WELCOME TO ADULT LEARNING

As we put the hectic holiday season behind us and hunker down to wait for spring, it is a
great time to peruse our catalog looking for learning opportunities to help fill those long
winter nights. Whether it is upgrading a skill to enhance your career, taking a class that
gets the creative juices flowing, or just checking an experience off the bucket list, we
have the class for you. Once again you will see a broad range of enrichment classes,
along with classes aimed at helping advance your career.

As always, we have a mix of tried and true favorites and new additions, hopefully some-
thing that piques your interest, giving you a reason to venture to the LISD TECH Center
on that cold winter night, or balmy spring evening. Some of our new additions include:
Medical Billing and Coding, Backyard Chickens, Bread Baking, Intermediate Knitting,
Introduction to Scrapbooking, Introduction to Twitter and Instagram, to name a few.

Also new this course guide is a section highlighting other enrichment courses offered
here in Lenawee County. We are lucky to have many great local enrichment opportuni-
ties. In a spirit of partnership and collaboration, and our mission to serve Lenawee
County citizens, we want to be sure you are informed. Our partnering organizations
have also agreed to help promote courses offered through Adult Learning Services
@LISD TECH Center.

HEALTH CARE

Since 1993, Condensed Curriculum International (CCI) has supported leading
healthcare education and training programs in partnership with community colleges and
universities. CCI currently has over 300 partnerships operating in 40 states offering
innovative, classroom-based health care education programs. Look for the CCI logo for
CCI designated courses.

CLINICAL MEDICAL ASSISTANT

This program is intended for students who want to prepare for an exciting, challenging,

and rewarding career in healthcare. This program will train students to assist physicians
by performing functions related to the clinical responsibilities of a medical office. Instruc-
tion includes preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory proce-
dures, diagnostic testing, technical aspects of phlebotomy, and the cardiac life cycle.
Students will review important topics such as phlebotomy, pharmacology, the proper use

and administration of medications, taking and documenting vital signs, cardiology—
including proper lead placements, professional workplace behavior, ethics, and the legal
aspects of healthcare. Program includes 140 hours of classroom lecture and hands-on
labs, and a clinical externship opportunity at a local healthcare provider. To be eligible
for clinical rotation, students must successfully complete the 140 hour program, submit

to a thorough background check, drug screening, and meet other requirements. Note:
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be eligible to sit for the Nation-
al Health Career Association (NHA) Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) national
examination.

PHARMACY TECHNICIAN

This comprehensive 50-hour program will prepare students to work as a pharmacy tech-

nician in a retail or other pharmacy setting and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certifi-
cation Board (PTCB) exam. Course content includes pharmacy medical terminology,
the history of pharmacy, the pharmacy practice in multiple environments, pharmacy cal-
culations and measurements, reading and interpreting prescriptions, and defining drugs
by generic and brand names. Through classroom lecture and hands-on labs, students

will review dosage calculations, drug classifications, the “top 200 drugs”, I.V. flow rates,
sterile compounding, dose conversions, aseptic technique, the handling of sterile prod-
ucts, total parental nutrition (TPN), dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control, and
billing and reimbursement.

CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT
Nursing Assistants provide direct personal care to patients in various health care set-
tings. Classes will be held in the LISD classroom at ProMedica Bixby Hospital with clini-
cal instruction at a long term care facility. Those successfully completing the program
will be eligible for State Certification testing. 80 hours—course dates vary. Call for

DENTAL ASSISTANT

Obtain entry-level skills in the dental assisting field with this fast-paced course. In our

This combined 80-hour billing and coding course offers the skills needed to solve insur-

ance billing problems, how to manually file claims (using the CPT and ICD-10 manual),
complete common insurance forms, trace delinquent claims, appeal denied claims, and
use generic forms to streamline billing procedures. The course covers the following
areas: CPT (Introduction, Guideline, Evaluation, and Management), specialty fields
(such as surgery, radiology, and laboratory), ICD-10 (Introduction and Guidelines) and

basic claims processes for medical insurance and third party reimbursements. Students
will learn how to find the service and codes using manuals (CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS).
Note: After obtaining the practical work experience (6 months to 2 years), students who
complete this course could be qualified to sit for the American Academy of Professional
Coders (AAPC) - Certified Professional Coder Exam (CPC or CPC-H Apprentice); the

WELDING TECHNOLOGY 1: INTRO
Start with the basics of welding and safety procedures. Focus will be on lab safety,

If you like fresh sausage, you will love smoked sausage. Using beef and pork, prepare
pepperoni, bologna, and hunters sausage during class. The instructor will have the sau-

HOME CANNING 101
Home canning is a great way to preserve garden produce and fresh berries that can be
enjoyed for many seasons to come. This hands-on course will teach you how to do this
safely and correctly. You will receive a quart of tomatoes, a pint each of pressure
cooked carrots and beans, and an eight ounce jar of strawberry jam. Canning book and

all supplies included. It is recommended that you bring a small cooler to transport jars
home.

MOTORCYCLE SAFETY COURSES

Program funding
The motorcycle safety education courses are conducted with State
funds from a motorcycle safety grant administered by the Michigan
Department of State. Licensing fees paid by Michigan’s motorcy-
clists fund the grant.

