Quick Learn
Input is the way of entering the data to computer to
perform the tasks.
The input is possible with the help of input devices
only.
Input devices are used to give data and instructions
to the computer.
An input device is also a hardware device that sends
data to a computer.
There are two popular input devices, they are
mouse and keyboard.
A mouse is a popular input pointing device.
A mouse is an electro-mechanical, handheld device.
A mouse is connected to a computer system using a
cable or a wireless connection.
Holding way of the mouse
To hold the mouse, use the following tips.
Keep your thumb on the side of the mouse and your
index finger on the left button and middle finger on the
right button.
New Gateway to Computer Science Book - Three 1551
Keep the mouse at the same height as the keyboard.
Use a programmable mouse to distribute the work
between your thumb and fingers.
Keep your mouse balls clean to minimize the effort.
Take frequent breaks in using the mouse intensively, at
least 10 minutes every hour.
Keep your hands warm.
Keep the mouse close to you. The arms should be relaxed
at your side with the elbow at a right angle and the wrist
straight.
Keyboard:
It is a commonly used input
device. All computer users must
have a keyboard. It is a typing
device. The keyboard is the piece
of computer hardware used to
input text, characters, and other commands into a computer.
5522 New Gateway to Computer Science Book - Three
A keyboard is an external
peripheral device in a desktop
system (it is placed outside the
main computer housing). A
keyboard is connected to a
computer system using a cable or
a wireless connection.
Understanding the keys of a keyboard
Escape Key
The Escape (Esc) key allows you to stop a function
or action. For example, if a computer is taking a long time to
load, you can press the Escape key to stop loading it.
Function Keys
The function keys are labelled from F1 to F12. Some programs
use these keys as shortcuts for common tasks.
Print Screen, Scroll Lock, Pause/Break
The Print Screen, Scroll Lock, and Pause/
Break keys are located at the top-right
corner of the keyboard. The Print Screen
key takes a picture of your screen (screenshot) that you can
edit or save using a graphics program.
New Gateway to Computer Science Book - Three 5353
Backspace Key
The Backspace key erases the character
to the left of the cursor.
Insert key
This key switches between insert mode (which inserts new
text without deleting anything) and over type mode (which
deletes text after the cursor as you type).
Delete key
This erases the character to the
right of the cursor.
Home and End
These keys move the cursor to the beginning or end of the
current line.
Page Up and Page Down
These keys help to scroll a document up or down of the screen.
Enter Key
This key is used to start a new line in word
processing programs.
5544 New Gateway to Computer Science Book - Three
Arrow Keys
The arrow keys are used for many different
purposes, including moving the cursor,
scrolling a document, and even controlling
a game.
Numeric Keypad
The numeric keypad resembles a calculator
keypad. Many users find that it is easier to
type numbers using this keypad.
Ctrl, Alt, and Shift
The Control (Ctrl), Alternate (Alt),
and Shift keys are designed to work
in combination with other keys. Typically, you need to hold
down Ctrl, Alt, or Shift and then type another key to perform
a specific task.
Spacebar Key
This is the longest key of the
keyboard. It is used to put the
space between the word(s). It is located at the button of the
keyboard.

Output Devices:
Output devices are used to display the result after
processing. The output displayed by the computer is always
meaningful. When a user inputs the data with the help of
input devices, it goes for processing and after processing, the
result will be displayed on the output devices.
5588 New Gateway to Computer Science Book - Three
Some common types of output devices are Monitor, Printer,
Speaker, etc. Among the various output devices, monitor
is the most essential output device of a computer system
without which we cannot see any result.
Monitor
The monitor is a computer
hardware that displays the result on
the screen. The output displayed by
monitor is called soft copy output. A
monitor looks similar to televisions
but it displays information in a higher resolution. A monitor
is also called as a screen, display, video display, video display
terminal, video display unit, or video screen.
Printer
A printer is an output device that
produces text and graphics on
paper. Printed information is called
as hard copy output. The printing
speed of a printer is measured
in ppm (pages per minute). The
resolution of a printer is measured in dpi (dots per inch).

Speaker
Speakers are popular output devices used in a computer
systems. With the help of a speaker, we can listen to music
and songs from the computer system. A speaker is also a

Dear students,
You should know how to handle
the parts of a computer properly.
If you do not handle the parts of a
computer in proper manner, your
computer may get serious problems
and may not work properly. There may
occur various health problems as well. You always
have to place computer at proper place. Let’s read
the given conversation to know it in details.
It was Friday afternoon. All the students of grade three
were busy on sports activities of the school. Mr.Dipu
and Monalisha were suffering from common cold, so
they were inside the classroom. During this time, they
were discussing something about the computer.
7744 New Gateway to Computer Science Book - Three
Monalisha ! Do you have
computer at your home?
Yes, I have. I learn so many things
in computer with my sister.
Do you know? My father brought
a computer yesterday for me and my
brother. My brother works so properly
with the computer, but I cannot work.
I don’t know even how to arrange the
computer, correct way of using mouse and
keyboard and the good habits while working
with the computer.
Don't worry,Dipu! My father told 5757
me all those things a few days ago.
May I help you?
New Gateway to Computer Science Book - Three
If so Monalisha, I want to know
about it. Will you please tell me?
Sure, why not? First I will tell you how
to arrange the parts of a computer in
proper manner, okey!
Okey! That's very nice of you.
Always place your computer in a properly
ventilated area with sufficient light.
Place your monitor,keyboard and mouse
in a suitable height which you feel comfort.
The place where you keep keyboard and
mouse should be at the equal place and both of
them should be near with each other.
Always keep the keyboard and mouse in front of
the monitor screen.
You must have mouse pad so that you can smoothly
move the position of mouse.
You have to use suitable chair according to your
height so that you can work easily.
7766 New Gateway to Computer Science Book - Three
Oh yeah! I got it. Now, would you
please tell me how to use a computer
mouse?
According to my father while
working with mouse, we have to
hold it correctly.
Please tell me, I want to know it.
Place your thumb on the left side (corner)
of the mouse.
Your index finger (pointer) should rest
on the left button of the mouse.
Place your middle finger on the right button of the
mouse.
Your ring finger and little finger should rest on the
right side of the mouse.
Your palm should cup the end of the mouse gently.
The base of your wrist should rest on the mouse
pad or the desktop.
New Gateway to Computer Science Book - Three 7777
Thank you my friend, you are great!
Will you tell me how to use keyboard in
proper way?
Yes, I am going to tell it now. Listen carefully.
Sit with good posture. Place your
keyboard at elbow level.
Center your keyboard in front of you.
Your hands should float above the keys while
typing.
Do not press the keys of the keyboard hardly just
them press in a soft way.
Relax your hands when you are not working with
computer.
Always use your both hands and all fingers while
typing.
You are my good and true friend,
Monalisha! I am so happy. Thanks for
your invaluable information.
7788 New Gateway to Computer Science Book - Three
It’s my pleasure. Do you want to
know the good habits while working
with a computer also?
Of course! I want.
While working with a computer, you
should have good posture. If your posture
is not good, you may feel various pain
on your wrist, fingers, neck, backbone,
arms etc. So Dipu, you have to follow
the various tips.
Yes, this is the most important thing for
me. Please tell me in detail.
New Gateway to Computer Science Book - Three 7997
