphasis on the advancement of pharmacy – the caring profession
that is at the heart of Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix. We have taken a leadership position at all
nine Faculties of Pharmacy at Canadian universities, with major capital donations for facilities,
equipment and Chairs of Pharmacy, as well as scholarships and awards to support pharmacy
students. In 2001, in addition to our ongoing support of pharmacy education across Canada, we
made a further commitment to the University of Toronto Faculty of Pharmacy for the establishment
of the Herbert R. Binder/Shoppers Drug Mart Practice Laboratory – to honour the retirement of our
former President. Our corporate commitment of $1 million was more than matched by funds
donated by Associates, employees and our supplier community, bringing the total to $3.4 million.
Among our major health care commitments in 2001, we were significant supporters of: the
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation of Canada, with whom we sponsored the Shoppers Walk
for the Cure and helped raise over $6 million; the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, which we
supported with far-reaching awareness and educational initiatives in addition to our corporate
donations; and colorectal cancer screening and research initiatives, for which we developed a
dedicated HealthWatch® information brochure.
Our commitment to social responsibility is shared by thousands of Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix
employees and Associates who donate their time and money generously to the communities where
we work and live. We celebrate volunteerism and community participation and strive to reflect these
values in the way we conduct our business and invest in the future.

Charities that Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix supported in 2001 include:
ALZHEIMER SOCIETY • ARTHRITIS SOCIETY • CANADIAN BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION • CANADIAN MARFAN SYNDROME
ASSOCIATION • CANADIAN NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR THE BLIND • COUNCIL ON DRUG ABUSE • CROHN’S AND COLITIS FOUNDATION
OF CANADA • DIABETES HOPE FOUNDATION • EASTER SEAL SOCIETY • TOURETTE SYNDROME FOUNDATION OF CANADA