MOTORCYCLE RIDER AND SAFETY COURSE: POLICY & REQUIREMENTS
There will be NO REFUNDS, TRANSFERS, or DISCOUNTS for these courses.

If you are tardy, you will not be allowed in class. You must attend all class sessions and pass all
written and riding skills tests to successfully complete the class. Items to bring to each day of
class: driver’s license or driver’s certificate, basic eCourse Certificate (for Basic Rider Course),
parental waiver (if you are under 18), sack lunch & water bottle, pen or pencil, highlighter, folding
chair (optional). Students in all classes must wear proper riding attire while on the riding range.
This includes: DOT-approved, properly fitted helmet, long sleeve jacket or heavy shirt, heavy duty
long pants, eye protection-goggles or glasses (required even with a face shield helmet), full fin-
gered gloves, hard sole over-the-ankle boots (high heels or high-top tennis shoes not permitted),
rain gear (if necessary), change of clothing if it’s hot or wet (optional), hat to protect you from sun
when not riding (optional). The instructor has the final decision on the acceptability of student-
provided equipment. Students are required to register and pay for the course. If you are unable
to attend, please call 517.265.1650. You cannot send another person to take your place.

Basic Rider Course

The Basic Rider Course is comprised of both online portion (completed prior to the first night of

class) and the in-person class days. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Basic eCourse will
provide students with the basic classroom knowledge to begin riding the motorcycle. Designed

for someone who has minimal experience operating a motorcycle, this course focuses on the
development of basic riding skills: clutch and throttle coordination, straight-line riding, braking,

turning, and shifting. Successful completion of this course and its knowledge and skills test,

which consists of approximately 18 hours of classroom and hands-on riding instruction, will result
in a riding test waiver by the Secretary of State. Prerequisite: ability to ride a bicycle. Require-

ment: must have a valid email address on file with Adult Learning Services. Must complete the

online eCourse prior to your class start date and bring the completion certificate, along with your

riding gear, to the first class session. Link to the eCourse will be distributed by Adult Learning

Services via email. NOTE: All Basic Rider Courses meet Fridays from 5:00-10:00 pm and

Saturdays & Sundays from 7:30 am-6:00 pm

Returning Rider Basic Rider Course

A one day course designed for the experienced rider to become licensed and legal. Many experi-

enced, licensed riders use this course as a skills refresher. Topics include: braking, counter

steering, turning, speed judgement, and other techniques necessary for the experienced rider to
operate a motorcycle skillfully and safely. You must be 18 years of age; if you are 16 or 17, you

“Academy for Manufacturing Careers.” The expanded offerings include Skilled Trades Appren-
ticeships, certificates, and customized training.
The Academy for Manufacturing Careers (AMC) is a nationally recognized training institution
providing high quality technical instruction for in-demand manufacturing occupations. AMC is
certified as a Registered Apprenticeship Program by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of
Apprenticeship (USDOL-OA) and is approved as a licensed Proprietary School by the State of
Michigan.

Make a Shave Horse

The shave horse is a very fast, foot-operated vise that is utilized by a broad range of craftsman

including wood turners, bodgers, coopers, chair makers, shingle makers and many other tradi-

tional trades. The shave horse is essential when using a drawknife or spoke shave to shape

wood into finished parts for projects like chairs, paddles, snowshoes, splint basket parts, and

walking sticks. Using provided lumber, you will build your own shave horse.

Exploring Clay; Beginning and Intermediate

This course is designed for either beginning or returning students who wish to add ability on the

wheel to their arsenal of skills in ceramics. Beginners will be introduced to the techniques that will

Down and Dirty: Quick, Easy Glaze Experimentation

In this two-day, hands-on workshop, students will learn a quick and easy method of developing

one’s own decorative ceramic glazes. You will learn the “volumetric” approach to glaze formula-

tion and how to convert our volumetric recipes into standard glaze format. Students will discuss

and evaluate the fired results of our experiments, and learn together. Class is geared toward

intermediate to advanced ceramics students. Bring a set of standard kitchen measuring spoons,

and paper and pencil for taking notes. All other materials provided.

Sculpt-A-Pet!

Drinking Vessels: Cups and Goblets

Students will explore making cups that are safe and a fully functional personal expressions to be

Raku: Japanese Fast Firing

Experience the ancient technique that originated with the Samurai and the tea ceremony. You will

be supplied with three pots to glaze. Using an outdoor kiln, participate in firing them to over 1800

degrees and in less than an hour you will handle the fired, finished product. Raku glazes vary

from crackle, to iridescent, to copper penny shiny. There are few techniques this fun! All materials

and firing provided for any level of experience.

Coffee and Canvas

Come and create different works of art every Saturday in a supportive, fun and friendly environ-

ment. Learn various techniques working with acrylic, pastels, on canvas and paper. Experiment

with stencils, texture, and photo transparencies. Make exciting paintings that will ignite your crea-

Beginning Bead Making / Open Studio

Basic bead making using a torch and glass rod will be the focus of class including larger plain

beads and creating various bead shapes. Basic design techniques for decorating beads including

frit, dots, and stringer will be explored. Torch and studio safety will be reviewed. The class will be

taught as an open studio that explores topics and techniques based upon the students' interests
